Then why have Royal Commissions at all?

This is the type of event that they were established for.

There are some major issues imo we need to resolve to reduce the chances of this happening again. This requires a transparent review of gun laws, hare speech & intelligence of radicals.

Labor president Wayne Swan faces calls to be sacked over Bondi vigil tweet

Former deputy prime minister and current Labor Party president Wayne Swan made the apology after Jewish leaders demanded he be dumped over a controversial post criticising attendees at the Bondi vigil.

Labor Party president and former deputy prime minister Wayne Swan has apologised for a tweet which criticised Jewish attendees at a Bondi vigil for booing Anthony Albanese after his comments were widely condemned by Jewish groups.
The Prime Minister also issued his first public comments about the social media post, saying it “was wrong and shouldn’t have been shared”. Community leaders had earlier called for Mr Swan’s resignation and intervention from the embattled federal Labor leader.
In a statement issued on Tuesday afternoon, Mr Swan said he had “reflected on the retweet”, removed the post and “(apologised) for any offence caused”.

“I understand the deep trauma the Jewish community is experiencing following the terrible terrorist attack,” he said.
“I understand that over recent years the Jewish community has experienced increased anxiety and insecurity and that rising anti-Semitism has had a real impact on their everyday lives.

“I’ve had a long association with the Australian Jewish community and I look forward to continuing to support the community and engage with their leaders.”

Earlier, NSW Jewish Board of Deputies president David Ossip said Mr Swan’s position as ALP president had become “untenable” and demanded Mr Albanese to “call out Swan and demand that he be sacked”.

“For too long, high profile individuals have been able to cast a dangerous pall over the Jewish community without consequence,” he said.

Has anyone seen how much $$$$$$$ grim Jim Chalmers has budgeted for Albanese's gun buyback scheme and who administers what's a fair price for a firearm in this scenario.....Most are quite expensive when bought new especially the high calibre long rifles and shotguns?

Imo, this horrible event, the worst since Port Arthur warrants a Royal Commission.

We need to have an informed discussion about national gun laws, hate speech, role of ASIO, etc... so we can minimise the chances of this occurring again.

We all want a safer community going forward.

Judges, barristers call for Bondi shooting royal commission

More than 130 prominent legal figures have written an open letter calling for a federal royal commission into anti-Semitism in the wake of the Bondi shooting tragedy.

A former Australian Chief Justice, multiple former judges, the first ever Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions and a raft of King’s Counsels are among 139 senior Australian Bar members calling for a royal commission into the tragic Bondi shooting.
Former Federal Court Chief Justice James Allsop AC, former NSW Federal and Supreme Court judges Sylvia Emmett AM and P. A. Bergin AO SC, former NSW Chief Justice James Spigelman AC and the inaugural Commonwealth DPP Ian Temby AO KC are among the signatories to the letter describing anti-Semitism as a national issue.

“We write as former judges and senior barristers with different religious and political beliefs, united by our commitment to Australian democratic values, the rule of law and deep concern about the state of anti-Semitism in Australia,” the letter states.

“Anti-Semitism is promulgated openly, not only by extremists and hate preachers, but also in a disturbing and increasingly normalised manner online, on social media, and in our institutions including universities.”

The open letter acknowledged arson attacks on Jewish places of worship and businesses, vandalism at a Jewish MP’s office and Jewish residences, and the fear experienced by Jewish schoolchildren and university students before the “predictable” tragedy at Bondi Beach.
“Anti-Semitism is not only a NSW problem, it is an Australian problem,” the letter continues.

“Radicalisation pathways, funding streams, online platforms, intelligence collection, border control, telecommunications regulation, and counter-terrorism laws all fall substantially within Commonwealth responsibility.
“Commonwealth agencies have the ability to examine the full national picture and play a critical role in identifying, detecting and combating extremism.”

The senior Australian Bar members said a federal royal commission was uniquely placed to address nationwide issues – including the roles of new and traditional media in the spread of anti-Semitism, examine interactions between Commonwealth and state institutions, and assess national counter-extremism frameworks and systemic gaps across jurisdictions.

