Seeing how much Anderson won by in the end it would have been a lot more interesting if Karlsson didn't withdraw and if Slind didn't encounter early race issues.

Karlsson was so dominant in the earlier skiing event that she likely would have beaten Anderson.
Maybe. Andersson looked like she had one of those days where she was just in perfect condition. Agree though that the field ended up being weakened considerably by the pre and in race withdrawals.

So what were everybody's favourite moments?

Josie Baff was my pick of the Australians

Loved the comeback and world record in the free skate from the japanese pair too

Apart from the Aussies (especially Baff) it had to be Klaebo climbing the hills at the end of races.

I think biathlon is the best sport to watch out of all sports in the games. I'd find it hard to watch if any Australians were competitive though. Far too stressful!

Canada did not have a good games.

Not as bad as Finland. Cannot believe they didn't win a gold medal.
Must be a blow to their national identities. Imagine living six months a year in the dark, under twenty foot of snow. And you get beaten at the Winter Olympics by Aussie kids from the northern beaches of Sydney.

Imagine if we started getting beaten at surf lifesaving by Scandinavians, there’d be a royal commission.

Fantastic Games, been some wonderful moments

For the Australians Josie Baff and Jakara Anthony my favourite

However on a Olympics level the mens 50k gold by King Klaebo is by far and away the moment of the games it's not even close for me, doubt we see anyone go close to 6 golds at a single games again. It's like a swimmer getting gold in the 50, 100,200, 400, and 1500m at the same games, just the thought of that jeez.

Loved Germany winning my blue ribbon event in the 4 man Bobsled.

Yep, was a real shock.

Switzerland getting bronze was good, that was a small shock. Germany are so good in that event. Similarly Swedend and Norway in the cross country. Can appreciate greatness in events.

Canada did not have a good games.
They still won 20+ medals which puts them in the top 10 on that criteria.

They were predicted to win 8 gold, they won 5. They didn't convert a few expected to win. The tie breaker between Kingsbury and Woods in the Moguls didn't help.

Win the Hockey and they finish 8th on the medal tally sorted by gold then silver then bronze.

Losing the Hockey gold when they dominated shots on goal this morning would have hurt a hell of a lot more, than not making the top 10 on the medal tally.

With the yanks winning the two Ice Hockey golds, then if I have done my sums correctly, 65 individuals in their team squad of 236, are going home with at least 1 gold medal (27.5%) and 86 of 236 athletes are taking home at least 1 medal (36.4%).

7 individuals won 8 golds and 4 teams won golds.

Speed Skater Jordan Stolz is going home with 2 gold medals as is figure skater Alysua Liu, who won the women's single event and was part of the Team event that won gold. So that is 67 gold medals those 65 individuals won.

2 years ago I stupidly kept daily track of the Paris games of all medals won by all nations ie winning gold in men's basketball was counted as 12 gold medals not 1 gold medal. At the end of the games I worked out how many individuals took home medals for 4 countries.

The Dutch dominated with 61 of their 258 athletes took home a gold medal (23.6%) - one cyclist Harrie Lavreysen took home 3, and 105 of 258 took home a medal (40.7%). The USA had 110 of 592 athletes take home a gold medal (18.6%) and 250 of 592 (42.2%) took home a medal.

Norway only had 80 individuals attend Milano. They won several team skiing events so whilst the medal tally says they won 18 gold medals, 17 individuals in their team squad of 80, are going home with at least 1 gold medal (21.3%) and between those 17, they are taking home 26 gold medals lead by King Klaebo with 6.

31 of the 80 Norwegians who attended Milano, are taking home at least 1 medal (38.8%).

A lot easier to do this for total medals handed out for the Winter Games than the Summer Games and with the help of the official website of Milano-Cortina, unlike Paris, allowed you to search all individual medallists by each nations.

Ice Hockey medals had a huge impact with 25 men and 23 women able to win medals and next biggest team sport was Curling with 5 people. But many sports had team events and the Figure Skating team event had the most with 7 people and several sports had 5 people team events.

At the Paris Games there were 8 team sports from 3x3 Basketball with 4 people per team, to Football which had up to 22 people per team as replacements players are possible due to injury, and they also get a medal. Those 8 sports hand out approx 112 gold and silver and bronze medals.

Then there are team events in sports like Mixed Team Judo event has 14 athletes receive medals per nation, the Rowing Eights have 9 as the cox also gets a medal and athletics and swimming relay events, up to 8 medals per nation depending on how many heat runners and swimmers respectively a nation uses that don't participate in the final.

What I tried to do in this table and the one I did for Paris, was work out how many individuals in each national team are going home with at least 1 gold or at least 1 medal. This was easy to do for all nations at Milano but for Paris whilst I calculated total medals handed out to each nation I only did the individuals calculation for a handful of nations.

The Dutch have done very well in both Paris and Milano games. In Milano they didn't win a medal in Ice Hockey and in Paris won several team sport gold and minor medals. I posted the total medals handed out in Paris table - HERE and did the Netherlands v USA individual medallists calculation HERE and Oz v NZ calculation the next post.
