Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn: Jack Dalton

With his elite running/endurance I had thought it would be a given he'd have a crack on a wing. But I guess if his actual pace is somewhat lacking and he just has a consistent cruising speed it may not work.

However, I do think Morrison's spot must be under pressure. Morrison and CJ had been the ones for the last couple of years who weren't quite doing enough. Morrison has improved his game involvement/average possessions but his disposal and decision making is still VFL level. If we can get either someone in the backline to free up Impey or Amon onto the wing or just slot someone straight onto the wing I think our link up play will be far more damaging.

I've only seen a couple of still shots, but it seems like he doesn't open his elbow up on the downswing. This is usually a common trait for runners who do lots of endurance work and not very much speed.
These athletes tend to be able to go all day at a certain pace but find it difficult to ramp up their speed in a single moment.
It's a tricky habit to undo, but it can be done. Open up the arm and you open up your hips. That's where the power comes from.
Hopefully he can learn this... 👍

What utter tripe

Harry is best 22 on merit after having the best season of his career.

He was excellent last season.

The amount of times Harry popped up to take a goal saving mark, or lay a tackle to stop a breakaway or just be in the right place at the right time was incredible.

He's turned into a very good solid player - and he won't be getting dropped anytime soon.

VFL decision making?

Staggeringly poor take.

Agreed. If anything, the quality of his disposal inside 50 has been a strength of his.
Look at the compilation video of Gunston's goals and see how many of them came from Morrison nailing a pass...

Harry's drawback is he isn't the most dynamic athlete. He's a great runner but doesn't have much in the form of speed/agility.

His disposal is also neat without being damaging. He does have a good footy brain though which is essential for a wingman.

He's the opposite of CJ in that regard. Elite athleticism but poor disposal/footy IQ which saw him having to utilise his athleticism to make up for positional deficiencies, especially when tracking back defensively. Harry finds himself in the right spots 90% of the time and played a great season for us.

These criticisms of Harry just seem bizarre.

Jacks not the quickest on our list by any means, but he’s also not slow at all. He is a zippy little blur in most drills.

This kid will be a ripper, reminds me of Tim Clarke but will surpass little Timmy in ability in his first year

Jack The Ripper??

PS I missed your post saying Ollie will be a ripper. Maybe you don't think so, but I guess four rippers out of five selections is not to bad.:)

He'll get relatively faster as the game goes on.

I agree, you can make valid criticisms of Harry in regards to things like athleticism / power / speed / size but it's a bit unusual to have a crack at his decision making / disposal (along with his football nous and endurance those are his main strengths).

Poor Harry cops the raw prawn more than most on here I find. Maybe because he is so "Vanilla" but I've always considered Vanilla to be the finest of the flavours (apologies to Barenaked Ladies).

thats good but I like Royal Dalton myself, has a nice ring to it. ;)

Harry's good to have in a strong team.

He does all the right things and gets to the right spots.
Good character and leadership.
He won me over last season.

Is this a thread about Jack Dalton? Or Harry someone?

It's about Dalton because there's speculation that he could be competing for Harry Morrison's place in the team. People are discussing the merits of athleticism compared with football nous, and as such they are evaluating Morrison's disposal effectiveness...

I know I've sung the kids praises before, but honestly Dalts is looking to be the steal of the draft.

He continues to impress.

Physically he's grown a bit, his fitness is even better than when he was drafted, and his wrists seem to be 100% fine - no lingering issues.

It's his attitude that really stands out.

He constantly seeks feedback and wants his weaknesses to be front and centre of any coaching conversation.

Some players try to hide their weak traits - Dalton wants then identified so he can seek out the appropriate coaches and players and turn that weakness into a strength.

He continues to stay back at training to work with senior players and does extra sessions away from Dingley at his own initiation - sometimes roping one of the senior guys in as well.

He's a sponge!

He just won't quit. In a tackle, a chase, or a loose ball - he goes 100%.

Still has things to work on - I'd say his off-ball positioning remains a work in progress - but you can see the improvement in his skills as pre-season goes on.

Smoky for an early debut IMHO.

Thanks for the update HTB.

The club traded up to get this guy. A significant vote of confidence.

I'd honestly be shocked if he doesn't debut this year. Easily the most likely of our recent draftees.

He's already in the top 5 endurance runners at the club. He's going to slot straight into high half forward when CMAC, Moore or Ginni miss or are rested.

If CMAC takes to mid, or Moore is needed, a spot opens up even with all available.

Our high half forwards are crucial to the way we play. Even more so without Day as we need them to push up at stoppages, then spread.

I won't set that high an expectation, but I feel he might be our own version of Murphy Reid and not give up his spot once he debuts. He just feels like a perfect fit for the way we play.

Reminds me a lot of Dylan Moore

I agree, l think he will be one of the steals of the draft and l would be surprised if we don't see him debut at some stage.
Jack has a very hardworking mindset, he was told that he would be out for 12 months when the doctor first saw him and returned in 11 weeks.
I believe he captained Vic in the under 16 championships and won the MVP for Vic Metro which shows he has leadership qualities.
He just screams the type of player Mitchell would love having at the club and look forward to seeing him develop.
I think the Hawks nailed the draft on all picks.

He was a decent loss in the finals because he provides that 2 way running on the Wing and he's defensive capabilities would have prevented some of the easy passages across the games. Still getting underrated it seems.

Murphy Reid is one of Freo's best. Wouldn't mind him becoming a top 10 player at the club in his first year!

I imagine Butts gets first crack at HHF if Croc plays permanent mid. But Dalts would be first in line pending a rest.

I see what you did there.
