She Rides Shotgun (2025)

Taron Egerton plays a recently released convict who abducts his 10 year old daughter (Ana Sophia Heger) to protect her from his former associates. Egerton is very good as usual. Heger is an outstanding actress for her age. Rob Yang also chips with a good performance as a cop who is trying to help them. There's a good mix of intimate character scenes and action. It just gets a bit silly towards the end, which is a shame as it's otherwise a very solid mid-budget movie.

I need more movies like this and When Harry Met Sally pleeeease

Joe Versus the Volcano, as another Meg Ryan/Tom Hanks movie, is kinda wacky but their chemistry is pretty great.

I don't love You've Got Mail as much but the film it's remaking, The Shop Around the Corner, is extremely charming. I think Nora was very into those classics, including An Affair to Remember, which Sleepless in Seattle is obviously inspired by and references.

When Harry Met Sally is very in the realm of Woody Allen, who's obviously pretty controversial these days, but I think his 70s/80s films are incredibly charming - Annie Hall the obvious, if you've never seen it.

Arrival

Enjoyed it immensely, well acted and great subject matter. First genuine 5/5 film that I've watched (for the first time) in ages.

Up next (by the weekend at least).....I went on a mini treasure trove inspired by reminiscing about certain Disney (of the made for tv variety) movies in the 80s and 90s. The rabbit hole led me to making a $5 digital purchase of something I liked when I was little. Will be interesting to see if I like it today vs 35-40 years ago.

Spoiler alert: Fred Savage was in it (and no its not The Wizard)

Mario Galaxy.

Cinema was pretty full. Little kids went absolutely bonkers on Yoshi.

Kids will love it if they enjoyed the first one. Wonderful colour and visuals.

Adults will enjoy the retro Nintendo verse throwbacks and the adult themes and jokes to be satisfied.

And under 100 minutes doesn't drag on. And bravo to all the kids behaving (well done parents and guardians/other family members).

Kids 9/10 Adults 7/10

Fuze - an unexploded World War Two bomb is found in a construction site in west London, so the military bomb squad is called in to defuse it. With the local area evacuated, a team sets to take advantage of the chaos to pull of a bank heist. For the first 45 minutes I thought this little seen movie has been totally slept on, its taut plotting which is basically procedural just throws you into this world, as you alternate between The Hurt Locker and Inside Man. After the film moves into its second half it loses a lot of that tautness and overcomplicates the plot pretty severely, all leading to one of the most baffling final five minutes I've ever seen in a film. It's a bit of a weird beast to wrestle with, because there's honestly half a great movie here, but not many movies can just plummet like that in their final scenes.

Buffalo '66 (1998) - noted scumbag Vincent Gallo directs and stars in this 90s independent classic about a man who leaves prison and kidnaps Christina Ricci to have her pretend to be his wife and impress his parents. Gallo here is one of the all time cinematic losers and this film honestly a quite beautiful tale of redemption. I know some criticise it for that fact, that Gallo's such a POS that he doesn't deserve it, but I think it's heartwarming that it's optioned. There's a lot of comedy along the way, as well as some really transcendal scenes.

Nuremberg (2025)

Great portrayal of the Nazi trials and events leading up to them. Story told in a way that was easy to follow, plenty of light humor surprisingly and pacing was good for wider audiences - it could so easily have been slow and heavy but it was never boring.

A couple of really confronting scenes hit you hard in different ways.

Russell Crowe as Herman Goerring was terrific I thought, had such a huge presence on screen and I forgot it was Crowe.

The other Nazis on trial seemed so cold and real that they didn’t seem like actors so they were cast perfectly.

Malik played an interesting and flawed character superbly as expected.

It just lacked something to elevate it to top tier, maybe it needed to be a little darker for my personal liking, not sure.

Recommend it tho particularly if WW2 appeals.

Just watched Michael.

