When all is said and done for VVD I believe he will be considered our greatest ever defender and top 3 CBS of all time in PL.

A 75m bargain that will have given us at least 10 seasons of football. Hopefully over the next few seasons he can help Leoni learn the ropes and follow in his footsteps.

I think Rio starts on the weekend.

XI for Everton: Alisson - Frimpong - Konate - VVD - Kerkez - Grav - Mac - Szob - Rio - Ekitike - Salah

XI for Southampton: Mamardashvili - Bradley - Leoni - Gomez - Robbo - Endo - Jones/Nyoni - Wirtz - Gakpo - Isak - Chiesa

No way a 17 year old starts a derby against Everton. Not a chance.

Like there was no way a 16 year old scores a late winner at St James Park in the Prem?

If he's good enough, he's old enough. And he's good enough.

Everton's physicality and penchanct for dirty tackles is something to worry about for him though

Isak looked cool. Did some nice things, definitely settled as the game went on. Do you give him the first hour against Everton, or the last 30-35? Depending of course how he pulls up, Slot would be measured about his minutes based on his commentary around him pre-game.

Have only watched the mini match which can give a distorted view of a game but anyway...

Looks like Mo has regained form, a fantastic goal but should've buried that chance in the 2nd half. Wirtz looked heavily involved but just didn't get the bounce of the ball at crucial moments. Isak looked good as well. VVD the hero yet again. He's like a bottle of Grange that man.

On the downside, as someone mentioned earlier coughing up yet another 2-0 lead is infuriating no matter what the circumstances. Regardless of whether their 1st goal was technically offside it was poor coverage from the midfield. No one tracked the Atletico runner from deep.

How did Mac look when he came on? Physically ok or still a bit proppy? Ideally I'd want him to start in the derby.

Has there been a defender who's better at scoring at corners than Virgil?
Listening to the odds on TalkSport here in UK, they always bring him up as a “surprise” 10-1 next goal scorer, esp when playing teams like Burnley on the weekend and expecting 50 million corners.

If the offside player is between the keeper and the ball they usually are deemed to be interfering with play when a player shoots.

It was cleared super quick by VAR.
With this one, the offside player was blocking Alisson’s view not of the shot but of the ball on its path. I just don’t understand how that isn’t called offside.

On a free kick, you wouldn’t be allowed to stand 10 yards off side, one yard in front of the keeper but just to the side so they can see the shot, but end being blocking their view as the ball comes in. That’s what happened here.

That's from coming on late in the game which is his role this season. A complete different kettle of fish to starting in a derby. Kid needs easing in - not throwing in at the deep end!

Starting a derby is not appropriate for a 17 year old who is only finding his feet.

It'll likely Gakpo or Wirtz at left wing to start or if Slot is feeling adventurous start Hugo at LW and Isak up front.

Rio won't start any games this season apart from cup games or if we had a massive injury crisis with attacking players.

I can't really fault the team on the 2nd goal. Their guy slipped over, another one of theirs booted the ball into our defender. It deflected off our defender up for Llorenti whos volley also took a massive deflection off Mac to defeat Allison.

I'm sure the XG from that passage of play must have been below 0.10. Sometimes, shit happens and there's little that can be done to stop it.

All you can do is keep going and score another.

Should never have even been close but that is what happens when you don't take your chances.

The VAR should be fired for not ruling out AM's first goal. Clear as day obstructing Ali.

Simeone is a horrible campaigner.

We've got to get better at seeing out games. We will come unstuck if we don't improve.

That Simeone verbal scrap with the fan and the shit munch grin on the fans face was a delight at 6.50am. Every game overtaking the last for moment of the season lool

Signs of great link up play between Wirtz and Isak, bodes very well

Florian just needs to be less unselfish, he's looking to give it off all the time when he can just have a pop, great attitude but he is allowed to act like he's the star man, because he is

Also need to slow games down to control possession more when we're 2-0 up, it's okay to take a breather particularly with a trillion games coming up this season. We let teams have periods on the ball way too much

What I find perplexing is that when teams get level they then put 10 behind the ball and try and hold on. Much better to try and win the ball and hold possession, if you have the ball, the other team doesn't. AM paid by letting us have all the ball and force a number of corners.

He’s the top 1 PL centre back of all time and it’s not even close.

It’s at the point where it’s actually insulting to him when people try and debate it. No one is even in the same stratosphere.
