Still a little scrappy in our finishing at times but generally with the right intent to move the ball with real meaning.
Loved the Lij chip the chesser for his goal.
Walsh little give to Byrne.
There just seems a real willingness to look for the best team oriented option.
And Lord was so tough.
Looking forward to at least something new this year. Go blues.

We had 100 more possessions and IMO, still wasted too many going inside 50. Just need to reduce the kicking long to a contest. Harry will get better, but he will be triple teamed. We need to keep working on having the alternative options wider and higher.

Another 120 mins or so under the belt and a win with no key injuries is absolutely as good as you could have wanted coming from tonight and also last week.

A lot of positives. Derksen moves very well and stakes a claim to play next week, thought he contested fantastically all night and his physicality to make impact on the contest was impressive.
Ollie Hollands looks at home back on a wing as does ZW at HB. I think Ollie provides great run and spread and his disposal has improved.

Jagga has immense talent and can be anything for this midfield, I look forward to seeing him impact games as we go forward. It’s his ability in traffic to change direction and hit the 20-25m pass that lit my eyes up, along with his run. Praise to Walsh after Q1 as well, huge, his goal was chefs kiss. In fact, loved our whole midfield performance for the most part.

You can see what Hayward and Ainsworth bring to our system too. We missed some golden opportunities entering F50 with our entries but I feel this will happen as it irons out and the boys become more accustomed to not just bombing it or needing to be quicker in delivery and decision. Not fussed atm.
Q1 and Q4 really highlighted some great chains and link up play between the arcs, we looked different in the best way possible.

I really hope we can somehow stun some people next week, the vibe of the group looks and feels different and I hope our off season has been the causation of that. It’s been well noted of the poor mentality of players on game day and lack of belief or self efficacy in past years. I hope there’s been a shift. Bring on next week!

Ollie Hollands learned how to kick. Also looks stronger. Wing is his spot.
He's gotten better every year and gone up a level again. Don't get the angst, he's on an excellent trajectory.

Boyd’s kicking will be an asset with this new game style, can hit targets quickly at distance which really helps us change angles quickly. Has he done enough? Might ultimately need to displace Saad.
Carroll.

mmm, I got to say a lot of the players I'm not a fan of did well. And i did think there was heat in the match. Young and Mcgovern did well enough except for some kicking issues at times. Young also did a great kick too. And directed traffic.

How do we line young up given every coaching group has overlooked him for anyone else available. And they even tried to sell him/his contract off but no takers. Will get his chance for sure and looked comfortable today against those tall fwds the cats put out. And also Brissy put out.

Derkson did himself no harm. Another who no one wanted.

I dont like Moir much but he did well enough. I think E Holland is weak in the legs and terribly slow but he also did well late.

Like i said, a lot of players im less of a fan of did well in this praccy game. Kemp did enough too.

There are loads of players i like who did well. Jagga for the softest of soft kicks inside 50. Literally nothing to do with gameplan, simply to do with list mgmt picking someone who can be part of a chain and execute a soft kick to allow the marker every opportunity. Matches an inside 50 specialist like Grien Miers for sure and transforms our image instantly from clunky to more elegant. Jagga just needs to avoid collisions with Dangerfield body types and its all good.

I really like Lord as well but then shouldnt have recruited B Campo but i get the pressure they faced on potentially about-turning that decision. He is AFL smart as against his rl persona.

I like Z Williams back for his diagonal running and did some nice defensive acts that everyone says he doesnt have. Not every kick came off but he trusts his own kicking ability instinctively unlike others.

Pitto also good and not a fav of mine. Hasnt played against anyone yet though and he is weaker vs the other potatoe ruck bodies that are stronger than his (GC ruck/Darcy etc) or not tall enough for Gawn types.

Liked the game. Hewett again does everything well.

Beware of drawing excitement from practice games...

Why?

It's not like we beat GWS by 10 goals then lost to Richmond 2 weeks later last season.

Results of practice matches are definitely irrelevant but seeing individuals fitness levels (e.g. Walsh) are definitely relevant. And performances like Jagga's tonight - you can't play that down - practice match or not.

Also - winning still way better than losing.

Cooper Lord. 11 tackles. Cerra replacement found
Just wanted to touch on this, and while the final count wound up being 13, I think it's important that it's taken in context.

Lord had 6 contested possessions, 3 ground ball gets, 3 clearances, and 28 pressure acts, and zero frees awarded.

He was basically second to the ball a lot and locked it in. Yeah sure, not everyone's going to be a matchwinner, but he's not winning his own ball, and he's not chasing anyone down properly.

He should not be our first choice right now, and needs to continue to work on his mobility within - and read of - the game.

No he's not done enough, still the same issues despite looking a hair more mobile. Team has to play through him for him to be useful, otherwise a dour stopper.

Overwhelmingly more likely to use space others have created rather than being able to create his own, and far too often that includes his kicking.

He can easily become out Tom Atkins type

Cooper’s game was massive tonight

Id be using Harry as a decoy.

I agree.
It's coming along nicely.

Geelong only missing Smith, Miers, Cameron and Danger only played a qtr. Us Weiters of that class. Carlton will be pushing for early season wins so assume we are ahead fitness wise.

Hope these two games werent poor indicators.

Typical Geelong. Their tactic against us is to try to release Stewart as much as possible and then put enough pressure on the ball to force a long shallow bomb forward from our midfield. Harry ends up in 1 on 2 or 3 situations mostly. He got hit up on a lead twice I think for the game and missed both kicks.

I didn't think Kemp played all that well but kicking 2 goals should give him a bit of confidence. He's been out a long while so he's got time to work back to top level.
