Playing for Gold Coast. :( :( Didn't she see how they're playing this season?

Staying close to friends and family more important, it would seem. Understandable.

Suns (as usual) have a plethora of top-end Academy players in this year’s AFLW draft. So things could well change for them.

If not, we could always try to lure her down again in a few years!

Chickened out?

It's a 17 year old having to consider whether to move interstate away from friends and family to an expensive city to play in a semi-professional league. Sure it's disappointing to miss out, but to me it looks like a pretty sensible decision all things considered.
Her comments earlier in the year were all about being a Carlton fan, loving the club and what they've done for her dad, her and her family. Now it's all 'stick with what's worked so far', which involves a club that is in the throes of a terrible season despite a huge wealth of talent.

Someone didn't pass the vibe check, just hope it wasn't us, at least for a good reason. Gifting the Northern academies so readily in what is supposed to be an increasingly professional league is deeply disappointing.
Dean is above Taylor. And at least on the same level as Sharp, Lindsay, Robey and Grlj
Xavier Taylor? No, no he is not. He is also not above Sharp or Robey. Lindsay you can make an argument for, but not in terms of footskills. Grilj I can vaguely agree with, but his ceiling is surprisingly high which is why clubs are thinking of reaching.

Reckon you and Twomey might be misreading the tea leaves: Eagles have pick 13 too.

Melbourne are the clear high end risk at what will be pick 11 when it comes in, then he probably doesn't make it past the Dogs at what will be pick 17.
Given his track record I'm surprised that anyone would dismiss his comments. He was fairly clear, he believes a bid at pick 2 is unlikely, but still likely to fall in the first 5-6 picks (which could be pushed back if there are Uwland/Patterson/Annable bids). It seems like the clubs hold Harry Dean in high regard. Other journalists with industry connections have held a similar line. For instance, Marc McGowan said some recruiters have Dean ahead of Duff-Tytler. Obviously we'll all be hoping that you and Twomey are both wrong and a bid comes in at pick 50, but that's pure fantasy. Personally, I think any bid that comes after pick 5 will be a bargain. I think he's a gem and that he has the potential to earn multiple AA selections.

Wonder if the promise of being a potential Pick 1 could have swayed things? Suns are already putting out social content around the nomination like she’s already joined them, which seems a bit odd if other clubs are still able to bid on her…

I'm taking his comments in context given his history with sizing up certain types of players with a month of deliberations to play out. He often gets it wrong with academy kids, where clubs do size up the impact a professional club apparatus has had on the player's output.

He also tends to get it wrong with some talls, and bigger mids, particularly when they're slower players.

.
Last week she was quoted as saying she's a fan of the Carlton men's side 'but doesn't follow a team in the aflw'.

That was a clear indication to me she wasn't coming to us (or st kilda).

Dean was comfortably more impactful through the year than Taylor and Grlj. Not even close really.

I don't think Grlj gets past the Tigers and I doubt Taylor gets past Ess. Dean I believe will be bid on by Melbourne, mostly to keep us honest, but they likely do it with their second pick.

Maybe Tigers will be keen to trade 4 + 38 + F2 for 9 + 11 + 27F1(Swans) since Grlj will probably still be there at our pick 9 anyway...

This keeping teams honest bullcrap needs to be stopped. It’s time wasting. I remember SOS doing it several times when he was with us and it was a joke and seemed like a joke to him.

We are a professional sport aren’t we? One day a team should just let someone take the player and teach them a lesson. And then get them to ask for a trade in a years time.

You'd think we'd have a cut-off point for each of our players planned out.

e.g. WC bid on Dean at pick 2. Soz Pete & Harry, have a couple of years in Perth, and we'll see you in 2028. Bid comes in at 5 instead, and we have a trade lined up to get the match done. Somewhere in between is the cutoff.

Same deal for Ison. Maybe anything earlier than 15 or so, and sorry, no can do.

Only for the pure fact that Matty Lappin was one of our family favourites - right from his mark of the year in his first game and through to his goal in the last quarter of the 1999 Preliminary Final and all the highlights he provided to our darker years in the 2000’s - I hope his daughter Sunny chooses us. 👍

Dead to me. 🤣

There's 7 players that I would say yes to before Dean, and 3 more that I'd have to think about. I hope the club are thinking clearly.

I'm sorry but if Dean is bid on too high compared to where we rate him then we should not match and just use our picks on other players.
Sentiment and tradition should not replace proper list management.
This club can not afford to overpay.
IF we are serious about Carlton First, if Dean is bid higher than we rate him, we pass

What if I said that harry dean
is the best player in this years draft
If we get him for any thing but pick 1 we are winning the deal

They are not, they are going to let it ride and draft a small forward with the leftovers. Strictly 'stock' thinking by the Blues, I'm afraid. We don't believe in anything resembling an 'edge' at Carlton, we prefer to smooth them out.

If the club thinks Harry is the best player in the draft, then they should match a bid anywhere.

But if the club thinks Harry is the 10th best player in the draft and he gets bid on at #2, then the club should pass.

There's more to it though.

If the club thinks there is a huge drop between our 10th (Dean) and 11th choices, and has good trade offers for our picks 9 + 11 (that would be 13 + 15 if we pass on matching the bid), we might be much better off 'overpaying' for Dean.

Exactly what I was thinking. Who is going to move away from home play in exactly the same semi-professional league. Pull of the jumper ain’t that strong.

Surely if the AFL had told all the clubs about it a week ago it would have leaked by now.

Exactly. Cal Twomey would have broken the news if something had been finalised given they were desperate for content on trade radio.

I've got no doubt the AFL have spoken to clubs and given them a little wink, nudge on what to expect next year - which I suspect will be minimal to what they currently have in place for 2025.

I think the fact we will probably end up getting Dean for very little additional benefit, is evidence the new DVI is doing its job.

If this were last year we'd have traded out for F1s and matched Dean bid with a bunch of junk picks.

There will probably be carry on about the goldcoast getting 2 top 5 picks after finishing high, ignoring that they had to trade heavily into this draft last year to get there.

Are those 7 still taking into account our list needs? I would have a young developing key defender as a top need.
Need for a dynamic mid and star small forward are greater, and in that sense there's 4 or 5 dynamic mids in that list of 10 names (albeit 2 are academy linked). I would also rate our need for a key forward greater than key defender, especially given the DFA market, and there's arguably one (Mitch Marsh, but could also be seen as a tall mid or key defender).

Our list is in a state where we could happily take anyone, but we'd need to trade someone out next year in the case of Sharp, Annable, and CDT.
