QAFL 2025

Article mentions ?longest losing streak in QAFL. Not the longest losing streak in QAFL. Western Magpies (Sherwood) lost 42 in a row (last 6 games in 2003 before relegated and winless in 2009 and 2010). Mounties won last game in Round 15 2023, so I reckon they have lost 41 in a row
Any updates on this ?

I’d say a different comp Doc, definitely lost all games in 09 and 10 which I put down to poor coaching….Also we played in the QAFL in 2004 reckon we won 7 games and were 2 games out of the finals with the reserves playing finals and colts maybe winning it (can’t quite recall) then had 3 drafted same year but were on the rise onfield probably not off it…before going to the piney cup in 2005 which was fantastic and loved the real tribal competition atmosphere… but cost us a generation of players that would have made us more sustainable.. even though NEAFL was whole different kettle of fish on not for us …which only Aspley Redland and Southport survived… now we are financially healthy and no longer losing players to qafl clubs (due to higher level) hopefully some sustained success will follow… been 5 years since playing in finals, interesting that the QAFL now is a hybrid of those comps …

Good summary PG (maybe a bit harsh on the coach of the time... :) ) - certainly the Pineapple Cup was a super comp for a 10-12 yr period and a real good 2nd tier of footy that supported the QAFL standard very well.

Thanks, MortlockWatcher

I saw this Courier Mail headline too - but couldn't read the story (no subscription).

As discussed by thunderdoc , Mt Gravatt currently has a QAFL losing streak of 41 games (R15 2023 - R20 2025).

This compares to Sherwood/Western Magpies with a QAFL run of 42 games (R13 2004 - R18 2010). However, as P Grentell noted, this is probably an unfair comparison as it also includes several highly successful seasons in the AFLQ Div 2 (Pineapple Hotel Cup) competition.

The greatest losing streak of all is one that it is often overlooked (understandably):
Morningside - 59 games (R1 1948 - R5 1954)
Even this could be discredited though: Morningside joined the A-Grade competition in 1948, and continued through until dropping out after R9 1950. They did not compete in Seasons 1951 and 1952 - then rejoined QAFL A-Grade in 1953.
(Did they compete in the QAFL B-Grade comp during those gap years? I expect so - probably something to look into further.)

I had a quick look at other clubs to see what their QAFL-level "losing streak" records look like. If I get any of these wrong, or you want to correct any aspect, drop a reply. In no particular order:

Mayne - 33 games (R2 2004 - R18 2011)
Probably unfair again, as the Tigers spent several years in the lower comp too.

Windsor Zillmere - 25 games (R3 1965 - R7 1966)

Wilston Grange - 22 games (R15 1980 - R15 1981)

Sandgate - 20 games (R6 2018 - R10 2019)

Coorparoo - 13 games (R10 1991 - R3 1992)

Kedron - 19 games (R14 1986 - R14 1987)

Western Districts - 18 games (R10 1987 - R10 1988)

Southport - 6 games (R15 2014 - R21 2014)
What a tremendous record!

Yeronga - 18 games (R3 1945 - R5 1946)

South Brisbane - 15 games (R9 1926 - R10 1927)

Valley - 11 games (GF 1923 - SF 1924)
The streak begins and ends with a Finals match. It provides an indication of the nature of the competition at that time.

Redland - 27 games (R9 2006 - R18 2007)

This is a really negative post. I might try to find the Winning Streak for each club listed to cleanse my soul.
For the record, I hope Mt Gravatt and Cam can end this streak soon.

Let's try something more positive:

I think the Longest Winning Streak at "QAFL-level" is Southport with 32 wins (QF 1989 - R14 1991).

Here is what I have been able to find for various clubs (if you disagree, please let me know):

Morningside - 25 wins (R1 2014 - R5 2015)
Sherwood/Western Magpies - 12 wins (R4 2012 - R17 2012)
Mt Gravatt - 11 wins (R16 2007 - R5 2008) - or, 13 games without a loss (R14 2007 - R5 2008, includes a Draw with Zillmere)
Mayne - 25 wins (SF2 1927 - R9 1929) - or, 31 games without a loss (SF2 1927 - R15 1929, includes a Draw with Windsor)
Windsor Zillmere - 14 wins (R3 1988 - R18 1988)
Wilston Grange - 9 wins (R11 1959 - R19 1959)
Sandgate - 22 wins (R13 1971 - R11 1972)
Coorparoo - 23 wins (R11 1963 - R11 1964)
Kedron - 12 wins (R1 1941 - R12 1941)
Western Districts - 15 wins (R19 1978 - R10 1979)
Taringa - 5 wins (R10 1933 - SF 1933)
Yeronga - 5 wins (R15 1949 - R2 1950)
South Brisbane - 11 wins (R1 1914 - R1 1920) - or, 14 games without a loss (R1 1914 - R4 1920, includes a Draw with Wynnum). Something disrupted their run. Also, 11 wins (R4 1910 - R2 1911)
Valley - 10 wins (R6 1912 - R2 1913)
Redland - 10 wins (R5 2022 - R15 2022)
Broadbeach - 21 wins (R15 2021 - QF 2022)
Labrador - 27 wins (R10 2016 - R18 2017)
Aspley - 12 wins (R3 2023 - R14 2023) - or, 15 games without a loss (PF 2022 - R14 2023, includes a Draw with Broadbeach). Also, 12 wins (R19 2023 - R8 2024)
Brisbane - 21 wins (R2 1922 - GF 1923)
City - 11 wins (R3 1905 - GF 1905)
Brisbane Lions - 12 wins (QF2012 - R10 2013) in the NEAFL
Northern Eagles - 12 wins (R7 2000 - R18 2000)

Anyone else to check?
