As the title says, I'll post the top 10 for a particular year's Hottest 100 and rearrange from best to worst with the benefit of hindsight. Feel free to name your preferred number one or greatest snub. The first year is 1997, as that was what I was listening to this morning. The top 10 as voted at the time was...

No Aphrodisiac - The Whitlams
Song 2 - Blur
Tubthumping - Chumbawumba
Bittersweet Symphony - The Verve
Back Door Man - Pauline Pantsdown
Dammit - Blink-182
Paranoid Android - Radiohead
The Beautiful People - Marilyn Manson
Karma Police - Radiohead
Leaving Home - Jebediah

I almost don't have to make my list, just a few tweaks in the bottom half for me.

No Aphrodisiac - The Whitlams
Dammit - Blink-182
Leaving Home - Jebediah

Biggest snub, Everlong didn't even make the 100, but would easily fit into my top 10.

Obviously this rank is by my personal preference and not a rank of popularity that the H100 is.

I actually don’t mind Tubthumping. It’s simple and it is, for all intents and purposes, shit. But it is, to me, louts, lads, beer, fun. Things I associate with a good time.

I tend to agree; I was listening to this hottest 100 the other day and I didn't mind the song when it came on. I think the fact it was picked up by mainstream media and thrashed to death, as well as its very high ranking, contributed to it becoming something of a joke. Also, Chumbawamba never followed up on it with another hit as big, so it became something of a footnote. If it had finished at 10 or 11, I don't think it would have the negative reputation it does now.

Interestingly, the band didn't take off because their sound is generally the opposite of radio friendly, being an anarcho punk pop band. You can hear definitely hear some of that in Tubthumping. And, of course, it sounds like a fun party song even if it's not about that.

1000 per cent this.

At Oasis the other week I actually thought to myself at one point when I was having a beer before the concert outside the stadium and all the Britpop stuff was playing at ear splitting levels and everyone was just having the time of their lives ‘Tubthumping would probably be a perfect song for right now, or a Supergrass song.’

2010

Big Jet Plane - Angus & Julia Stone
Rock It - Little Red
Dance The Way I Feel - Ou est le Swimming Pool
Plans - Birds of Tokyo
Fall At Your Feet - Boy & Bear
Teenage Crime - Adrian Lux
**** You - CeeLo Green
Tokyo - The Wombats
Magic Fountain - Art vs Science
Somebody to Love Me - Mark Ronson

This one is more difficult. While the 90s Hottest 100s feel like they are full of bangers with the odd comedy song, this feels like it has less songs that have stood the test of time and some I can't even remember. Some of it is nostalgia as the 90s were my musical formative years, but I still love new music and don't subscribe to the idea that all new stuff sucks.

What a shit top 10, I had completely forgotten about that Fall at Your Feet cover

**** You - CeeLo Green
Dance The Way I Feel - Ou est le Swimming Pool
Somebody to Love Me - Mark Ronson
Tokyo - The Wombats
Big Jet Plane - Angus & Julia Stone
Rock It - Little Red
Teenage Crime - Adrian Lux
Plans - Birds of Tokyo
Fall At Your Feet - Boy & Bear
Magic Fountain - Art vs Science

Very surprised to see the CeeLo Green love. Listening to it, I thought it was still a good break-up song, even if the vocals are a bit whiney. But thought most would have it much lower. I agree, it's a bog average top 10, some songs completely unremarkable. Magic Fountain is a poor dance track and even though it's not my cup of tea, Barbara Streisand was right there at number 15. Also, Fall at your Feet is a great song and Boy & Bear give it their own twist but I personally hate Like a Versions in the top 10 of the Hottest 100. Padding it out is fine, but there's enough good original music to fill a top 10. Anyway, my top 10...

Dance The Way I Feel - Ou est le Swimming Pool
Rock It - Little Red
Tokyo - The Wombats
**** You - CeeLo Green
Somebody to Love Me - Mark Ronson
Plans - Birds of Tokyo
Big Jet Plane - Angus & Julia Stone
Teenage Crime - Adrian Lux
Fall At Your Feet - Boy & Bear
Magic Fountain - Art vs Science

Bloodbuzz Ohio by The National and Arcade Fire at 58 and 64 with The Suburbs and Ready to Start pretty wild misses for mine. Those two bands almost define that era for me.

Teenage Crime - Adrian Lux (I didn't remember this well enough and had to re-listen)

The Boy & Bear song wasn't a "Like A Version" it was from the He Will Have His Way Finn Brothers Tribute album.

Cigarettes Will Kill You holds up very well and would have been a deserving number one. Good year for Aussie music with Lee, Powderfinger, You Am I, Gurg, Living End, Jebediah and Custard. Don't think Pretty Fly is a horrible song, just landing at number one increased the criticism to the point it's considered a complete joke. I like that Custard were going for something different, but it just isn't a particularly good song.

Some pretty wild misses with No Surprises by Radiohead and Given to Fly by Pearl Jam in the 50s, both would sit in my top 10.

A very strong ten for the most part. Pauline Pantsdown feels out of place (should've stuck with the one song really) and MM just isn't my thing at all.

Tough one to rank. Not a terrible ten, but nothing that really stands out at #1. Pretty Fly would've basically been the Thrift Shop of that year. A dumb novelty song that became popular at the right time, but most were sick of it by the time the countdown rolled around.

Yeah, pretty forgettable, I feel 2011 had more songs that have stood the test of time better.

Had to go back and listen to a few of these as I haven’t heard some of them in a long time.

I feel like Pretty Fly, just like Tubthumping, gets a bum rap, in this case because it came in at number 1. If it had come in at 5, people might view it as an amusing song from a band that was traditionally quite heavy (Smash is an all-timer for me). But it came in at 1, took off in the mainstream and kinda encouraged them to ditch the anger and deliver some more comedy songs.

Joker and The Thief - Wolfmother (I know it became fashionable to hate on them and they never followed that first album up, but this is an absolute banger that is regularly wheeled out today to rev people up. Unbelievable that it finished behind Mind's Eye)
