Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn: Ollie Greeves

seems he may have already gone past HH as our big, slow midfielder. Has the added benefit of being capable as a forward.

Early days and its only preseason training, however, he appears to be travelling better than expected, according to track watches.

I guess at least HH has no 3 preseasons in body development as opposed to Ollie.
Huss is going well himself. He has had his moments in pre season

Ollie is a fascinating watch for me. All the other clubs overlooked him so would love to see him shine.

As this pre season progresses the more I see of Ollie the more I think he will be a steal.

He has great composure in traffic and follows that with great skill. His kicking inside 50 is sublime. Some of our other players only wish they could execute like him. Can't wait to watch him play at Box hill or even the trial game to really see how he plays in game. It will give us a much better indication of his future, but I have high hopes.
Is his running a weakness to the degree it could delay him debuting?

This is a great read. It’s always hard to keep perspective in preseason when it’s not real and heroes on the training track can get found out when the real stuff starts. But I keep circling back to Ollies prelim where he had 35 and kicked 4 and just can’t help but think the kids a proper footballer. He might go past HH and McKenzie pretty quickly if this translates into the real stuff.

I suspect his ceiling may be a Worpel where he ends up being limited by his speed but even if this is so he would be a handy pick up.

I'm sure if he's got all the other skills that we can adjust our game plan to accommodate his perceived lack of zip.

As Sam has already said, what we did last year didn't work so we have to do something different this year.

Worpel was also held back by his disposal, more than anything. Sounds like that's not the case with Ollia.

The history of the draft is littered with players that have been passed over not because what they can do but what they can't do. Ollie has the tools to be a decent player if he can he can fix his deficiencies and time will tell if he can round out his game and at worst mask those weaknesses which will only happen if he puts in the work.

Gonna go for a bit of a left field selection but I'd go Roughy.

I think if he was drafted today they'd play him as a mid rotating forward.
If he hadn't done his achilles he could have been that anyway, those that have seen Ollie live is his pace any slower then Rough's was could Ollie become that Mid rotating forward Follower, that Rough could have been.

What's Ollie Jumping like?

Greeve's pace is fine.
His 20m time is pretty decent (better than Sharp's), especially so for a big lad.
It's his endurance that needs work.

I don't think it was speed that limited Worps.

Have to be one of the most polarising draft picks I can remember. From 18 in Towmey's November Power Rankings (🤮) to 12 in the rookie draft.

I hope you make it young man.
I still remember jed mcentee. Was rated the number 1 pick the year before his draft, ended up going at our first pick in the rookie draft, and never played a game

He’s basing it on someone else’s post on Bigfooty that is likely based on nothing.

I managed to find a list of top 10 draft camp results.

It's interesting to note that the Hawks picked up 3 players from the top 2k times and none from the 20m times.

Does this indicate that the Hawks prioritise endurance over speed? Interesting choice as in my observation It's easier to add endurance to speed than to add speed to endurance... 🤔

Do you know what his 20m time is? Where do you access that kind of data..?
I missed his time for the 2km time trial:
  • the 16th best EVER time for a 2km time trial at the draft combine is 6.00
  • The equal-7th best time in 2025 was Aiden Schubert's 6.21.

How are people so bearish on this guy "because of his athleticism" when he's pulling numbers superior to Sharp's, who is also a couple of inches shorter and lighter, especially when OG has only been focusing on footy full time for one season???

OK, he's got work to do, but falling to rookie doesn't make any sense to me at all.

Greeves
2km: 6.40 -
20m: 3.10s
Agility: 8.24s

Sharp
20m: 3.12s
Agility: 8.75s

3.10 for 20m is pretty fast, although I believe they use laser gates to start the timer, so there's no reaction time. it's probably the equivalent of about 3.3. 🤔

That's still fairly fast. Maybe mid-high 11s...

this news is great and very encouraging,
but .....
it would be bizarre and an absolute blight on all AFL recruiters (including our own) if this kid ends up getting senior time this year.
there are plenty of great Rookie stories, [PLAYERCARD]Luke Breust[/PLAYERCARD] being the greatest, but I'm pretty sure virtually all did a reasonable apprenticeship at the lower levels first.

Huh?

If he earns a call up, he gets a call up. Participation ribbons, for selection, are for u12s and below.

The way Greeves moves from what I’ve seen he’s just basically a taller Sam Mitchell
Not in the slightest. Greeves has a very penetrating kick. Greeves can push forward and take marks. At under 18 level he's a physical bully.

There was a clip shared yesterday of him missing a tackle on Newcombe. And the thought being "bit harder when you aren't bigger and stronger than everyone" But he's still bigger than Newcombe who is amongst the toughest players in the AFL.

He isn't as solid just yet but if he works hard he will be a bully in the AFL too.
