#6 depends on whether Lyon plays.

Who decides the type of match, day or day/nite, ICC or home board?
Lyon will play. There was just a pink ball shield game where the spinners on both sides played a significant role.

I don't think Weatherald has to do much to get the whole Ashes. And he looked good in that second innings.
Don't get me wrong, I want him to play the whole series at a minimum but this is pushing it IMO. He had a few close calls early and Head (plus the low target) made him look better than he was. If we're chasing 300-odd and Head doesn't play his dominant innings, I doubt anyone would be happy with Weatherald's 23 in the second innings. The pitch was pretty docile by our second innings and England's bowling was garbage.

I hope he has a good second Test though, as he did have the right temperament. I just think people are probably showing too much confidence in someone that's averaging 11.5 after his first Test.

Seems silly. Surely you want our openers to score runs. Renshaw is hardly Mr Sure Thing anyway and I like him.

What’s the big deal he’ll be in after Sydney anyway
Probably not. There's a few choices. Now is the time to pick Renshaw if they ARE going to pick him.

Usman's fitness is doubtful, Renshaw has made runs lately and his most recent 100 was actually a day/night game at the Gabba. It's a more compelling case than anyone else at the moment.

Leave the young fellas to show a bit in the shield if they can with a view to winter and next summer. If Renshaw makes runs when, or even if he gets selected for the next tests then well and good, carry on.

After Sydney there's a couple of winter tests here against Bangladesh and possibly 1 against Afghanistan, then 3 tests in SAF. The 3 winter tests against moderate opposition are good times for young players to get in the side and see how they go both skill wise and culture wise. 2 openers needed. Let's see what happens for the rest of this series.

I thought he looked good, but yes he'll need to get more runs.

It's tricky with Lyon, because he hasn't really done anything wrong, it's just a bit of a concern seeing him bowl 2 overs for the match after a Summer where he bowled confortably less overs than our pace bowlers.

It's hard to not to begin to question the purpose of having a specialist spinner in the team that's not really bowling enough to give our pace bowlers proper rests.

All of that being said, his spot should probably remain safe until Cummins is back and we have confidence in his fitness, at the very least. We'd be putting a lot of faith in Doggett, and to a lesser extent Boland, to drop Lyon before then.

Brisbane.
The Queensland spinners took 2 wickets of 20.

The Vic spinners took 4 wickets in a massive first innings total and didn't even get a bowl in the second dig.

I wouldn't call that a significant contribution.

It's risky leaving Lyon out though. But I wouldn't point to that shield game as a reason for him to play.

Really? Two 300+ first innings scores where the front line spinners bowled 21 and 35 overs and took wickets. Lyon will play if the pitch looks remotely similar.

I’d play Renshaw especially at the Gabba, also he makes up 11 in the field because Uzzie can only stand at first slip and catch them if they go straight to him, apart from that he can’t move.

Yep really.

They bowled a million overs and didn't exactly set the world on fire.
That's a spinner's role in Aust. If the batsmen are going well, bowl 20 to 30 overs, keep it tight and chip out a couple of wickets.

I'm not sure what you're expecting. Both those teams played the Aussie standard of 4 seamers and a spinner and chose to call on their spinner a heap with the spinners having solid results.

Poms no doubt won the toss and are happy to bowl on this Manuka greentop.
In fact Aussies won the toss with skipper Pete Handscomb surprisingly choosing to bat on a decidedly green grassy Manuka Oval deck. Means they will face the pinkie first at and after dusk which will please the Pom pacers.

Kellaway and Konstas off to a decent start to sit at 50 after 12 overs...

Kellaway was dropped at slip, pretty easy one.

Wonder if uzzie calling the perth pitch a "piece of shit" will be the final straw that ultimately costs him his place in the side.

In the PM XI game this Tom Haines guy is bowling about as quick as I see in the local under 16s.
got Konstas out trying to hit him into the next postcode

EDIT: lol CA text comms "OUT! Caught. Tom Haines to Sam Konstas. Length ball, driving, mis-timed to mid on, caught by Potts." that is definitely NOT what happened.
