It’s the absolute peak of big dumb excess action movie. If you grew up like me in the golden age of them, this is most (not best) of the genre

One could suggest there's too much of a good thing if that's how you feel (I don't agree but see your opinion).

Similar to LAH I think it falls apart halfway in when it starts to become generic one man army action flick and loses the interest of seeing Schwarzenegger working with his team having to lead a double life and his wife growing restless of her housewife life married to a computer salesman.

That’s fair. I reckon from Jamie’s dance it becomes pretty tropey but it’s also just so over the top and outrageous that I can’t help but enjoy it.

Again, I reckon it’s the MOST of those action movies, it’s borderline the scary movie parody of them

Tell yous what though, 90s movies had the best soundtracks. Last Action Hero, Mario Bros come to mind as great albums.

It's clearly self aware, with Jamie Lee Curtis's line 'I married Rambo', but... I dunno. I like my action movies more earnest. They just ****ing knuckle down and commit to some crazy (or not so crazy) concepts without having a wink at the audience. If I want to watch a parody film I will watch a parody film, then I will hope that film isn't Last Action Hero because it tried to stop being a parody film halfway through.

Is it a bad? Absolutely not. It just doesn't thrill me as much as it does for others, despite the absolute talent involved. No expense was spared in its production.

Too Secret is more spy films. Naked Gun is more police detective (and I wouldn't consider it parody as much as it is just awesome comedy). Hot Shots movies are decent but also, quite sanitised and family friendly borderline slapstick.

Is there a differece between parody and satire?

Hot Fuzz satirises police buddy action flicks perfectly, it's probably the gold standard. The Other Guys and Macgruber probably fit the bill. Hot Shots: Part Deux also probably among the GOAT but is slapstick.

Classic Star Trek Season 3 was so bad and awful the series fully deserved to be cancelled and it probably was a good thing for the long term longevity of the franchise.

I haven't seen it yet, but Shoot Em Up is on my watch list for this very reason.

I love The Other Guys



Seen this movie almost 100 times and it never gets boring or old.

Arguably Will Ferrell's last great/iconic movie.

Definitely not a movie for the kids though, Allan and his wife having a fight over her wanting to take an oral sex education course but he says they can't afford it always makes me giggle.

I think Last Action Hero starts to fall apart about half way through and fully crashes by the final third. I think the first half is very good. I've never met anyone who really loves it though so I don't think that's a hot take?

I've also read about the original Last Action Hero before Hollywood and Schwarzenegger got in to it and it sounded way better. Solely focused on satirizing the action genre, very violent, not sanitised for kids with a hundred references to other genres of film.

I looked at it as a fun movie that came out at a time where kids wanted to watch his movies but they were out of reach

Its actually both. There was some Impressive action set piece scenes in it

Tbh I've only ever watched part one fully.

It's excellent and I've never felt the need to see more, it didn't strike me as a film that needs three sequels. I have seen bits and pieces of them all but never completely.

I read about what happens in 2 and I think that's just a silly retcon for the character.

Jason Stratham is so overlooked. He's s unique actor who offers up the perfect blend of humour and seriousness. He's quite refreshing from the typical action stars

I'm divided as to whether I'm appreciating his work more than it's worth with similarities to Nirvana and Jeff Buckley. Or am I overthinking this.

it was already like that when he was alive, he was much more proven and accomplished than your examples, had a larger body of work and been acclaimed for longer. death didn’t really inflate his reputation at all, it just sucked, and robbed us of more excellent performances
