From everything I've seen, Wilson's an outstanding athlete but just an okay footballer.

On the wings, we have Simpkin and Stephens, who are more than fine, Scott, who is okay as depth, and of course FOS too.

Half forwards we're even more stocked in.

Sentimentality of BFNAAK aside, I think it'd be a poor use of draft picks to pay much more than a third rounder for a winger/flanker surplus to needs.

Only caveat would be if the club thinks Jy genuinely wants to leave and we can unexpectedly get overs for him.

Could he play hb? He's certainly a dasher.

Our wings are set for now. Simpkin and Stephens are about as good as any clubs wingmen duo - noting it’s not a super talented position league wide - but they seem to do their job well. Scott has looked very good in the VFL matches I’ve seen this preseason and adds handy depth if one of them were to drop off. Then George / Duursma are being developed to at least get some rotational minutes there.

I’ll call it now without any inside knowledge but at most I could only see us picking up Lachy Sholl as a free agent come years end to be a back-up wingman.

Elite runner but his either kicking or decision making is a worry

There’s advanced stats for decision making and advanced kicking metrics now.

Expected retention, retention per kick, threat rating annd threat per kick etc.

Technically he’s a better kick and user than Sheezel based on 2025.

On average he takes harder options and they result in retention by his team mates at a higher rate than Sheezel, they also result on more damage and scoring opportunity on average.

Neither of them are particularly good btw. But it’s a point of reference.

Under these metrics Rob Hansen is by far our best user by foot and Kallan Dawson, Fisher and Pink were our worst for those with plenty of games

Sheezel and Parker were the worst users by foot for top players last year.

Bobby Hill was 20% more damaging than any other player in the AFL by foot last year through his decision making and execution.

McKercher who gets grief, Wardlaw also, were rated much higher than Sheezel

While it’s fresh in everyone’s minds, this system had it as follows against Port for open field kicking and decision making/total damage:

1. Curtis (one of the best AFL wide for the round - He had a 43% kicking efficiency, that is why that stat is a flawed one)
2. Darling
3. McKercher
4. Parker
5. Simpkin
6. Stephens
7. LDU

Simpkin and LDU used it far above their typical averages. Parker went from one of our worst users by foot last year to one of our best in this game

Our worst were

1. Dovaston
2. Pink
3. Logue
4. Sheezel

However Dovastons threat and difficulty per kick was much higher per disposal than the other 4. I.e long kicks, deep forward, with low % of retention but high outcome.

I’m not certain that Walter is a sure thing to leave. Ben King has long been linked to Collingwood and I could easily see that happening. In the even that King comes back to Vic then Walter stays on the GC.

He also has links back to WA, having originally grown up there

I'd happily just cause shit by offering $1.17m x8. **** it. Make other teams pay more.

Id throw some money at Zac Bailey and make him choose between us and Essendon
I mentioned him a while ago, why not? We don't have too many of his type. He can play rover/small forward as good as anyone.

How could a thinking person actually choose Essington over North? That's not going to happen for a long time.

Less bullshit, less pressure v no Anzac, bit more travel. Whatevs ~$28k a week is still ~$28k a week ****ing.

“I grew up as a North supporter. My great uncle, Mick Nolan, played for North so my family are massive supporters of North Melbourne,” the 18-year-old said further.

“Growing up I didn’t get much of a choice, but (it was) North at the end of the day.

“I’m not as tall as Mick, or wide, but he was a pretty good player in his day.”

Should I have a chat to his gran ma at her upcoming 80th.

Scotts out of contract though. I'd be surprised if he's kept on.
Then you have the caveat that you also mentioned about Jy. Wouldn't necessarily rule out interest in wingers just yet

With that kicking action, I recon Clarko has already put a line through his name.
He was an exciting 'concept' in his draft year but looks like there are a lot of question marks still.

He'd command a 1st rounder on sunk.cost but it'd be quite a risk at that price.

His 2025 highlights are almost entirely free kicks. Quite strange viewing.

See if this is more your jam

FWIW I think Walter's perhaps unperformed because Hardwick doesn't seem to know how to integrate him into a forward line where King and Long are well-established as the two main tall threats.

He's only 20 years old. Roughly same age of Dawson and Goad. Can't expect every key forward to hit the ground running like Cooper Trembath.

Assuming he gets only half a season's worth of gametime this year, I reckon acquiring him for a late teens pick would be very savvy recruitment.

I had a day dream this morning Trembath and Walter in our forward line in 18 months time, two genuine marking threats with Larkey playing third man up.
Then was grounded by that video, he looks a long way off it still. Although that mark on on Sicily half way through was genuinely impressive, one step to above his head, thats Maj type athleticism, add the aggression and its still an intriguing prospect.
wouldn't be surprised if he has a Jesse Hogan type career(for different reasons of course) but that great white hope, to bust, until he lands at the right place and everyone rants about why their club didn't pick him.

Just thinking of some recent acquisitions and IF they became senior mainstays how that adjusts our list profile in terms of patching up age gap deficits.

2020 draft
Tom Powell
+Tom Blamires

2021 draft
Paul Curtis
Josh Goater
Jackson Archer
+Zac Banch

2023 draft
Colby McKercher
Zane Duursma
Taylor Goad
Wil Dawson
Riley Hardeman
+Cooper Trembath
+Lachy Brewer

Saints ITK is interesting reading, a few of them think we’ve had the claws in for a while with him. and think this could be more likely, than unlikely.

Particularly as there’s been a contract in front of him for 12 months.

Barrett also first raised our interest 9-12 months ago apparently, which I had forgotten.
