We will need a benefactor for the enormous payout he will get when we sack him

Realistically though he was locked in a soon as the AFL expanded the finals to 10 teams. He will make the top 10, therefore making finals, and that will be a "success"

So Ken has the record for most games coached without making a GF, surely Mafhew isn’t far behind the record for most games coached without winning a final. Anyone know?

Have we not learnt anything with the timing of these re-signings from our neighbours.

If they want to extend him to take pressure off then I don't want to see more than 1 year.
I suspect the length of the contract is what they are discussing and why it hasn't been done yet. It will be more than 2 years. It's the AFC way.

Yeah, up them and their more recent premiership than ours, lol suckers.
But you have to embrace teal. No one is even sure what that really is. When you get in the inner sanctum can you please let us know.

The most was VFL coach, Alex Hall from the 1910s, who coached 155 games without a finals win across numerous clubs.

In terms of a coach at one single club without a single finals win, Nicks is equal top on 131 games (with some Footscray coach from the 1940s) : https://afltables.com/afl/stats/coaches/coaches_idx.html

I posted these stats in the Sid Draper thread.

Nicks vs Mcrea played 7 won 1
Nicks vs C Scott played 7 won 1
Nicks vs Longmire played 6 won 0
Nicks vs Fagan played 8 won 2
Nicks vs Goodwin played 7 won 2
Nicks vs Hardwick played 7 won 2
Nicks vs Longmuir played 6 won 1
Nicks vs Mitchell played 6 won 2
Nicks vs Beveridge played 6 won 3

Nicks has coached us in 131 games, won 55.

Against these six teams
North, West Coast, Port, Carlton, Hawks & Saints

Played 51 won 34.

Against these six teams
Freo, Sydney, Geelong, Collingwood, Richmond & Brisbane

Played 43 won 8.

It will likely be futile, as clubs (particularly those that don’t have to answer to their members via an elected board) do whatever they want, but why not reach out to the CEO in a respectful/reasonable manner with concerns. At least to show that not everyone is enamoured with the idea.

If they must insist on making such a call early, a one year with strict KPI’s 🤞

We don't learn from others. Why would we? We are clearly the most respected and successful organisation in history.

I eagerly await the "but an uncontracted coach brings undue pressure and distractions" brigade.

You know what brings pressure? Losing home finals.
And remember 2024 when we signed him up early to reduce all the pressure and outside noise?

Is there not anyone down at the club who even has the slightest, nagging doubt gnawing away somewhere in the back of their mind who thinks that just maybe there's a slight chance that he's a great guy, well liked, good for culture but may fall just short of being a successful AFL coach?

We don't learn from our own errors, let alone from those of other clubs

The club doesn't listen to external noise, but also when it comes to re-signing the coach they are worried about external noise

Really frustrating, would make sense if he was in say his third year but he has had such a long run at it.

The issue is in the background after last year everyone in the football department wants an extension and the club would see it that you can't wait and see on Nick's while others are negotiating. You also can't lose everyone.

I don't agree with it but that's whats happening.

So Rowey and Ginever are questioning why we need to go early. I am yet to hear one explanation why we would. Having an out of contract coach at season end will have ZERO impact on our first half of the year and there is ZERO chance another club will poach him.

Let Silvers and Olsen pay out his contract from their own pocket and see if they are in such a hurry, easy to rush in when it’s not your money and the members can foot the bill.

For the life of me...I cannot see one single business reason why this is necessary now.

Can anyone offer a serious justification on behalf of the club for the urgency of this matter?

Happy to have a conversation without a fight...but I'm completely bewildered by the strategic and operational necessity of this.

Anyone?

When coaches are in the final year of their contract it's always a media shit show and distraction, so they lock them away earlier. Also aren't there restrictions on how much you have to pay out on a coaches contract anyways?

As I posted its a reward for the 7 years and the position he got us to

It gives him clearer air next year to continue

Its also why we keep our line coaches.

''why change a good thing ''

I have my doubts but its why its getting talked about

This is the smoking gun to get the club to put the breaks on.

Let mainstream media in on this fact. Kane will love this.

Okay...but clearer air to do what? It's not like he's about to become some radical experimental coach who throws caution to the wind.

Baffling.