“We are aware that the Government has announced a review into intelligence agencies to be conducted within the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet,” the letter states.

“A departmental review does not offer the same degree of independence, transparency, or public authority as a royal commission established under statute.”

Not everything has to be $$$ related - it is just the appropriate thing to do.

I’m sure the details will be forthcoming.

Perhaps you should just enjoy this time of year rather than be the Grinch.

PROTECT JEWISH PEOPLE, DON’TJUST LECTURE THEM

Have Anthony Albanese and his Foreign Minister been living in another country for the past two and a bit years? The Advertiser asks because both have used the same talking points this week and they do not appear to reflect the reality of what’s beenhappening in Australia.Penny Wong has been largely absent in the aftermath of the Bondi Beach atrocity.
Though she has appeared on the ABC to say “we all needed to turn thetemperature down over the last two years”. She continued: “I have arguedthat we must not bring the conflict to Australia.”On Tuesday, in the Prime Minister’s courtyard, Anthony Albanese said:“Australians want two things.
They want killing to stop in the Middle East, but they also do not want conflict brought here.”Sorry?
The definition of conflict is more than one party engaged in some kind offight. There was a war in the Middle East, as you would expect when Hamasterrorists slaughtered civilians in Israel and took hostages, but inAustralia?
When the synagogues were being burnt to the ground, firebombed anddefaced with graffiti, was there any retaliation? None.
When Jewish people were being abused, their buildings damaged and theirsafety threatened, did they go and pick a fight? No.Jewish Australians were bystanders – they were party to no conflict. So many at Bondi Beach celebrating Hanukkah had fled the USSR, or in thecase of 10-year-old Matilda’s family, Ukraine.
They had no conceivable involvement in a conflict in the Middle East, norin Australia, and the Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister should stop suggesting it. Also, it should be said there have been no mosques destroyed or Muslimsabused after the ISIS-inspired terrorism at Bondi.Opposition Leader Sussan Ley is right to argue that anti-Semitism is onthe rise in Australia. There were numerous examples of this before the Bondi terror attack.ASIO director-general Mike Burgess warned in February that antiSemitism was his agency’s No.1 priority in terms of threats to life. The Jewish community will ask again, of leaders: “What will you do to protect us?”It is time to stop lecturing and start listening.

The letter described the protection of anti-Semitism not as a political issue, but a moral one – that went to the heart of a government’s fundamental obligation to protect its citizens.
“The signatories to this letter hold differing views on many matters of public policy,” the letter continues.

“What unites us is a professional and civic concern that Australia confront extremism with seriousness, transparency, and constitutional propriety.”

Hey.. I’m all for merit based immigration if that solves the problem.. but exactly how does it?

Explain to me exactly how it stops a potential terrorist entering via immigration? What’s the list of ‘merits’ going to be?..

Give me some more details around your plan?

Actually.. how about we start with no religious people (jews, muslims, christians, hindu’s etc etc) allowed at all… none of them. Ban the lot. Seems a little bit unfair but we cant take the risk with any of them right?..

Tell you what.. can we also please stop the Brazo’s from entering under the plan?.. would make the surf up here on the goldy a little less crowded for me.. and **** me they are annoying pricks.
Some of their women can stay though..

I mean, lets face it cm_perfect..
If, as you say, the “horse has bolted” and its only 2 or 3 people out of every 3 million we need to be worried about.. then its all gonna be a complete waste of time anyway right?..

As it stands… The positives the last 25 years of migration has bought the country far outweighs the negatives by about 2,999,997 to 3…

Ol’ Slippery Pete has yet to provide a plan. Just more of his empty rhetoric.

maybe you can cm..
Ok, this is a whole lot of nothing apart from pointing fingers. What plan do you have apart from “tax religion” what next?, you expect details from others but hide behind broad statements.

Merit based = you must add value to our nation. (We have enough of our own sheet karnts, we don’t need to add to it artificially)

It’s the beer season so cant be arsed going into the details but it’s pretty straight forward if you have time to Google.

Have a great Christmas break BC (sincerely)

I know it costs plenty of money for a Royal Commission, but surely this is the type of event that should warrant one.

