Collingwood were BRUTAL on some of the squad that couldn't get it done in 2018 - basically dumping Grundy, Treloar and Stephenson after signing them on good deals.
They got smashed in the media for it at the time but it was the kind of brutal decisiona that are a lot easier to make when those guya DON'T bring you a flag. It did of courae allow them a lot more list flexibility to build the team for 2023...a couple of Daicos helps too.
You are rigjt about the injuriea - McGovern, Shuey, Yeo and Naitanui - The Soresome Foursome - throw in Sheppard's retirement and the pointy end of talent on the field is getting thinner. Gaff and Darling are suddenly relied on too much as they aged and the rest is history...
They were as cooked as us except for Daicos and McRae being a tactical genius. Still, were less than a kick off losing another flag (but so were we for our last two).Collingwood were BRUTAL on some of the squad that couldn't get it done in 2018 - basically dumping Grundy, Treloar and Stephenson after signing them on good deals.

They were brutal yes, but it wasn't performance related, they simply had a bursting salary cap and didn't have a choice.Collingwood were BRUTAL on some of the squad that couldn't get it done in 2018 - basically dumping Grundy, Treloar and Stephenson after signing them on good deals.

Looks to me like they just kicked the can down the road. They're in for some Eagles level pain over next 5 years. If so, I think people can stop blaming us for all own problems, as it would be Eagles, Tigers and Pies all bottomed out (when all were competing around 2020). That's just how it works unless you have an unfair advantage (Northern academy or Geelong farmland)

Add Melbourne to that list
I’d like to also say Geelong but they seem immune to bottoming out

Yes it worked out for them in the end, but those players(maybe not Stephenson) would still be on Collingwood's list if they didn't have cap issues.
Crazy Collingwood could've had Finn Callaghan and Nick Daicos, but they traded their 2021 1st
It had to be done, they mismanaged the capThey made the decision to relieve their cap with some very bold moves - jettisoning the star ruckman they had just re-signed on a mega deal, the gun mid they had lured from GWS and a guy not that long removed from winning the RS.
Those are big decisions and brutal calls, they could have gone in another direction (shed older guys like Sidebottom and Pendlebury, moved on lower level players) but they went nuclear and it ultimately jagged a flag.
They traded pick 2 for 24 and 30Doubtful. But they were rightly rorting the system to get as much from thelat 1st round pick as possible - much like GC with Petracca.
They traded pick 2 for 24 and 30
Could have had Callaghan and NickAnd took the pick 2 out of the equation when drafting Daicos.

They've conceded they were forced to do it due to mismanagement. All clubs would've done the same thingThe thing is - did they breach? - no.
They moved on bad contracts and continued to pursue new talent - and just a couple of years later had a flag to show for it.
They were in a tight spot but if anything, they 'managed' their cap.
This isn't like Richmond making the 'choice' to move on Baker, Bolton, Graham and Rioli - none of those wanted to stay at the Tigers. The Pies knifed guys that had committed long term to the club - ugly but ultimately effective.
This reminds me of a news clip when I was kid, a looong time ago.
A reporter was out on some farmland reporting on the spaghetti shortage as the crops weren't growing well.
He bends down to show the crops and there are sprinklings of Heinz spaghetti over the leaves.
He was deadly serious and it was on one of the commercial tv stations 6pm news shows.
It was also April 1st.
1957, how old are you????

Yes and no. Treloar and Stephenson were purely salary cap related in 2020. Grundy was 2 years later and there were different issues going on there. I'm not so sure there was a lot of strategic genius in there. They made the decision to relieve their cap with some very bold moves - jettisoning the star ruckman they had just re-signed on a mega deal, the gun mid they had lured from GWS and a guy not that long removed from winning the RS.

yeah that was the annoying partAs opposed to Carlton, who got flogged by Brisbane the first week and were rewarded with a home final against a team that finished above them and won.
