We started to see the talent of Oscar again yesterday, and how much development he missed out last year when injured. He's now holding his own and stronger in the ruck and the contest.

Reminded me of this

I had high hopes for Oscar. Shame he has missed so many games due to injury.

Haven't given up on him yet.

It's not a myth that's the type of size clubs would prefer, Sam Darcy goes alright.
For one of their forwards. Not many teams play 2 that size, as with the odd exception like Daniher and Buddy that size doesn't usually come with much ground level game.

Literally every player on the list “has the tools” to some extent, so by your logic we should persist with every player and never delist anyone, which is obviously ridiculous and impossible, so no your logic is terrible.

Which players do we persist with? The ones who actually perform well and show in their performances that they can actually do things that will translate well at AFL level to our playstyle.

I’m still waiting to hear what he’s actually done or is doing at VFL level that’s making him worth persisting with once his deal expires, and you’re yet to list anything outside of the basic attributes he was drafted on, so 🤷🏻
He has elite endurance, and is proficient on both sides of his body. Those 2 tools alone put him ahead of the pack, then add above average pace and intercept ability, size, and the gap widens.
He showed enough to be given a game in his first season, until concussion floored him.
I have every confidence he’ll get back to that level and realize his potential.

You’re a doubter which is fine.

If Ryan had a the pace to match his great endurance he'd have played more games. The whole reason he plays it so safe is he doesn't have the acceleration, therefore the condifence to break the lines. It governs his entire game. No idea how people can watch him and think hes quick. Maye the flowing hair makes him look faster, i dunno.

He'll be just fine. Missed a lot of development last year with his injury, but has had a good preseason and put on some size. DC sang his praises in the pre-season as one to watch. He is definitely holding his own a lot more now he is stronger. Hopefully can get a good run at it.

He looked good for his first hit out for the year

His running ability is super impressive. I'm guilty of being a doubter on him and Fin in the past.
Hoping they both make me look stupid and kill it.
Ryan has shown improvement in the gym and on the track. He's trying his guts out which shows he means business.
I'm behind all our players in support.

It looked to me that all the boys have improved from last year. I really like Ryan, I think he's improved from last year

Bulldogs need to get rid of a forward or two if Croft comes good. There is a opportunity to get a JUH type from them.

When you say ‘JUH type’, you mean a player who goes missing on indefinite leave over personal issues?

Wouldn’t have thought that type of player would be so difficult to find?

Heck, even I could do that. I’d be at least as good as JUH at it, and I’d do it for a lot less $$$.

People make mistakes. Some rectify them.

Of course, but that still wouldn’t preclude me.

I’m very good a making mistakes, and I have been known to rectify them from time to time.

That type who will still attract recruiting attention is very difficult to find and unfortunately doesn't include you and I.

I've always been a big fan of big Oscar, and think he can become quite a player for us. On what he showed yesterday, if he can stay fit he can make up for that lost time rather quickly.

That’s what Marketing is for.

Recruit me, and I’ll be the biggest draft story ever for its surprise and unlikeliness. And I won’t disappoint, because no way anybody will ever let me anywhere near a footy field to prove the doubters right.

True story: when I was in my young 20’s I was looking for a team to play scratch basketball with. I called up my local basketball centre (the old Albert Park centre) and asked how I’d go about getting a game?

The person on the end of the phone clearly didn’t understand the assignment, because he said “Come down on a Wednesday evening and Lindsey Gaze will give you a tryout” 🤣

All you’re doing here is repeating yourself, listing the attributes he was drafted on. Those don’t put him ahead of anyone they just get his foot in the door. I’m asking what he’s actually done at VFL level or doing that elevates him ahead of guys like Jiath, or Parker? He’s not even ahead of those guys, there’s no “gap” between him and them. So who in this “pack” so to speak, is he actually ahead of?

Parker was given multiple games in his first year coming off no preseason and 3 years out of the game. TJ was also given a game last year, although he clearly wasn’t ready, as Ryan wasn’t in his first year either (imo).

Yes I’m absolutely a doubter. I’ve seen bits of play from both TJ and Parker (Parker in particular) that make me think “yeah that will translate well to AFL level”. Parker has already shown he’s almost there in his games late last year and in the preseason.
TJ I look at and see glimpses of things like closing speed, marking and defensive intercept work that make me sit up and go “wow that was impressive.”

I don’t get that from Ryan. His intercept game is decent without being outstanding, and his ball use is slow and safe. I barely see any of the “dashing run and carry” that was said about him in his draft year. That’s why I keep asking what it is that puts him ahead but you just keep parroting his basic attributes that got him drafted instead of giving me a real answer…

Ruckwork is going to be the issue. Is he going to become strong enough to compensate for the fact that he's always going to be giving away height?

He looks tall enough to me - on the field, and on paper! While the club website has him at 201cm, this year's official AFL publications list him at 202cm, which seems more than reasonable for an AFL ruckman to me! There's a few like Gawn and Witts who are a good deal taller than him, but there's also quite a few first-choice ruckmen currently playing who are in the 201-204cm range. He's a very decent mark, and should be capable of spending time up forward (when not rucking) and kicking a few goals.

I liked what I saw of Smit last year as well, and think it should be fun watching the "battle" between he and Steene to one day be Cameron's successor. I think we're quite well placed in that regard.

Rucks are getting taller. I think the good ones of his height are physical brutes.