The public should feel comfortable that all steps are taken to minimise the chances of this occurring again. There are many issues that need to be tackled & the concern is if we don’t have a proper process of discovery, not all will be done to address the issues.

If only the PM was stronger in his conviction immediately came out & said there would be a Royal Commission... & if only the Liberals hadn't been so personal with their attacks. Both sides have been disappointing in this difficult time... when they could have had bipartisan support.

Imo all commercial activities should be taxed & currently religious groups have a competitive advantage not paying tax on businesses. Eg. Sanatarium. The ownership should not change the tax situation.

This is the best part about all of this.

When the dust settles in the new year… Labor will no doubt see this as a massive opportunity to finally bring in much tougher hate speech laws. Which won’t only give greater powers to stop antisemitic hate speech and actions.. but all racist speech and all bigoted hate speech towards minority groups such as our LGBTIQ communities.

And the opposition, after squealing like stuck pigs about antisemitism based hate speech needing to be stopped, will be cornered.

They will look like completely hypocritical fxxkwits if they try and argue that they only want laws that focus solely on the hate speech of antisemitism and not against ALL forms of hate speech.

The changes to 18c that Labor have wanted for a very long time and that have been opposed by the LNP and some of their religious backers (who fear that any changes would mean they would fall foul of the law when they dribble their racist and anti-LGBTIQ hate speech nonsense) will be enacted.

Racist and homophobic human trash like Margaret Court will find themselves in all sorts of bother for their hate speech.

Ol Izzy folau wont be able to stand at his pulpit spewing forth his ignorant homophobic nonsense.

Police will finally have the powers to silence that piece of vile, antisemitic and hateful trash Wisam Haddad.
Mars attacks - Why Can't we all just get along.gif

I've been trying to skate around this between friends and family from opposite poles pulling me apart...

There are too many people trying to take advantage of this awful incident, with the worst motives.

I said earlier what happened was a failure of process, a failure of ASIO, policing, and possibly the five eyes intelligence that was supposed to prevent this sort of shit ever happening. End of story.

That's one reason I'm against a Royal Commission (it will be a gigantic waste of money, as most of them are - and why most in the legal system are all for it, just to top up their self funded superannuation slush funds). It will be a gigantic, expensive wank. The result of it - see the previous paragraph, plus one or two small tweaks... which cost about $50-$100 million dollars less than a Royal Commission will.

I thought we were doing a great job of addressing racism and hate speech, prior to the explosion of social media ......now online, hate breeds hate, racism breeds racism .....it's so much worse than in the early 2000's

It's a "gang" mentality .....amongst a group of friends, one kicks a single person, and suddenly that action provides the green light for all the others to join in

I also believe, that many have built up societal pressures these days .....particularly females, who are expected to be both all things, career, mother, and home builder .....and, the increasing feeling in the community that various groups are given preferential treatment, such as the variance now in Annual Leave, just announced ......pressure always seeks an outlet

So, IMO, keeping these things underground, is in fact an outcome that will assist the tackling of many societal issues

Disagree, much stronger action by Governments and authorities against anti-Semitism that has run rife with fire bombing of synagogues and Jewish businesses, vandalism of Jewish businesses, schools and residences over the last 2 years especially should have been immediate.

It's a travesty that Jewish schools in particular have to have armed security guards on site and with them when on school excursions in Australia.
The way Jewish students were allowed to be abused and assaulted on University campuses should have been stamped out immediately by admin.

This is a Government that wasted $450 million on a referendum.

Talking about hate speech, and ganging up on people .....the media's behaviour towards Jo Silvagni is abhorrent !!!

She has done what any mother would do in her situation ......I find the constant denigration intolerable, with the constant referral as "The Rapist Mum"

How many other parents in similar situations have had the media target them in this fashion .....none, that come to mind

Maybe you could confirm a few things Wayne.. give us a few answers..

