Just when you thought the useless and invisible reign of Richard Goyder couldn't get any more self serving, he's railroaded the selection process and inserted his own numptie (who is as corporate and unknown as himself publically) into the role of AFL chairman. Right at a time when the AFL is crying out for someone with a bit of profile, charisma and initiative to balance out Dillon being the world’s most boring man.

This puppet should hopefully get rolled by the clubs at the March AGM, let's hope they have the fortitude to follow through this time.

Long may he reign.

Ummm... Is there a popularity contest that I've missed somewhere?

I’m not surprised by the decision. As soon as Caro went quiet on this issue, you could back it in that Goyder was going to get his man across the line.

The Gordon option was never going to fly, as there was enough Presidents who he’d put off side, because he was outspoken and honest.

If you’re a Geelong supporter you’d be over the moon. Another Geelong person inside the AFL who has considerable power - Craig Hutchinson, Tom Harley & Simon Kelleher.

This is ridiculous

May as well have gotten Fat Cat or Humphrey B Bear to do the job, they'd fare just as well.
Yeah!! This is how ridiculous it is. Here are some of his past positions:

  • Member of the Federal Government's Financial Regulator Assessment Authority
  • Chairman of Ian Potter Foundation
  • Director of the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health
  • Chairman of Transurban Co Ltd
  • Non-Executive Director of Ramsay Health Care
  • Chief Executive Officer of Medibank Private Ltd - led Medibank's transformation from a private health insurer to healthcare company
  • Group Executive Finance and Strategy of National Australia Bank (NAB)
  • Chief Executive Officer and Country Head of Bank of America Merrill Lynch (Australia)
  • Chief Executive Officer and Executive Chairman of Goldman Sachs JBWere.
  • President of Geelong Football Club (in a premiership year)

What does an AFL chairman do?
What makes a good one versus a bad one?
What makes this guy the best person for the job?
He wasn't appointed by the AFL. It was the Clubs

Doesn't pass the sniff test

Not exactly true. 6 club presidents and others from the AFL including Goyder made the selection. It still needs to go to a vote of all 18/19 clubs.

Those 6 club presidents are pissed off coz Goyder took the selection outta their hands last minute. We will see a challenge in March from the AFL clubs I think, they are reportedly filthy with the charade of a process.

It's why Jeff Browne stepped away, he was the favourite with the clubs but wouldn't sit around waiting for Goyder to hand over, where as Drummond would, that's how he became the top pick, simply coz he was willing to appease Goyder's self interest.

My bad, the appointment is still to be ratified by the Clubs, but when the alternative scare Brown and Gordon Drummond is looking good. But if the clubs decided against Drummond so be it

Ill be honest, thats pretty good resume

Ill be honest, thats pretty good resume

It’s a résumé on par with, if not weaker than, Goyder’s, and he’s been an appalling chairman. What the organisation really needs is someone with genuine breadth of experience: someone who’s lived in different cities across Australia, has strong media influence and contacts, and brings real insight from the sports and entertainment industries. It also needs to be someone with a more outspoken profile to balance out Dillon. Not another corporate suit trapped in the Melbourne bubble with little experience beyond the boardroom.
