AFL Player 7: Indefatigable Zach Merrett - Stepping down as captain for 2026

Pick 9, a future pick that is likely to be in the late teens, a player languishing in the VFL with 10 games of AFL experience, and a pick that will be around the 30s.

If that's the absolute best they can do then Zach would be feeling pretty aggreived right now. Clearly they don't value him at all.
It's a good offer, Zach is a superatr no doubt but he is 30, wants out and should no longer be looked as part of our future.

We wont get better than this next year

I think a club that was actually 'not ashamed of their desire to get better' probably should be offering this last week rather than now.

Hustwaite contracted as well, he has kibosh rights

Then he won't go next year. He will still be contracted.

Above all else, I don't want us to hand the missing piece to the Hawks' midfield over to them for a measley deal.

Is it measley though?

What helps US more in the future? Zach or two firsts and a second round pick? I honestly couldn't give a **** if Hawks win a flag next year, we wont be and I want us to build a side that can.

Also had a number of concussions in a short space of time a few years back.

Would be utter madness not to make a trade with the foundation of what has been offered.

Might as well shut the place down we're not good enough to turn that into 4 x 200 game players.

Colour me shocked by the magnitude of the opening offer. That said, it has the feel of a take it or leave it. Hawks have lost their minds if there is a mid point they will pay based on this starting position.

Have there been many bigger offers in AFL history? Maybe the Judd trade

Port traded 2 first round picks, 1 second round pick and about 5 3rd round selections for Hornet and Willie Rioli and scraps.

If the Sydney offer for Curnow is a genuine one it's not even the biggest offer of the day

Swap VFL plodder Husthwaite out for a usable player, and you might make that trade.

My thoughts exactly. I was so used to McKenzie being included in the hypothetical, that I forgot the club said he wouldn't be dealt, and read the player name as his. Which made my instant reaction "take the deal". Then I reread who the player was and changed my mind immediately.

Husthwaite could be our [PLAYERCARD]Josh Dunkley[/PLAYERCARD].

He's massive, a contested pig but has a defensive streak that can be coached to the fore - much of this has already been done. He's also got a serious engine and is probably Caldwell level by foot.

I would be all over him as part of this trade. He should slot straight into a starting spot in a 22.

I think he has more transferrable attributes than McKenzie when it comes to putting together a balanced squad. McKenzie is one of those guys like Cerra, basically the same player, really. He has quality but he's the sort of player that tends to create an imbalance. He's not an inside bull but he also doesn't have the speed to take opponents apart on the outside. He's a bit possession accumulatorish.
