He was one of the few players that came over to the boundary at the end of the session yesterday to spend time chatting to the faithful, signing autographs, doing photo selfies etc etc.

Seems like a confident young man listening to him. His listed height varies from 194 to 197cm depending on which website you venture onto, but when he was standing next to Lewy Young on the boundary, seems closer to the 194cm mark, similar to that turd who went to the Swans.

Either way, gets my thumbs up if we do take him :thumbsu:
Very good person indeed. Meet him a few times on the Murray when his been away

Poor list management because we didn’t get a tried and tested second or third tall defender when we have 2 that - while being young - have been earmarked as the future? Good luck getting a deal done without paying through the roof, while not potentially stifling the development of HOF and Dean

I understand the argument you are making and your points about the future are very fair but I’m also pretty positive the way our list is currently structured we are going to be horribly exposed for height and strength down back during games this year.

It’s pretty clear to me from Austin’s time at Carlton and the Dogs he believes hybrid defenders is the way to go. I think that view might have been fair at some stage over the past 10 years but for where the game is at currently, it is not.

Should never have let him go. Elite runner and good skills. Will end up securing a spot at the dogs with Luke Power there.
Should've payed out Fog instead.
Really could have foregone the Motlop extension that was both overs for 2yrs and lucky to get renewed.

Edit: Fog looks like being in the 1’s (also surprisingly)

We don't really have any small forwards available now. Motlop injured. Williams is moving into defence. Who's the small forward who will apply pressure? The modern game relies on small quick dynamic players. Fog is average and struggles to kick 30 metres and isn't quick. Not counting Bryne as he's a first year player. Evans is more a half forward.
We've lost Durdin, (Williams into defence) and now Motlop.
Cupboard is very thin.
The more I think about it. We seem to have lots of flankers and wingers on our list. Reminds me of when Dudoro was in charge of Essendons list.

I like White, gave his all and had some smarts.

But he's lacks a point of difference as a small forward. Even as an endurance athlete you'd prefer Cottrell.

He can play at AFL level, but would always have been a depth player

It’s on every forward to apply pressure. Byrne could still be an option, 1st year position that can impact. Jeffy did back in the day and players do so in current times.

Evans, EH, Ainsworth, F.Young, Cotters **edit add Fogarty
Hayward, Moir and Kemp, McGovern more FF
Byrne
Ison

ZW (potential) change was unexpected, as he was looking like one of the 1st picked up forward.

Jeffy was a mature age pick up.

I think 21/2?

Cotters isn't a small forward and he's Injured.

I don't think Flynn Young is a small pressure forward either.

IMO Will White offered something different to all the others.

Cotters is a HFF but classed as a small vs a medium.
They play forward and they have to apply pressure as part of the role.

Same goes for the talls. H will chase/tackle, whereas Charlie was another case. Kempy will be expected to follow H’s pressure.

Will White is not AFL standard. He got some games and rarely performed. Lucky we had a lot of injuries.

We need to move on from forwards who are good at applying pressure to forwards who kick goals.

Players zone and run off you when they know you're not a threat.

I don't think it's hard to tell players to chase. It's all in the mind and if they don't want to do it, that's what the reserves are for.

Byrne Ainsworth Evans Young Fogarty is enough on a list

Williams will still go forward at times

And we have been doing a lot of training with our mids rotating as small forwards.

They just have to perform and be part of good game plan/structure

So with Derksen coming in to train, are we looking at both Elijah and Derksen possibly getting two spots (and someone going on LTI list) or are they fighting for one spot?

If one spot, makes you wonder how confident they are in Elijah if they are bringing in a new competitor with just 2 weeks to go till decision deadline.

Currently they are fighting for one spot. We haven't yet moved Motlop to the LTI. If we do there's a second spot.

Elijah has a spot sewn up realistically. They are just keeping him on edge and also being smart and waiting to the deadline as you never know what injuries may occur between now and then. The fact they let White walk and made Derksen an official train on shows they see a tall player clearly as a need.

IMO we will open the second spot and take Derksen. With Haynes missing early rounds and his age going against him, Gov being notoriously injury prone, Weitering being sore and possibly missing early, O'Farrell being out basically 3/4 of the year, and Dean having never played a game before.. it just makes sense to get some insurance in. Gov and Haynes probably won't be on the list next year so it would be prudent to get in early and get a guy in who can learn the game plan rather than wait to the end of the year and have to find a couple of replacements.

It’s irresponsible list management to go into the season undermanned when there’s a very valid opportunity to list another player to cover our deficiencies.

The w/end was an eye-opener (that has been well forecast) on the delicate position we’re in on our reliance on 1 x key defender & 1 x key forward to remain fit for the entirety of the season.

Don’t think SSP can play in the pre-season games to have a look at the coal face
That's exactly what they can do in the first week of organised match simulations between clubs.

Derksen will play on Wednesday.

I see Dougie Cochran has knee tendinitis and will miss at least the early part of the season, interestingly because he’s in Ports academy they will be handling his injury recovery at their club, so it’s very likely they get him to put the cue in the rack for a large part of the season to try and get him to fall a few spots in the draft.

Disappointing to hear Williams is training with the backs.

Think Hayward, Kemp, Moir (and Ainsworth to a slightly lesser extent) play too similarly. We still lack a genuine X factor goal sneak even more so now that Motlop went down.

Between Newman, Saad, Cowan, Hollands, Florent, Wilson, Carroll, Boyd and Charleson, surely we have enough run and carry down there. Haynes, Dean and Gov are hybrids who can move the ball quickly.

Seems a huge waste imo. Could kick 35+ goals if he gets going.
Have to also look at it from a list management perspective.

Zac is going into the last year of his contract and if he doesn’t perform, we would then most likely see him gone at the end of the year.

We invested heavily into our front half with medium and small types that we expect to have at the club well beyond 2026.

Williams has played his best football in the backline and I know if I was going into a contract year I’d want to play in an area I have played my best football in.

Yes, Williams has looked decent up forward at times but I personally think he is needed back more than forward. Especially going into his final year of a handsomely paid contract.

Also need to remember that Newman is coming off a year without playing and is getting on, plus Saad at times looked like age was catching him last year. These 2 could be done at the end of 2026.