1) did their son have a prior history of sexual assault?
2) was their son found guilty?
3) did he do some ****n dodgy shit like doctoring an uber receipt and attempting to get his friends and family to cover up his deed?
4) did the silvagni’s try and pay for the victim and her family’s silence?
5) did Jo and SOS refuse to attend court to listen to the victim’s impact statement?
6) have they ever, even after their son was found guilty in a court of law, even acknowledged their son’s guilt?

Can you give us answers any of these?.. I am being serious here. I dont have answers as to whether some of these are rumours or confirmed truths. Maybe, given you seem to be following this closer than many.. you can provide the answers?

Ultimately though.. There is only one victim in all of this. ONE. That is the woman that was r*ped.

As for your unhappiness with the media.. what do you expect when you read the tabloid nonsense of what looks to be The Daily Mail!. Its utter trash.

All your points are true & correct .....by all means go your hardest at the perpetrator .....but not the parents, in this situation

The Silvagni's did no more or less than what you would do in the same situation .....to state otherwise is hypocritical

Anyone would do anything to protect their children, if they had the means

This is a Government that wasted $450 million on a referendum.
And yet… this Albanese government has done more to combat anti-semitism than any government in the history of Australian federal governments.. including the following;

  • Appointed a special envoy to combat antisemitism
  • Established Special Operation Avalite to investigate antisemitic threats and attacks
  • Banned nazi saultes and symbols
  • Introduced legislation that criminalised hate speech
  • Gave 32 million to synagogues to increase security
  • Upgraded holocaust education facilities nationwide
  • Improved information sharing between state and federal police to prevent antisemitic attacks

This is all on record. Thats what is great about our Westminster style of government You can look it up in the records. Every policy a government enacts is placed on record..
every single word spoken by any of our politicians in the house and senate is recorded in hansard.

So… What exactly did the previous LNP governments do in their near decade in power to reduce antisemitism Mutineer?

Please provide us with a comprehensive list of what the LNP did when last in government to try and reduce antisemitism..

This is the most disgusting part of this whole saga.. the conservative media in this country and the LNP has completely ignored what the Albanese government has done and simply pushed the bullshit line that “Albo and his government did absolutely nothing”.

And their dumbfxxk supporters simply lap it up and endlessly repeat it as if it’s the truth.

Because this isn't about stopping antisemitism to them.. nup.. this is all about scoring cheap political points against their opponents. Rallying their base and creating division if a desperate hope it gives them a boost in the polls.
Gutter trash the lot of them.

But dont worry.. looks like, thanks to Labor, we are going to get even stronger hate speech and anti-racist, anti-LGBTIQ, anti-semitic laws.

Because.. lets not just focus on just trying to reduce anti-semitism.. lets focus on trying to reduce all forms of hate speech right Mutineer?..
just as your side of politics likes to squeal “All Lives Matter not just Black Lives Matter”.. lets apply that same logic to this right?

Anyway.. I await your comprehensive list of what the LNP did when last in government to combat antisemitism.. but, as usual with you, I wont be holding my breath whilst waiting.

Bullshit.

They allowed it to fester and grow to levels never seen before in Australia along with all state Governments, and state otherwise is not only disingenuous it's utter crap.

Tell your crap to Jewish Australians that have have had their daily lives severely impacted over the last 2 years and have come to genuinely live in fear for themselves and their families.

Only the Bondi Beach massacre has dragged Albanese kicking and screaming into finally taking some serious action. The horse has bolted after the stable gate was left ajar for far too long.

How exactly were they supposed to stop it, given that the Israeli Govt have been hosing petrol onto the fire continuously for the last 2 years?

The rise in anti-semitism over the last 2 years has NOTHING to do with Albanese's Govt, who have done more to combat it than the LNP did in the previous decade. It has EVERYTHING to do with Israel's ongoing war crimes and genocide in Palestine.

The Australian Jewish community has done absolutely nothing wrong, and certainly don't deserve this. They are, unfortunately, collateral damage in a criminal war being waged by Israel.

True. I think what doesn't help is the con job by hate groups who blame immigrants for everything. So I think you made a lot of good points. But how do you create a net about hate speech that doesn't end up in the UK style censorship disaster that has police arrest and confiscat phones of 13yo because they dared like a post.
