Before the 2027 Ashes series in England, Australia and England meet at the MCG to mark the 150th anniversary of the first Test cricket match held in March 1877.

It is also 50 years since the epic Centenary Test in March 1977 which saw Australia win by the same margin as the first game 100 years before-45 runs.

So who will be playing for Australia and England at the MCG in March 2027?

Discuss.

Australian XI
Head
<OPENER> - I can't tell what we're going to do there
Marn
Smudge
Kez
<BATTER> - Would argue Slug (he's the most old school cricketer I've seen in a long time), but given the selectors would say maybe a younger bloke. Pending Shield form.
Green
Starc
Cumdawg
Lyon (we WILL play a spinner in the anniversary match regardless of D/N)
Hoff/Boland/Neser (Hoff injury status + Bol/Nes Shield, Neser with a D/N edge)

The extra bowler vs extra batter will be pitch dependent.

Don't like the idea of having this match. Interferes with the footy season.
Yeah not sure how it will work. The cricket runs Mar 11-15 2027 which is when round 1 falls this year – so going by that, there will be no games at MCG the first two rounds (providing they persist with that whole Round 0 bullshit). An October grand final i guess

Renshaw
Kellaway - good mix of 'experienced' and 'young gun' opener
McSweeney - think Lab will eventually get the boot
Smith
Head - I still think ideally they see his best position at 5, if we have two established openers performing, Head will drop back
Carey
Webster - barring a collapse in form or a surge from Green, surely he stays
Cummins
Starc
Murphy - think we will have established Life After Lyon
Bartlett - throwing in a slightly younger bowler as all the other options will be 36-37 and the regeneration will have begun.

Kellaway first class average of 31. Current season record of 300 runs at 31.

Agree we can't pick under any one under 35 who has any potential let's pick a 37 year old Peter Handscomb who can keep and AVGs 40 in first class cricket :moustache:

You want to pot the youth of Aussie cricket have a pick what the team will look like jacko?

Strawman. Promoting young players and merit based selection aren't mutually exclusive.

thread is for a test in 2027 and you are knocking kellaway who looks a No brainier.who do you think will get picked instead of him at this point? You are happy to pot the youngest, who are you picking at this second?

I like the look of Kellaway but I’d probably still want him to have a couple more prolific summers for Victoria and see if he can get that FC average touching 40. In terms of 2027, as it’s only just over a year away, it’s hard to see Kellaway breaking into the XI through the remainder of this season and just one summer.

Selectors will probably persist with Weatherald for a few more games given the gap until our next test and after that, can see them trialling Renshaw again. Who knows though.

a) It's a prediction thread for 18 months time. No reason Kellaway can't continue his development and have solid numbers by then

b) Selectors have kept picking him in the 'A' teams so obviously that indicates their thinking is that he's up there.

Prediction that is not based on performance

Head
Kellaway
Renshaw
Smith
McSweeney
Webster
Carey
Cummins
Richardson
Morris
Lyon/Kuhnemann

Possibly two 38yos might be enough. We do need to transition the bowling. I actually this a couple of years ago and they are still here and bowling very well...haha. Time has to come though.

Scored 71 against England A against Tongue and Potts. Scored 81 in the PM XI game.

Often FC pitches are juiced up a bit more to get a result in 4 days.

When they asked Bethell why he hadn't made a FC century he said FC and Test pitches are so much different. Probably some of that here.

I don’t think the changes will be as severe as many think:

Head
Weatherald/Renshaw
Marnus
Smith
Carey
Green
Webster
Cummins
Starc
Lyon/Murphy
Boland

Everybody has to play the same conditions.

Is this side selected to give England a chance?!
Whats wrong with it?
Renshaw for weatherhold
Kellaway in for labaschagne
Peake (a young gun blooded for Khawaja)
Webster should've played the whole Ashes to begin with
Time to rejuvenate and pension Lyon and the third quick off in the next 12 months
Rest of side the same

Seems like the new recruits are all Victorians with the two batsmen both averaging under 32.
