'Very Good Year' through the middle....really?

Hewett v Thomson Dow

Rating: 7.52 v 6.94
Disposals: 16.3 v 18.5
DE%: 64.3% v 72.1%
SI's: 4.0 v 3.2
Tackles: 3.5 v 2.9
Clearances: 3.3 v 2.7
Goals: 0.5 v 0.1

Thomson Dow was just delisted.
For a 21yo who hasn’t had a preseason and started the year injured, yeah it was a very good year through the middle.

If he’s averaging the same when he’s 24yo like Thomson Dow I’ll be concerned.

Is this the same Ginbey with a 3x better kick retention rating than Hotton?

If Ginbeys a butcher what the **** is Hotton?

Hotton is 639/668 for retaining a kick compared to expectations.
oh dear....getting so desperate you are now comparing Ginbey to a first year player who had just spent more than 12-months sidelined with an ACL....is that really how desperate you've become?

But if you want to play that game...keeping in mind Hotton plays half forward and Ginbey defence, and Hotton has a 49% contested possession rate to 41% for Ginbey.

Hotton v Ginbey:

DE%: 74.2% v 72.6%
Disposals per clanger (high is good): 8.1 v 5.0
Disposals per turnover: 6.4 v 3.8
Disposal Ret %: 75 v 65.8
I50 Ret %: 33.3 v 20.0
Kick threat rating: 7.8 v -3.7 (a measure of how often a player’s kicks result in a shot at goal later in the chain compared to expectation).

Nice to try to give Ginbey a flex over 7-gamer ACL victim Hotton....but even that little game of yours failed pretty miserably.

Oh...so by 'very good year', you didn't mean compared against all of the other midfielders at AFL level.

****ing lol, not a single one of those stats is relevant, order of conversation tosimplify it for you.

Random Richmond fan > “Ginbey cant kick and always hits oppo players”
Myself > “Hotton is far worse at retaining the football by foot than Ginbey”
Yourself > “yeah but he sure does handball it a lot more”

Good one champ.

Obviously not, if that’s the standard not many 21 or under players would be able to claim to have had good years.

Pretty sure we were l comparing 1st year stat's when Ginbey started in the midfield.

So like for like. 1st year stat's v 1st year stat's.

Only difference is Hotton returning from injury.

A couple of Tigers posters hate Ginbey because Lalor was injured in a marking contest pre season. So they are grinding the axe and basically trolling Ginbey. And they don't like it when the comparisons to their kids output at the exact same stage in their careers doesn't look great.

It's a bit of a theme actually.

So no flex at all, just comparing players 1st year stats and output.
Comparing Ginbey and Hotton year 1...??

But sounds like an interesting comparison:

Hotton Debut season v Ginbey debut season (Ginbey was 43% CBA, Hotton 10%).

CC/CBA: 23.5% v 6%
Clearances; 1.4 v 2.5
CC: 0.6 v 0.8
Disposals per clanger: 8.1 v 4.4
Disposals per turnover: 6.4 v 5.3
Disposals: 12.7 v 13.7
Player Rating: 8.27 v 7.59
Goals: 0.4 v 0.1
SI: 4.3 v 2.1
SI%: 23.3 v 12.5

Ginbey played 17 games to Hotton's 7.

So Ginbey was eclipsed by a 7-gamer coming off a 12-month ACL.

Ginbey's a midfield spud. It clearly hurts you. He's shown a bit in defence, so rest easy.

If Ginbey reaches broad heights im sure most eagles supporter would love that
They do have 1 thing in common apparently both gave Jeremy cameron a bath ( broad did anyway )
The game Eagles supporters are raving about with Ginbey on Cameron:

Cameron kicked 5-goals. Got 2 x coaches votes. Got 2 x Brownlow votes. Had 10 x Score Involvements. Rated a 22.7 which is an enormous score for a forward.

Or maybe it's a different game, as surely it can't be this one we are all hanging our hat on for Ginbey....just because Jezza said he was a tough opponent?? Surely not.

