AFL Player 7: Indefatigable Zach Merrett

Those players have to want to come to Essendon too though. If you were a best-23 player for the Hawks, why would you want to move to Essendon? Or to any side not playing finals, really.

why wouldn't you want to move to a club that has made no effort to recruit you?

the player argument goes both ways, we didn't need the Hawks permission to try to poach one of their players. we just weren't interested in doing so because we didn't want to trade Merrett.

No they don’t it’s called a 3 team trade
The post you quoted replied to a post saying that Essendon wanted a player, not just picks. I guess Hawthorn could have got on board to help the Fiorini trade (or similar), but you still need to be a desirable place to attact the player, wherever they come from.

It doesn't matter. The simple fact is the Hawks where not giving up a Weddle quality player and picks and we were really not interested in trading unless they offered us the Sun, the Moons and most of the stars. Both sides where never going to get close.

That Zac’s an idiot comes to mind

Edit: on second look it’s not as bad as it first seemed. Just reminds me of my father in laws team where he loads up on value premiums that are that step below the top ones because they are value and always runs out of trades. Because in a trade limited format you can’t swap out every player.

Also quite a few High risk players and generally that many unique players isn’t the best idea. A notable player from a few years back (think it was SuperCoach Mama) said on a podcast that they dislike going too unique because your basically gambling that your smarter then whoever doesn’t have them and the top 10% of players (10% ownership) are pretty smart and it’s very arrogant to go against that.

Had he not pulled that move last year, or gone about it in a professional and respectful manner, sure, I can understand the contract offer. But the heel turn in the space of 3 months seems a bit rich.

Play out this year at a minimum and then we’ll talk extension. We’re not setting the precedent that moves like this get rewarded

To be fair, Cena’s heel turn was worse.
