You aren’t the incumbent when you haven’t played the role for an extended period, he also was moved around in part because he didn’t nail down the number 6.

He also has sucked, you don’t get to keep the spot if you are in straight horrendous form.

If you aren’t going to drop him now you never will.

Like it or not Green is the no1 choice. How about actually look at the reasons Webster isn’t in the side on form. He was acceptable last year but was poor in the Windies yes wasn’t alone but was poor there. Then comes back had an injury and the two Shield games he failed every innings. Green made 90 plus in his knock for Western Australia. That’s just the batting. They also prefer Green at near 140kmph at his height than Webster with the ball. There’s also the age thing they will want to not have everyone over 30. All this leads to the point- you have to smash the door down ie centuries like McSweeney did.

GeoffreyBoycott
became the first batsman to be left stranded on 99 not out v Australia at WACA

He is the only player in Test History to carry the bat at 99*

England 215 All Out
And he’s probably still filthy on all the other batsmen who were dismissed, thereby denying him a century.

Yet was ruled out.

It's concerning to me we haven't had an update about his availability.

That was before the test, he was in the nets on day 5 was on the coverage too. Might have had a small hit on day 5. Everything out of the camp is telling us he's fine to go and he has another 5 days to recover on top of it.

Webster has averaged 47 over the last 30 matches in Shield cricket and performed perfectly capably when given the opportunity for Australia, people are acting like he averaged 22 with the bat and 79 with the ball in the Aussie team.

Not sure how he isn’t banging the door down

Sure, but he's failed in his last 4 in Shield, and was fine at test level but if we are honest was he more than that? They may play both A/R's anyway. Not as if he has McSweeney numbers this summer. I'm okay with him being the backup depth for that A/R position.

We've done it too in the past.

Wayne Phillips springs to mind immediately.
Correct Sherb.

However, Phillips is on record as telling the selectors he did not want to keep (because he knew himself he wasn't a great keeper) but they insisted on him taking the gloves.

Think it cut his career short to be honest

Or simply perform when in the Australian team, which is exactly what Webster he has done every time he has played.

Except in the most recent series against the Windies, he was fine against India, but whilst he wasn't alone he wasn't great against the Windies. That's the issue, you had that series of mediocre form, plus a poor start to the Shield. It's not belting the door down. if you are not the one that's the incumbent according to the selectors you have to belt the door down. That is just the way it is with this side/selectors.

It came about at the precise moment Rod Marsh retired, and ODIs were beginning to play a large role in the cricket calendar, therefore batting became integral in a keeper's arsenal. It also came at a time when Jeffrey Dujon was playing a huge role in West Indies' success. Although he was no Derryk Murray with the gloves, he took athletic catches and dynamic with the blade. Australian selectors would have had that in mind.

We never want to be too silly about this. Flipper had done a lot of wicketkeeping in his junior cricket and for Sturt in the SACA grade competition, so he was no bunny with the gloves. He came along on the heels of Marsh and suffered as a result of comparisons. A little like leggies post-Warne.

He would be annoyed when anyone mentioned that his Test career suffered because of his wicketkeeping. He would just say, "I played 27 Tests for Australia, how many have YOU played?". Of course, he wouldn't have had a say in the matter. When the Test selectors ask you to fill a role, you just do it, otherwise there are others who will take your place. :)

So the former New Zealand captain working as our assistant coach beat the nz coach of England well one kiwi won
TBF whats not to like about Dan Vettori.

can greens last 15 test innings

1x 50 and an average of 21

His test record in Australia
26 innings and an average of 29 with a high score of 89…

You can come up with whatever metric you want but his record both recently and in total in Australia is borderline horrific

Yet that highest score is still better than the alternative. Yes he'd like more runs, chopping and changing is not the answer. Give him this series and the next, and then if he's still in mediocre batting form make the change. There were good signs in Brisbane despite the poor shot to get out.

How about Webster actually finds form in red ball, now that's not all his fault there I agree and he should have been playing shield when he was 12th man, but selectors just don't chance top 6 bats very often for a good reason.

England said their four nights in the beach resort of Noosa had been scheduled for more than a year, which possibly leaves it as one of the best-planned parts of the tour.

Some used it in the spirit it was intended. Root, for example, had accommodation with his family away from the main drag and was never spotted near a bar. It was curious that more family members were not present for what was billed as a break from the Ashes.

For others, it was a glorified stag do. Some members of the team followed two days of drinking in Brisbane with four more in Noosa – six in total, as many days as there had been of Test cricket at this point in the tour.

Sharp stuff from he Beeb
crickets professionalism (especially from the big 4) has come on from leaps and bounds but christ this pathetic compared to most pro sides. An AFL team would be be mauled by the media and players copping fines/suspensions if they had big ones leading up to games.

I think what will save Green for Melbourne will be Australia has been struggling for a settled team, and being 3-0, the selectors would be loathe to make too many changes to a winning team. We already know Lyon will be out and suspect Cummins won't be playing, so they will only make 2 changes to the team, remembering Smith has to come back in and they will be looking at a replacement spinner.