Jaafar Jackson take a bow a son he was amazing you legit forget that it’s him and you are just watching MJ

Don’t know why the critics are review bombing the movie I thought it was fantastic if your a fan of his music you will love it or

If your expecting the movie to deep dive into the allegations etc you will be disappointed and will hate this film

The French Connection (1971)

Slowly getting through the Friedkin stuff. What a cool Best Picture winner! Can see how the action would have blown people's socks off in the early 70s.

Was feeling a little bit like homework in the first half, but the second half and the chase scene were pretty undeniable 8/10

The Roses

Had no idea this was a remake but as someone that hadn't heard of (let alone seen) the original, I think this was enjoyable enough to stand on it's own. Nothing ground breaking but I quite enjoy the British humour. An enjoyable 1 hr 45 spent watching it with my wife.

Ah, you could start the submariner movies series...

Hunt for Red October, Crimson Tide, U-571 and Down Periscope. All pretty good in their own right.

i think i can only watch that sort of claustrophobic setting occasionally. i haven't actually seen any of those other than red october, but i'm curious. you've also inspired me to see what other cruddy submarine movies are around too.

counter measures (sequel to crash dive, with michael dudikoff - which i have a copy of)
steel sharks - gary busey, billy dee williams. should be... interesting.
both of those well under 5.0 on imdb.

there's also this one which is a little bit 'titanic'

Dunno if you've gotten to it yet, but To Live and Die in LA might have an even better car chase scene than The French Connection.

Sorcerer and Cruising also favourites of mine.

I think the last line is very much why its being criticized. I read some detail on the history of the films development and originally it was going to have alot more about that aspect of his life then the lawyers for his estate pointed out that a stack of NDAs and gag orders still exist pertaining to most of that stuff and it mostly got scrapped.

If its another Bohemian Rhapsody it probably just feels unneccesary.

I mean, you kinda answered your own question there. It presents itself as a biography of Michael Jackson and then throws out a puff piece that ignores anything controversial that can't be pinned on someone else. I saw the preview and it just looked horrendous, a work of fiction in order to lionise him. If I want to hear his greatest hits, I can put on his albums.

Mortal Kombat - The new one.

The three films complete in readiness for the new one.

I totally forgot how badass the secondary storyline between Joe Taslim (Sub Zero) and Hiroyuki Sanada (Scorpion) was but that part of this is REALLY good.

The rest is truly a middling affair. Josh Lawson is very funny to me (and i assume probably lands as Kano for foreign audiences) the guys that play Liu Kang and Kung Lao seem to think some scenes are very cheesy and funny and some are super serious and look, i love Jess McNamee and shes an upgrade in every way on Brigette Wilson but shes bad. Maybe Sonya Blade is an impossible character to portray, who knows.

The main dude is pretty weird overall, i dont think hes a game character and i dont really get why we needed a new character as the protagonist for a pretty dumb overall story anyway. Hes also been dropped from the sequel inspite of having a clear tie in to the sequel at the end of this movie sooooo...

Anyway, i had a good time.

I dont know. 6/10 i guess?

No quite a sub movie but it is used as part of the main plot point.

On The Beach, 1959 original or 2000 remake.
Is a post-apocalyptic story set in Melbourne, Australia, as the last remaining humans await death by radioactive fallout following a global nuclear war.

Yep plenty of MJ music videos out there to watch instead.

Before its release one of my mates was fawning over the Thriller part of the movie where he said it’s “exactly the same and indistinguishable from the original music video”…

Just go watch the music video then.

The best part about band/artist biopics is always just the songs so they always feel like a waste of time to me. Music videos and albums and interviews exist to consume instead of watching what is always just a fluff piece.

Can be helpful to just forget the MJ bit and vaguely think of Thriller as just another Quincy Jones-Patti Austin album. MJ has that little bit extra, but listening wise it’s not far off the mark.

The Boys in the Band is my favourite from Friedkin.

amazing/OMG part of The French Connection is that car chase was done without getting permissions from the city or cordoning off the roads - that's all real people that they're dodging. Kinda fkd up but kinda cool!

Yeh, I think Bohemian Rhapsody really ruined any future puff piece bios for music.

I remember walking out of that thinking it was excellent and then over the course of 24 hours i just like the music and the movie was shit.
