I don’t think depth is ‘built’. Depth are the players that should be looking to looking to improve upon but reality is there not much point selecting beyond the 3rd round, so you keep them around until they can be replaced with a decent replacement. Rinse and repeat.
Which is a problem when you have regularly traded out 1st & 2nd rounders...

Port took Lukosius off Gold Coast as a salary dump & should never have given up a 1st rounder... & they gave up a 2x All Australian as part of the package.

Luko and Rat should have come with a second rounder. Absurd list management. Stands out to me as one of the greatest misreads of all time.

To be fair, similar to us when we got Gibbs, it was valued as a late first rounder at the time. Future trading carries risk and if you’re spending, it’s always you wearing the discount.
Yes similar, however Gibbs was supposed to be the cherry on the cake ..... I get that deal desperation

But when Clubs chase Free Agents with huge offers ..and the Club is no-where near being in flag contention, you have to wonder who's in charge of the Monopoly Game

Luko was supposed to fix Port's fwd woes .....he came to Port, partly because GCS were playing him in DEF

Lo & behold, PS chat is Port are also tossing up playing Luko behind the ball .....Marshall too ....seems to me with all that trading in of defenders (who failed), and the trading out of Houston ....there's finally a recognition Ports defense is crap

The Houston trade remains unfathomable

Pretty sure that Port had played in a prelim the season they traded for Luko. His acquisition is exactly the same as us going for Gibbs. Looking at what Saints are doing is probably what you’re referring to. But Luko to Port and Gibbs to us was the same scenario, both believing the acquisitions would get them closer to a flag that went all that far away.

They should have just said no and walked away.

Yes, but Charlie & Jonas gone, Boak on his last legs .....trade Duursma & Houston ....no Rucks to speak off remaining

So you'd need Port rose coloured glasses to believe Luko was a cherry on top scenario

So - the concept works in the two state sport that is NRL.

Does it work in any other sport anywhere else?

I think people making this argument forget that state of origin was an Aussie Rules initiative first, and was hugely popular for a period of time. There is no reason the concept can’t work again. It’s worth remembering that the idea of bringing state of origin back has been around for some time and it’s not something that the AFL administration has really been pushing for. It’s gotten off the ground because the support for it has largely been organic from both fans and players alike.

IMO, the success of SOO will be determined by 3 key factors:

  • Fan interest. Given the game is likely to sell out, it’s a tick so far.
  • Player investment. We’ll know pretty early on whether they’re fair dinkum or not. I think the passion for the game is there, but my concern is that given the timing of the game, players won’t have the trust in their bodies yet to go flat out.
  • Competitiveness. It’s inevitable the Vics will win most of the games, but WA or SA will need to pinch a game or two early in the piece for it to be successful.

Port trading a very good pick for Luko as well has splitting their first rounder for Ratugolea will go down as some of the worst trades in their history. Absolute madness.

They should count themselves extremely lucky JHF fell in their lap and West Coast rolled over to help them get it done, and all their academy kids coming in.

Still lose Butters and will be a big mountain to climb.

I really don’t see how anyone competes with Brisbane, Gold Coast and maybe Geelong (pending next group of FAs they get) for the next 5 years so might all be for nothing.

Visentini will be a very good ruckman, perhaps Carr will finally give him the opportunities he deserves.

I was watching an SC video on Rucks last night, and how opponents went against certain oppo rucks ......Sweet and Flynn were the league bunnies for getting whooped by their direct opposition

I can see why PORT would want to fast track Visentini

Anyone got an explanation on the Channel 7 promo for the upcoming AFL season ?? A clip highlights an umpire bouncing the ball, a previous fabric of the game, that has now been done away with by the AFL and their rule changes. Could they not find an exciting clip of an umpire throwing the ball up ?? Why didn’t they also show a player being subbed off the ground, one of the other major rule changes that comes in to effect ??

Butters has to be a hot favourite to win the Brownlow, even in Port loses he'll pick up a ton of votes. He'll be even more of a favourite if he goes home to a Vic club next year.

He is always a good poller but i would be surprised if he can win in a losing team. Theres losing in close games and polling but its unlikely he will poll in 50 point loses which you would expect the power will have quite a few.

And yet, there are posters applauding the aggressive use of trade picks to get star players ......there's the sugar hit of getting them ....then there's the long-term consequences of using so much capital

CARL used an irresponsible number of Draft Picks to work their way up the Draft Board to get Jagga Smith ..... I get it, if you have all the other puzzle pieces in play .....but CARL haven't

Because for some teams it works. Collingwood has used 2 top 15 draft picks (Quaynor / Daicos) since 2018 and they have had sustained success.

PORT have made a poor calculation of where their list sits .....and in 2 years have added more list cloggers to a list already containing cloggers

They didn't make a poor calculation. No club in their right mind would blow up a top 4 list.

They have an absolutely elite midfield. Last offseason they had made the top 4 in 4 out of their last 5 seasons.

Port demonstrate a 'trade-in' philosophy over development. The reality is the JHF trade cost them huge at the draft table and they tried to short cut it. But Port have been serial operators at the trade table for awhile prior to that, often sacrificing the draft. They self sabotaged through mismanagement and a desire to buy a premiership rather than earning it. Probably because Geelong, Richmond and Hawthorn all managed to achieve this.

They have an elite midfield now but honestly the rest of the side is not great. A fit and firing midfield though will likely see them push for top 8, but they cant be expected to win against the best teams. They wont beat us.

Agreed. You’re only as good as your bottom 6 players and theirs are pretty poor

It's the opposite. You are only as elite as your most elite players.

Its no surprise that Brisbanes top poll getters in the Norm Smith voting were all top 10 in their B&F.

You can carry some pretty average footballers as long as your top end producers at their elite level.
