Annoying as spangher finally got the forward line working well.

We cannot go into next season with a newbie forwards coach.

Very poor form to leave three months after the assistant coaches need to know if they’re getting another contract. Hawks really do like pissing off every other club.
We did sign Bevo after he’d already accepted a role at Stk….so there’s that

I mentioned earlier that I'd expect Ben Reid to be upgraded from development coach to forwards coach.

It's not ideal but at least he's familiar with the team and would have already been working with them closely. It's much easier to find a development coach this late.

Spangher will give the Hawks so much information about us too
I don't think they need it, they comprehensively dismantle our entire system every time we come up against them.

Faaaark. Big loss, knew Spang was seen as someone with the capacity to do a similar role to Egan within the club.

Can’t begrudge a guy for moving up in his field.

Not sure how on earth we fill that role with an equally capable coach now though. Ben Reid isn’t ready to step in that quickly surely.
He would have more experience than Spang, when he started.

The article stated we already have targets lined up, hopefully we can get experience in.

Can’t help but feel there’s more to this. It’s no secret he was the whipping boy of our coaches, and fans always wanted someone better. Maybe he was given a tap on the shoulder?
Dude he is quite literally taking a promotion at a competitor club. Hardly "whipping boy" stuff.

Tap on the shoulder at the Dogs, head of strategy at the Hawks? Yeah I strongly doubt it played out like that.

"Sorry Spang but you're not too popular on BigFooty mate. We're gonna have to let you go. I know the boys love you and you coached the highest scoring forward line in the comp last year, but every time we lose there are some really nasty posts made about you on the forums. This just isn't gonna work. We'll have a chat to the Hawks and see if they can find you a role. Probably a promotion. Sorry again."

Be great to get Simmo, Horse or Hinkley to bring in some real experience. Won't happen though.

Was thinking the same thing re: Ben Reid but might not have many other options.

Jokes on Hawks. Spanghers played his whole career as a backman. What does he know about football strategies and projects.

Ahh that is shit timing, agree this stuff should happen in the Sept - early Oct period, but AFL is always messy this time of the year.

[PLAYERCARD]Ben Reid[/PLAYERCARD] has had a year at the club in a coaching capacity now and was a successful footballer at both ends, wouldn't be the worst option if we have to promote from within, interested to see who we bring in if not.

Come and be the forward coach in a forward line containing Sam Darcy, [PLAYERCARD]Aaron Naughton[/PLAYERCARD], [PLAYERCARD]Rhylee West[/PLAYERCARD], [PLAYERCARD]Cody Weightman[/PLAYERCARD] and then some promising youngsters like Croft, Dolan, Hynes, Davidson, Jones and maybe Dovaston, that's a pretty enticing job offer. For a team that has underperformed but is chock full of talent, it really is a nice spot for a coach to step in to.

Official statement by the club

The Western Bulldogs can confirm that AFL Assistant Coach Matt Spangher will depart the Club to join Hawthorn this week.

The 38-year-old joined the Club in 2021, mentoring some of the most exciting forwards in the competition during his time at the helm.

Spangher claimed the Phil Walsh Memorial Scholarship this season as part of the AFLCA.

Bulldogs General Manager of Coaching & Performance Matt Egan praised the impact of Spangher’s time at the Club.

“Matt built a great connection with our staff and players during his time at the Bulldogs, in particular with our forwards group,” Egan said.

“He has a real passion for relationships and developing people, something our players really benefited from, and they will take his lessons into the future.

“While it is always disappointing to lose good people, this was an exciting opportunity for Matt in an elevated and strategic role at Hawthorn.”

“We wish him all the best for his next chapter and thank him for his contribution to our football program over four years.”

The Club will commence a process to fill the vacant role in coming days.
