Sucked to see Gulden go down, hope that doesn't impact his season too badly. I know they're more likely to dislocate again once it's occurred.

Annoying he's potentially had two seasons disrupted by impact injuries when he's been so consistent with his body otherwise.

Think Michael Gleeson of the Age has a good solution…

“It is possible to have the benefits of opening round fairly. Give the four northern states teams the first window of the season to promote the game, but then have every other team play after that. The window of exclusivity would still exist, giving the expansion-market teams the precious prime TV real estate of season openers, but there is no reason the rest of the competition cannot play in the days afterwards.

The AFL has already broken the seal – opening round is no longer exclusively for games in NSW and Queensland because St Kilda were gifted an exclusive home game at the MCG last weekend.

Is it just coincidence that the loudest critic of northern academies and AFL assistance to the expansion teams, Andrew Bassat, is president of the Saints, the team given the only home game in Melbourne that weekend?

If the AFL is going to play one match at the MCG on the Sunday night of opening round, why would it not play a game on the Labour Day public holiday Monday? That is an opportunity lost.

The season should open with games in the northern states on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights and Saturday afternoon, which is a preferred local timeslot in Sydney. The remaining games can be played after that on the Saturday night, Sunday and the public holiday.

It would not dilute the marketing advantage of showcasing games in the expansion markets and would not shutout fans of the other teams, who are presently being given the clear message that the AFL takes them for granted.”
I feel like this will be the common sense solution.

I read yesterday on the Carlton board that the rumour is it could be 3-4 months for Gulden. Of course nothing has been confirmed yet.

It would be a shame if he is injured for most of the year, he’s one of the better players in the competition to watch.

I guess it'd be like the Kings Birthday game, put in two Vic teams.

We get that off as a PH too though.

This and Melbourne Cup are the only two that I think NSW doesn't get so are the only two that the whole country doesn't have off. (Plus GF Parade I guess but we get one a week later).

Yeah that's beyond frustrating. It's one thing if it's soft tissue and it's his body letting him down but this is just purely bad luck.

Hate seeing the best players in the comp missing games.

And then laugh reacts when he realises he has no other come back and that he undermined his own point.
Some do research to back up what they see or the hunch they have.
Others rely on feelpinions they can't support.

No guess needed to which group the edgelord slayer lands in.

It matches in with the SA Adelaide Cup day holiday also.

to me and i have nothing to prove it other than my feeling is that at this stage giving exclusivity to northern states just feels almost patronising. the sydney swans has existed as a brand for what 40 plus years, is extremely highly regarded and have had premiership success and some of the biggest stars play for them over the last 20-25 years. brisbane much the same.

I could understand it if they did something crazy for gws and gold coast as the newest sides, and the whole vegas thing for the nrl is just that. it just feels like round zero is just a like 'here, shut up' kind of thing instead of actually being something.

The AFL will now work closer with home-game clubs when it comes to declaring fully-ticketed matches.
Fan fury has erupted over the practice, which sees paid-up members having to fork out more money to reserve seats in anticipated high-demand games.

The St Kilda-Collingwood opening round match and the Round 1 Carlton-Richmond and Essendon-Hawthorn games were declared fully-ticketed. But the Saints game didn’t get to 83,000, while the two Round 1 games fell short of 75,000 and below forecasts.
The first complete round of the season saw attendances fall nearly 47,000 short on last year, with fully-ticketed games and cost-of-living pressures blamed for the drop-off.

But there will be no fully-ticketed matches across Rounds 2 and 3, before the Good Friday meeting between North Melbourne and Carlton at Marvel Stadium on April 3. Some fans have stated that paying as much as $70 on top of annual membership fees for a reserved seat was keeping them away.

The declaration of fully-ticketed games has historically been the responsibility of the hosting club in matches where the projected attendance is set to exceed membership seating capacity.
But the AFL will now work in concert with that club in an attempt to better predict whether the game truly meets that requirement.

While general admission costs remain frozen for the eighth year in a row, AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon said the league was conscious of the concerns.
“It’s something we’re acutely aware of and we work with our clubs and venues to make sure our game can remain affordable and accessible,” Dillon told SEN on Saturday.

“As we stand here now it is tough for people and it’s certainly at the front of our mind."

It's a rort. Same happens at the SCG. Pay a huge fee for membership but then to get a reserved seat you have to pay a chunk on top of that. I don't mind too much sitting on Level 1 but the fact the second level is basically entirely reserved is shit.

Never happens in Geelong* but does for the MCG which always baffles me. What is my near $700 reserved seat membership paying for if not to reserve a specific seat. Paying extra is exactly that, a rort.

*However, this is egregious.

Top level Selwood stand nearing $100. No wonder the place wasn't full last week. Who's going to pay that money when we're all feeling a very large pinch just putting petrol in the car.

Ok so I thought this was just members without the reserved seat membership, but you're saying at the G even though your membership card shows what seat is "yours" for the season you still have to fork out extra? If thats the case then yeah thats ****ed.

Used to be spotty. Some games would be okay others would be asked to pay extra to attend.

From last year we went down to 1 MCG home game so now we don't have the MCG reserved seats included in the membership and have to buy a ticket... Yet the membership price didn't go down but went up.

So the Collingwood game this year will cost extra.

Having to pay more for tickets after already paying for a membership is outrageous.

At least with the NRL for games that are expected to reach capacity at the SFS as an unreserved member you are given a period to redeem a free reserved seat in what would normally be the GA section. After that period that section opens up for the general public to purchase but you can still redeem a seat until it sells out without charge.

Surely clubs don’t need to fleece members twice by charging extra on top.
