So when you said “Fair enough” ( in post #3090 ), to my post where I claimed you were being unfair deriding him. You were conceding, and acknowledging that your derision was unfair.
Not sure how it can be interpreted any other way.

I actually thought your honesty was admirable.

The bolded might be about you. I was simply acknowledging that my post was irritating.

I don't think a poster is being unfair or derisive about a player when they are giving reasons why they think a player won't become an AFL regular.

Just as I don't think you are being unfair or derisive about the list manager when you give reasons why you think a player who was cut should have been retained. Or of the selectors by talking about them not being giving blocks of games. It's just an opinion.

But I do think we both have the habit of being irritating by voicing those opinions too often.

By deriding, do you mean being honest about one’s prospects of making it at Collingwood?

See, the way you use honest here cleverly throws everyone off the scent. But the truth is, all our opinions are bets --- we're all making calculated guesses. So deriding someone is being too confident a player is poor based on what we know. We see this again and again: Heath Scotland, Josh Daicos, Billy Frampton, Markov, the list is endless of players people here called "spuds" and were proved wrong, and the reverse is true. "Lee Walker will be a champion." Wasn't a bad calculated guess. So deriding is the right word sometimes.

Clever response to further throw everyone off the scent but an opinion being a bet doesn’t make it any less honest.

"sometimes" is also a clever use of words as are your examples that clearly are derisive but they're not the examples being discussed. Calling some a spud is definitely derisive. Saying you don't think someone has the game to be a senior AFL regular, isn't derisive.

I agree. I just get tired of posters writing off players with total certainty when there isn't enough evidence, when we don't really know what's happening in the background, when players mature at different paces -- i mean Frampton only became a regular in his late 20s. It's just the black and white statements that get me.

Its an opinions board. You're just going to have to deal with it. Just as those who don't rate the next Finn McRae or Danny Stanley are going to have to deal with "deserves", "block of games", "too good for VFL", "unfair" and all the calls to drop other players and criticism of coaches for not picking him that goes with the territory. The reality is people see players differently and some will anoint players that others don't rate.

Lee Walker would have become a champion!
'Deriding' is a bit strong. You said it yourself that 'we're all making calculated guesses'. That's something that's not a challenging task with Fin Macrae. I, for one, predict he won't be another Heath Scotland. That's a calculated guess.

I wish Fin the best.
I hope he can carve out a spot for himself at WC.
He often seemed to get injured at times when he might have gotten some games, and preseasons disrupted.
Back trouble being one.

Walker had unreal football ability. But if he also had dur ability, he would have been a WCE champion and never gotten to us.

Fair enough. I was more trying to have a go at the concept of a role player just being a second rate payer implied within that post. There's 18 roles in a game plan, long term "role players" are blokes who are really good at one aspect of the game. Hopefully Beau McCreery's game becomes more well rounded, but at the moment he's one hell of a role player.
I know this is an old post, but I’d consider WHE and to a lesser degree Tarkyn Lockyer to have been role players. Albeit their role was their versatility (ie. not owning a defined role, but being plug and play almost anywhere)

I hope he can make it work. His long VFL stint marked him as a player that would not improve our seniors. May he find a path to improve WC.

You make a very good point …

Nobody faulted his VFL performances - he’ll fit right in at WCE.

Sadly he will probably still play in the reserves over there.

Sullivan was considered a delist in 2024, he got an extended run and proved himself. Macrae could well have proved himself with a similar extended run.

Shoulder injury was a huge blow to his 2025 season.

Our midfield depth starved him of opportunity. Who are the 4 or 5 WC mids that will offer the same depth challenge for Finn to overcome?
I hope for your sake he gets a game.

Cannot believe you're still trotting this out
