Don't think he's a pressing need for us, but considering we get him for basically free and won't have to pay his full salary, I think he's a good pick up. At worst he's a good quality back-up to our midfield and good mentor off the field for the younger group who are going to be coming through, and at best he significantly improves our midfield in comparison to Oliver's output for the last two years.

Id be pretty confident Steele is on way way less than Petracca and Oliver.

He last signed a contract in 2021 when wages were much lower and also Saints are paying some of his wage .

His impact on the Melbourne SC would be very marginal.

Oliver is cooked.. Hes also a cultural cancer with the IQ of a potato.

Steele is an upgrade.
One difference is the only way is probably maintain or down for Steele from an onfield perspective at almost 30 years of age.

At 28 there would still be some hope Oliver could return to something approaching his peak.

But we’ve hoped Oliver could get back to his peak for three years now so I think it’s the right call to move on from the drama and distraction.

If Oliver did get back to something near what he was that would be more damning on Oliver and his character. Melbourne bent over backwards for the guy, turned a mostly blind eye to his indiscretions, and he couldn’t get it together with all that support. I doubt he was ever going to turn it around at Melbourne unfortunately.

i didn't want him but i guess i've come around to it now that it's done. he'll no doubt set a good example for the younger mids compared to a dunce like Oliver.
it's crazy to think we traded out two of our top paid players and we didn't even lose any leadership. we actually gained some instead with Steele and Mihocek coming in.

Yeah, I didn't like it at first but have basically come around to accepting it for what it is.

You gonna change your name or club supported?

Jesus this thread. This isn't some spud like Billings and Dunstan, you're talking about a 2xAA, best and fairest, club captain. Yes he has lost a step but he is by no means a VFL level player only. His stats this year weren't far off Viney and that's with a knee injury early in the year and Ross cutting his minutes in the back half of the year. I would expect similar output to what we got from Macrae this year.

Add to that he is an outstanding character off the field. And you paid **** all for him. And we're paying part of his wage. This is all upside for you guys. Anyway I've said my piece but I hope your fanbase shows him a bit more respect and gets around him next year.

Eh, we'll talk about our players as we see fit. Thanks, though.

FWIW, I'm more OK with the move than I was initially given it was effectively an Oliver for Steele swap. My main hope though is that we don't just spam the Viney x Steele combo at all CBAs – with an extra on the bench, hoping we can just rotate them so that Rivers and Langford get adequate time on-ball.

Will be good to finally have a midfielder who can teach others to defend, though.

We won't know until next year but given the sort of things King has said about how he wants us to play I think most people will end up being fine with Steele. Yes, the game has changed but every team still needs a couple of mature bodies who can just win the ball.

Anyway the obvious thing for us this off-season has been the cultural shift. The young players will be coming into the club and seeing a bunch of senior professionals on the training track instead of dickheads who want to go their own way.
