Good Luck Have Fun Don't Die

Not saying too much as it's better to go into blind not knowing much about it.

Suffers from messy execution in the 2nd and final acts, but performances of Temple, Richardson and Rockwell were great and paper over it.

Enjoy quirky movies like this, Interstate 60 and Bugonia that aren't fully mainstream and try something a bit different.

7/10.

Goodfellas

It's not the first time I've seen it, it's one of my favourite films but sometimes you forget how good the soundtrack is.

All of Scorsese's mob films have incredible soundtracks, even going as far back as Mean Streets.

The Evil Dead

Flat first half, decent second half. I wonder if they shot sequentially because it felt like Raimi's and Campbell's confidence grew as the film went on. Or maybe Raimi's signature style only came "online" once the magic in the world was fully unleashed. 5/10.

Keen to see Evil Dead II, because I know it's better.

Eurotrip (2004)
First time watching since 2004, nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be, for a dumb sex comedy it's fun and it knows what it is.
I've been singing "Scottie doesn't know all day" today 😂.

I just read that the Amsterdam sex club scene was originally scripted for the character to have mistaken the Anne Frank House for a secret sex club, with accidental nudity, surprised tourists and an Anne Frank mannequin all getting involved.

Bloody love Sam Rockwell.

Godzilla Minus One (2023, SBS) -

Godzilla goes smashy smashy.
Looks incredible for it's budget, got to be in the running for the best ratio of SFX to budget at least in the modern era. Interesting setting of post war Japan. I thought Godzilla in the 2014 iteration was a bit of a cutie lol and he doesn't disappoint here also. The ending (you'd have to be a moron not to know exactly how it'll go such is how obvious it's setup is) takes the wind out of the sails a bit unfortunately. 7/10. Keen for the sequel coming out late this year though.

The Piano Teacher (2001, SBS) -

A piano teacher has "issues".
Kinda hesitant to say I watched this as woah boy this was depraved and deranged and compelling. Incredible performance from Isabelle Huppert who I'd never heard of before and will have to see if she's done other renowned work. Wasn't surprised to find out retrospectively that this was by the director of recently watched The White Ribbon. I was completely locked into this albeit mostly in horror. 9/10. Only blemish was I didn't completely buy the male lead's character "development" in the penultimate scene. In a weird way wish I watched this with a loved one.

Going to have to watch some lighter stuff this week!

She was doing a performance of Mary Queen of the Scots at the Adelaide Festival that I think just wrapped. She’s incredibly prolific and celebrated, I’d think of her as being akin to France’s Meryl Streep in many ways. The Piano Teacher or Elle would probably be her best performance, I’d say.

…wow.

But yeah, it’s top tier Haneke for me, along with The White Ribbon and Caché. It’s definitely confronting and she’s giving an all time great performance.

Irreversible time!

It is better, even though it's basically a remake of the first one with black comedy thrown in. Raimi and Campbell were much better at what they did six years later, and it shows.

I read Bruce Campbell's autobiography a few years back and he covers the making of the original Evil Dead. IIRC it was shot random scene by random scene, based on who/what was available on the day. Raimi and Joel Coen then edited it together.

I only just found out the scenes with Willem Dafoe were shot in triplicate, where he played the role as if he knew Bateman was guilty, innocent or just suspicious.

During editing a combination of the three were used to confuse and unsettle the audience.
There you go, I never knew that.

Certainly makes sense though when you watch those scenes.

Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die... Sam Rockwell plays an eccentric man who shows up in a diner saying he's from the future and needs to find the right people to save the world. To say more might spoil the movie, but it's a quirky sci-fi action comedy with a good cast (Michael Pena, Juno Temple, Hayely Lu Richardson) directed by Gore Verbinski. It doesn't go in the direction I thought it would go, with a little bit of Black Mirror energy mixed in, which does make it tonally inconsistent at times. The end will be quite divisive, I imagine, but I rolled with it. Rockwell is always great and carries this to a fun film. 7/10.

I think chalamet and wagner moura were the best two lead actor performances of the nominations (i reckon both movies wouldnt be as successful without them carrying the film) but i aint mad at MBJ winning.
Big Wallace from The Wire fan (the first tragic character arc of many across the five seasons) and I ****ing love Creed so have been rooting for him for years.
He lost his way for a bit but thought he was back to his charismatic best in Sinners, dont think the film is perfect but he proved he is the movie star I always thought he could be.

Also big fan of the Amy Madigan win for Weapons!

Chalamet really tried too hard - see Bradley Cooper- to win. He wasn’t as good as Jordan, Di Caprio or Hawke.

Chalamet will get his chance.

I'm in the group that rates Sinners very highly, and Michael B Jordan is great in it, but I still don't think he was better than Chalamet or DiCaprio (haven't seen Hawke's performance).