11 x players in 2025 aged 21yo or under played 5+ games and had 35%+ CBA's (Hewett was 47%).

Player rating: Hewett was last (Clay Hall second last...gulp!)

From that list:
6th for clearances, 4th for goals, 6th for metres gained, 5th for SI%, 6th for CC/CBA.

A lot of the other players on the list are guns by token of being given 35%+ CBA’s at 21 or under. Hewett being in the middle of a good crop of players doesn’t overly concern me.

How high do you value the player ratings? If you rate them as high as it seems you must be absolutely devastated by the loss of Tylar Young.

Didn’t realise Hottons knee made him incapable of hitting a target by foot, really unfortunate sign for the future.

Probably a waste of a pick if he can never overcome that.
Dude i tried defending you and told everybody you are not that person but then you go and double down on this silly remark

18 year old kid coming off no football for 12 months then jumping up to AFL level
but maybe we should look at a player that plays a similar position in Elijah Hewett in his 3rd year going at 64% De compared to Taj at 74% DE

Yep, Vlastuin is/was a star. If you liked watching him you’ll love watching Ginbey the next 10+ years.
Lets hope so but so far have not seen any resemblance
Now when you say Vlastuin 'Was' You do know he is still playing career high football and should have been AA last season yeah and still has another 2-3 years

You do realize he played as a 23 year old and was delisted, so 2.5 years between them
Elijah better get a move on if he wants to avoid getting delisted by you

But they told me Giney owned him

Surely they would lie ? would they

Can a eagles supporter tell us which game Ginbey owned Jezza please

Player that has a Ridiculously high handball to kick ratio has good DE, try his kicking efficiency next.

Haven’t watched him enough.

Hence the inclusion of is, he had a seriously good year.

Elijah will have a massive year if he stays injury free. Don’t worry about that.

I did want to retain Young, but can see the logic in us not being overly panicked given we have Balta, Gibcus, Miller, Trainor, Brown and Gray all at least 12-months younger and 193cm+.

I believe Player Ratings are a good tool for comparing like for like players. But you've got to be careful when analysing relatively small sample sizes. For example, in 2025 Young only played 7 x games...his first 2 x games were wins against the very poor Bombers and Eagles - he averaged 16.3. The remaining 5 x games were losses in which he averaged 8.2.

So for players in 2025 who played 5+ and averaged 1+ defensive 1v1, his 2 x games against Bombers and Eagles with average of 16.3 placed him #1 from 89 x players. His remaining 5 x games average of 8.2 placed him 47th.

In 2023 he played a more substantial 19 x games, averaged 8.01 and ranked 61st of 103 x players with 5+ games and 1+ def 1v1's.

I think Young is a good acquisition for the Eagles, but given he turns 28yo end of 2026 it was a no-brainer to not sell the farm to try and keep him given our younger KPD stocks already on the list.

Taj Hotton has played 7 x games and has had 31 x kicks in his career...what a great time to analyse his KE%..hahaa.

Interestingly, for mid-fwd, gen-fwds with 7+ games, his 'kick threat rating', which measures how often his kicks result in a shot at goal later in the chain compared to expectation, Hotton ranks 26th of 135.

This kid is going to be an attacking weapon!

Quality post showing you have no idea.

Again.

Multiple junk time goals after being well held across 3 and a half quarters. The Eagles midfield ran out of petrol as young teams do and the last 15 minutes Geelong ran away with the game.

That was a superb performance. Not just shutting down Cameron but basically single handedly holding your defence together against a mountain of ball coming in. Then got hung out to dry by the rest of the team for 4 junk time goals. His game against Adelaide was also huge.

The posters calling Ginbey a spud are the same guys who were talking up Cumberland, Sonsie and Brown as future stars a couple of years back when they couldn't get a game. Call me crazy but I reckon a top 10 pick who finished runner up in the B&F as a 20 year old is going pretty damn well.
