Dermott Brereton: how do opposition supporters remember him?

Always rate the smaller blokes that fight out of their weight division and Derm at 186cm and low 90 kgs was certainly doing that.

Awesome player who just allowed blokes around him to walk taller (not that the Hawks were short of these types anyway).

Mind you, 180cm John Worsfold says hi to Archer, Grinter, Dale Kickett, Modra, Wright etc

But seeing it is the Dermie thread, I show my way out with:

that Worsfold hit on Brereton was brutal. Got him a beauty

Seems a bit fishy. Tried looking for articles about it but never stated which organisation he donated to, not to say some folk have unknowingly donated money that went into the wrong hands.
He donated to an Irish charity. Nothing fishy about it except that he was falsely accused of supporting the IRA. Brereton himself addressed it publicly and there are plenty of online resources about it.

He was a very strong contender in pack mark situations and had no fear. He didn’t always take the grab but he always made sure he split the pack and take someone down with him to eliminate him from gathering the loose ball.

He was an excellent drop punt kicker and had a good all round skills for a big bloke.

I saw just about every HFC vs Ess match in the early and mid 80s and time and time again he would deliver a strong mark and goal for hawks when they needed it.

He played with reasonable controlled aggression and liked to stir shit up with opposition backman while the ball was down the other end. He’d start fights and verbally taught his opponents.

A great Australian Rules Footballer.

Is the urban myth that Dermott badly damaged his wedding tackle while dishing out a mattress shirt front correct?
Ruptured testis are no joke.

Mate of mine back in my early 20s copped a knock to a nut in a match and week later he was getting operated on to remove the purple ball which had turned cancerous.

I don’t think it was the plums. It was the main act I heard. That’s how tough blokes were back then. I doubt Lachie Neale has snapped his sword yet

From my limited experience and understanding of rod snapping is that its quite difficult to break in half.

However…if it is crushed with significant force, one can sustain an injury to their rod which causes great discomfort for a period of time.

Lachie should’ve kept his sword away from his Royal Court and gone for a secret villager girl.

Played through broken ribs and rooted through a broken sword. 💪🏼

Why did he leave the Hawks?
After a few injury interrupted years (1992 and esp 93) he was offered a pitiful contract-- we're talking base salary and no incentives -- leaving him little choice but to leave, as the club no doubt hoped. After the service he gave the club, incl so many injuries sustained he can barely move today, it was nothing short of appalling to treat a legend like that. Gary Ayres got the same treatment.
Ironically i think Derm was the Swans highest paid player 1994.
