hahaha some of you are genuinely horrible. I highly doubt they do, but I hope none of the kids in this team come here to see what people are saying about them.

Is it impossible to witness a poor play without it ruining your day?

Allan was fairly good early but his second half was pretty awful.

Swadling looks one touch, but isn’t quite up with the speed of VFL yet. He’ll get better the more he plays.

Hayes did some really nice things, weights passes well an knows how to find a goal.

Reef was impressive, we desperately missed him after he went off.

West looks too good for the VFL now. Probably needs to get a bit more selfish tbh, he’s such a good kick for goal.

One of the commentators said we have 17 AFL listed players today, and they have only 8.That says quite a bit about our depth. And what it says is it’s not good,
We don't have depth but you don't get it. 19 year old AFL listed kids are often not yet as good as mature VFL players. They're drafted for potential from junior footy - not because they're good VFL players yet.

yea i have been a believer in Allen, but thats 3-4 poor efforts in 5 minutes..

he is just not a footy player.
Yes, he is. If Dan McStay is a footy player then so is Ed and I happen to believe they both are. Non footballers don't gather a pill with an opponent hot on their heels, burn them off while having a casual bounce and then hit a target as Ed did in our last clash. It's using his obvious skill and athleticism more often in games which is the issue. Could not the same be said of Dan McStay who gets named week in week out when fit for very little output in most games?

I reckon West is the only one right now I’d promote tbh….

I think its fairly predictable that a midfield team based on 18 year olds is going to take some time to gel. First game, very tough conditions.

I liked Swadling's talent of going to where the ball will be, and West competed well when he had half a chance. Ditto Howes. McCarthy seems to be clean and smart for a tall. I thought Jiath looked a cut above, despite making some errors which are inevitable given he's fairly risk-on.

Decent signs but it's going to take time to gel.

Disappointing loss in the end. Tale of our good looked very good. Bad looked very bad.. they converted in their purple patches. We missed shots. Proved the difference.

Forwards looked good when we got the ball there or gave them opportunities.

Of those who are IMO could earn call ups (when fit)

West, Reef, HH and Anderson could play a role

Hayes getting closer had a good second half.

Tj competed hard all day, some mistakes but he’s improving

Allan got a lot of the ball but again his disposal/decision making lets him down. I never look at possession counts. Midfield depth still a concern given he’s probably next in with injuries

Cochran turned it over by hand and I didn’t see anything aerially to suggest he’s ready to step up as a KPD.

I wouldn’t take much notice about the number of AFL listed players. 2 of ours played limited minutes in HH and reef and 5 of those are first year players in swaddling, Anderson, printable McCarthy and saxena

We did look noticeably weaker once reef and HH went off

I’m glass half full on this one.

1. Missing a few handy VFL players… Phillips, Ford
2. Fairly young line up without veterans and as much senior age AFL depth across every line as in other years
3. Wind made the conditions tricky at times

Granted all that giants were young and got a good win on the road

But overall I think the VFL pies will be playing finals this year

The problem with VFL is it is not really a legit comp, if we were serious about the win then Reef and HH would have played on, some positional decsions would have been different. Maybe we would have played some mature non listed players etc. I liked TJ's game, Swadling, Howes, Hayes,West,Anderson, McCarthy all look pretty good to me.

I feel it’s more Development over Results

True… but this compromise helps with equalisation with the lesser resourced standalone clubs

That being said if I had my way… there would be a national reserves comp, and a VFL/VFA or new independent comp of the AFL…a premier tier comp for the standalone clubs and other top metro teams with solid backing and maybe a broadcast deal with ABC or Stan or something

VIC cricket successfully does this format

Cricket is going broke

Disregarding the early call on Saxena, I thought he found his way into the game. Not great, not outstanding, but also not lost out there. On ok first run for us.

Re Swadling and Prindable - I liked more of what I saw from them in one game than I’ve seen from HDM in three years.

West we know about, but McCarthy also looks like (taking a deep breath) a developing tall forward. Hard to believe, I know, but he was definitely out there today wearing black and white stripes.

Agreed… but needs a high ceiling to justify ignoring young Mcguane with that pick

Is it possible that swadling and/or Anderson can crack the seniors team after the mid season bye?

How did printable look? What is the one main the he needs to work on to be ready for senior football?

Of the new draftees, I was most impressed with Zac McCarthy. I didn't see him panic or make bad decisions.
He's clean with the ball.
Swadling got the ball a lot but he also had more than a few turnovers as well as some hospital passes.
Yes, I think he's going to be good but it will take some time.
I also think JB had a really good game.

Based on one game, I’d have Gus ahead of Swadling ahead of Prindable.

But that order could change after the next game.

Gus being older and more experienced could probably play seniors now, if there’s a spot.

The other two may be seen later in the season, but again this could change quickly depending on their development.

positives - McInnes looked great for the limited time he was on ground, shame he only had the 1st qtr
Swadling will be a player, finds the ball, competes hard for it. a decent long kick when he goes for it
Hayes , the more he can get it, the better he looks. want to see him have more midfield time. good last half
West looks imposing, couple of more games in the VFL and he will be set. could have easily kicked 4-5
both McCarthy and Saxena had their moments, once they build their bodies up, they will be so much better

others on the day that were just ok
- Prindable, quiet day for him, thought conditions may suit him. first game though
- Howes, imposing type, presented but i want to see more of him leading to the ball carrier, was ok
- Ryan, steady down back. not flashy, just reliable
- Cochran, not much intercepting or bursting off half back. not ready for senior football yet. needs to add 5kg
- TJ, got better as the game wore on, just needs to be a bit more physical. another who needs time in the gym
- Buller, worked hard, his marking isn't up to scratch for a key forward though, could hold him back
- Allan, got plenty of hit, but doesn't hurt anywhere enough with his disposals, needs to run with it more
- Anderson, a couple of big plays early, that run through the pack dish off handpass to Sullivan was great
- Smit, was just ok, has good upside being so mobile for his size but disposal, especially kicking ,needs to improve
- Harrison, looked ok before tweaking an ankle, looked frustrated on bench after injury

VFL forward line looked too big and congested with Buller back down there. really needs to be 3 of West, Howes, Buller and McCarthy at any one time
also, does Grey have to play midfield, prefer we get all our Senior listed players who are in the VFL at the time to be starting mids. they need all the exposure they can get, ie Hayes and Swadling need to be at centre bounces to progress at a faster rate

I know it was their first run, but did any of them show any tough play at or around stoppages?
