That turn of the century side really does seem cursed. Warne and Symonds dead, MacGill and Slater with their own issues, now this. Fingers crossed for Martyn.
That's putting it mildly.

I hope Damien will be okay, meningitis is no laughing matter. :(

Looking at his stats played 67 Tests and over 200 FC games.. I actually liked that era better then the T20 one.. I remember going to a FC game in Newcastle, star studded, don't get that anymore consistently.... its a shame.

Aside from Boon, my favourite Australian player of all time and probably JUST behind The Prince as my favourite batsman of all time to watch. He was just the most effortless player.

I know guys like Khawaja get called graceful because they don’t play with hard hands or whatever but all that looks like to me is a player who doesn’t grip the bat very tight. Martyn was the most elegant player I’ve ever seen and could make a back foot push hum to the boundary quicker than a Chris Gayle slap.

Rumours of him being too cocky etc as a young player seem greatly exaggerated; and he paid a hefty price for a poor team performance in Sydney in 1994. He was quiet as a player and seems pretty reserved as a retired one too.

Really hoping he beats this. Fingers crossed Marto

A classy batter. His cover driving could be sublime.

His innings in Sri Lanka and India in 2004 were highlights of a very good Test career.

I hope he gets better soon.

Great post, totally agree with your sentiments.
In a way he was his generations Mark Waugh.
Graceful, fluent, at times elegant, effortless timing. That backfoot cover drive was a thing of beauty.
Like Waugh, he was sometimes unfairly called out for not trying hard enough (in Waugh’s case, that may have been true at times).
Good luck Marto.

Get well soon Marto

Can you imagine Katich, Waugh x 2, Clarke and Haddin sitting in the dressing room watching Mail bat at 26% SR

His wife has released a statement saying ''Damien is progressing well with his medical treatment".

She also went on to express her gratitude for the support her family has received as well as her appreciation of the work done by the staff at Gold Coast University Hospital but the important news is he's progressing well.

He has now woken from his induced coma, is talking and responding to treatment. His family is hopeful he can move out of ICU into another part of the hospital.
Awesome news!

My barber had a brain infection a few years back and was in an induced coma for months. Every time he gets an ear infection now he is at risk of dying. Once that membrane is breached it's an incredibly scary lifelong risk, let's hope thats not the case here.
