I've always been a big supporter of Nicks, and had hopes he'd be our next premiership coach, but it is becoming evident that his Crows legacy might just be resetting the culture at the club. He came to the club when nobody would stay, nobody would come, which has been flipped on its head. But we rarely see the rebuild coach stay on until a premiership is won (outside of Fagan). John Longmire, Adam Simpson? An Assistant who has been in a successful set up like Stephen King? Hopefully we can turn it around but a loss in the showdown could be our season.

'for whatever reason'

Perhaps we could hire someone to prepare the players and have them ready to go and play as a team?

The thing is though I’m sick of hearing that Nicks doesn’t rate us. He always talks about us like we are lucky to be there or in it
Glad more people are spotting this.

He doesn't trust the playing group to play to their strengths. This is bleedingly obvious though:

1) constantly wanting to go slow and defensive, even when we're leading
2) not backing in our depth and bringing young players int the team, or altering his order of selections made in November
3) making comments like "we've got to earn the right to play fast", as if we're naturally not good enough to
4) constantly referring to players' "work-ons" rather than celebrating strengths

It's his ever-increasing conservative nature that he'll never shake and why he's our biggest handbrake to success

Ultimately we need a coach who doesnt believe holding a team to 60 points through suffocating football is the key to winning a premiership.
I would imagine a coach who would develop a game plan as I described would also be intelligent enough to work that out.

I've been wanting him sacked since the Hawthorn game in 2022.

The guy is a dunce who coaches a horrifically ugly brand of football.

He's essentially Temu Paul Roos running on 2005 firmware.

I noticed replies to Crows Facebook posts have turned and are now pro-sacking Nicks.
When John Dorman swings it’s all over

It won’t happen today, but it will happen soon. It’s time the Crows to start looking for a new coach.

Mathew Nicks 2020 - 2026
Games: 137 (58 - 78 - 1 draw)

Finished position

2020: 18th
2021: 15th
2022: 14th
2023: 10th
2024: 15th
2025: 1st (no finals wins)
2026: 13th (current position)

The very poor record speaks for itself. Miss finals this year and the Crows administration cannot accept that. His time is up.

You must have missed the crows last year. Literally the worst KPI you can give him and the club. They just signed him extra year to buffer him from your suggestion as we develop some more. He needs air or the team wont be genuinely developing for flag at all. As league currently stands he has ability to paper over cracks and shut you up and keep himself in job.

Nicks hasn't got enough top end talent to work with, no amount development going help a few of them. He and club dont make good decisions quick enough here. My scepticism has been aimed at club purpose and priorities and least the already known partial failure of the rebuild. Which stems from list decisions and team selection. Not without risk but strayed off full rebuild and went conservative decision making. Went off short term make finals. Probably again, to shut you lot up (and perhaps relic sanfl insistence make good dividend and Trigg big deal himself announcing sponsors is why bums on seats passed down, also we Afl lap dogs best times let alone under their influence). The forced rebuild via camp was a free kick for those at club, a great chance for them to define it, we talking legacy. Instead I see status quo. Club in rebuild trading pick 25 in super draft for 29yo was but one for normal resumption.

Players having learn some more again. Maybe unlearn some. Some indecision eventuates. Unless in back half transition or fwd 50 stoppage things dont generally look smooth enough, looks bit clunky. We dont appear organised enough, not enough set play, not drilled enough, not everyone on same page. Not sure how many times over years seen dont even appear have heap voice. Perhaps all of it summed up by Murray last week late in first umming and ahhing what to do with ball from a mark at CHB speed on ball, inside centre square inside corridor, obviously not aware one minute remaining in qtr. He had least couple (arguably one strong if organised) options i saw including move it fast or defend with it and chose none. Some this just on circumstances, some on Nicks.

We need put foot down sort this out. Starting to get out hand. Development has to be taken serious to extents its question of balance to win the game. Avoid at own risk. Perhaps could start with wanting to get inside position a bit more and using first touch (hunt ball over space) and around the ground not so rigid back shoulder (hunt space over man)?? Three crows forwards last week led by metres to aerial ball by three Saints defenders, Saints touch ball but manages to get thru, falls into Tex lap he kicks winning goal. Sweating off, out the back, being led to ball - ultimately short term solutions and not sustainable??

Been a supporter of Nicks, he has turned the clubs culture around post camp and got us through the rebuild phase

But starting to believe - new coach is needed to take the group forward

The reql issues for me right now are -

1. Out structure is wrong, the game has got faster and today we play 3xKPF and 2x Rucks. Too tall and goes against what the better teams are doing.

2. Team selection has been safe, layers like ROb and Jomes just won’t improve us, we need to play talent

3. There doesn’t seem to be any selection pressure for poor performances- players like Keays and Cumming keep getting selected despite a string of bad games

4. We just have to many players out of form and too inconsistent as a footy club, not just from game to game but qtr to qtr

The reality is - we won’t sack Nocks with a year to run on his deal

I'm confused. Those are all cultural issues that both pre-date Nicks, and continue to exist.

What did we turn around?

why did he finish the presser with "sorry guys, I can't give you much" with a wry laugh. not reading too much into of course... but it struck me as pretty weird. šŸ˜…

despair? defeat?

He thought he was at a mid week strategy meeting for a second there
