you can field a full team of players that have left us, and here it is:

B: K. Cox (Richmond), B. Brown (Essendon)
HB: B. Lynch (Richmond), V. Saad (GWS), J. Grierson (Sydney)
C: K. Ashmore (Hawthorn), A. Drennan (WCE), L. Pullar (Sydney)
HF: D. Bannister (Essendon), A. Gilroy (Hawthorn), J. Stanton (GCS)
F: G. Campbell (Collingwood), L. Hamilton (Sydney)

R: Liz McGrath (WCE), E. Gavalas (WB), G. Nanscawen (Essendon)

I would say Brisbane have lost far more quality off the top of my head the players we have lost are; Tayla Harris, Emily bates, Greta bodey, Jesse Warsaw, Tahlia Randall, lulu pulllar, Kaitlyn Ashmore, Indy tahau, Nat exon, Kate McCarthy , Lauren Bella, Sabrina probably half an aa team there

If we just had Tahlia , bates , Indy and Warflaw we would be challenging and likely beating north

And if Adelaide, Melbourne, the Bulldogs etc. still had all the players they lost they probably would too. Who cares? This is how expansion works, more opportunity means players at existing clubs have options to move if they want to. Like Tahlia Randall who might not have had the chance to develop into one of the best key forwards in the game if she'd stayed at Brisbane.

Which players are your say top 5 and love to watch.

Top skills footy done well and are a joy to watch my top 5 are:

Kate Hore dees
Abby McKay blues
Ruby Slasher pies
Harrington blues
not sure after that

but which players that are easy to like and are a joy to watch love the skills of kate and abby

Wow sportsbet are actually taking money for a North win.... I thought they would be unbackable

Why should North get punished for being good?

weird, everyone lift their game

Posters in this thread claiming to be concerned about competitive balance strangely have nothing to say about Richmond cutting a 25-year-old who has finished 5th, 5th and 6th in their last 3 B&Fs (and was third for disposals this year).

Wouldn't want to put any blame on the idiots at clubs running crap football programs.

Yes, because one example of one player who was delisted from one team for any number of reasons completely undermines the fact that five teams finished with percentages below 63% this year and last year and for a large number of teams the expectation of a competitive game or season undermines their interest in it.

For the sake of argument I looked at how many games the bookmakers thought that the favourite was no shorter than $1.50 ie a 66.5% chance to win (actually more like 63-4 due to bookmaker margin).

I chose this to see, objectively, how often a given game in the season was genuinely considered not to just be competitive, but in the balance as to how to win, thus leading to fan interest.

It was literally just 16 games. 4 of which came in Round 1, where obviously odds are going to trend toward team parity with uncertainty over how good a team is with player changes and last year's form to go by.

16/90 is 18% (or 15% of games after Round 1).

On the other hand, I counted 38 games in AFLW that were expected to be rank uncompetitive, with betting odds of $1.15 or shorter (87% chance of winning). 42% of all games.

In contrast for the men's AFL, I counted 73 of 207 games (35%) where the favourite not shorter than 1.50, and 48 of 207 games (23%) had a team that was 1.15 or shorter.

I don't think people are talking about competitive balance in some sort of fairness sense rather that if the AFL's own path to growth - things that it has outlined for what the future intention of the league is - a lack of competitive balance leads to a lack of fan interest if there's no buy-in for supporters in a hope that their team can win, pull an upset win, or otherwise the uncertainty of who will win a game before it's played allows for fan interest, which leads to crowds and TV viewers and growth of the league. We can discuss the reasons for it in micro detail but clearly the AFL's existing list management rules, when put up to the reality of how different clubs operate, leads to extreme differences that are not healthy for the competition at all.

To be clear, I have no idea what has happened.

But given her on-field performances and the way she left Carlton, I’m going to go out on a limb and say there may be more to it than ‘Richmond is run by idiots’, which may of course also be true.
How did she leave Carlton? I'm not privy to this

Egan had a horrific preseason and Richmonds uptick in form coincided with Egan hitting form.

Virtually the only one who had a crack vs GC.

If the Tigers think they are better without her then they are idiots. So perhaps something going on behind the scenes.

Any number of reasons? Didn't you hear. Phoebe Monahan, Grace Campbell, Courtney Wakefield, Harriet Cordner, Eilish Sheerin and now Grace Egan had to leave Richmond because the AFL forced them.

All were delisted, traded for practically nothing, or chose to retire despite being top players at the club. Just bad luck for the Tigers.

Certainly couldn't reel off similar lists for other clubs like the Gold Coast and Collingwood, who also rapidly fell down the ladder. In every case, it was entirely the AFL's fault. Do not blame the clubs for their mismanagement, whatever you do!

Sounds like an enormous waste of time. Bookmakers set prices based on what punters think, and the punters have nfi like everybody else. Hence the increased number of upsets this year.

I was hoping our football department would be shown the door before they could make any calls on our future. What's to stop them from having a fire sale if they know they're being given the arse?

Bookmakers set their odds based on what they think the result should be. Sometimes they get this right and sometimes they won't. The lines will move based on things like personnel moves, but also primarily due to the smart punters who know how to analyse the games properly and bet accordingly. By game time the point spread for games will be pretty accurate.

Up until this year games have been far more predictable than the AFL. Upsets were due primarily to kicking for goal woes and weather. Things changed massively this year. The compentition is far more even and the influx of quality rookies is very impactful. Weak teams have improved and powerhouses like Ade have taken a step back. This trend will very likely continue in the future. The exception is obviously NM who smash everyone.

What a completely bizarre take. I genuinely can’t figure out how you think any of this is even related.

Are you saying there should be rules preventing bad clubs from cutting good players? Are you saying that happening is a structural reason the comp is unbalanced? Are you saying people who think the competition is badly unbalanced also have to think that all clubs run great football programs?

Guessing there’s more to the Egan situation than meets the eye.

She left Carlton on poor terms so it wouldn’t surprise if her immaturity got the better of her again.
Yeah, obviously something is going on somewhere.

The boys’ programs are so well developed that I think they are all over behavioural and attitude issues from a very early age.

In a lot of ways the girls do not have the same support and are left to figure things out for themselves a lot more, which can sometimes take a few years. Tayla Harris says hello.

Sean Lawson's figures (unsourced) showing a bounce back from last year's disastrous compressed fixture.

As we already know, Sydney is absolutely killing it. Carlton showing the impact of a club giving their supporters some hope.

But what is the story with the Eagles?

The Eagles hosted the Derby last year but not this year, with a 6k crowd at Leederville, it makes a significant difference in SA and WA if a club gets a big derby crowd. For whatever reason, possibly rain(?), Freo didn't get the bump this year.

And the Crows having the derby in SA masks a drop off (think they also had a couple rain affected games and a clash with a men's final?), while Port were steady and up slightly for non derby games.

D'oh, yeah, it does kinda explain that in the footer, and for some of the Carlton bump too. Context is everything!
