What I do want to signal attention to was that Wharfie Time goal: A lot of flack for Treacy taking on the tackle but I genuinely think that was the idea and pretty bloody good play tbh. It was a 3 on 2 situation about 35 out. Hawthorns defence had shut that down all night, Treacy decides to take it on, gain an extra 5-10 metres and dragged all 3 defenders into the tackle leaving Amiss with a lot more space and less distance to goal

That was some game of footy. Hawks bring a scrappy pressure game and some elite kicking. Their early accuracy actually made it look worse than it was, we smashed them in most if the metrics across the game including scoring shots and if JT had his kicking boots on we would have belted them. 28 scoring shots to 18... JT is growing as a coach. Good tactical changes and the team is up and about playing for him. Even when we made the GF it didn't feel as cohesive as this. Enjoying the ride, this is something special.

Also, we're a legit contender. Things have to fall our way and there's a lot of luck involved but we're up there with the best of them and anything can happen from here.

Where are the commentators who thought JLo was a no-go?

gotta be something in that missed tackles stat btw, considering we were leading the league in differential before this game. the illness or the 6 day breaks?
I think we sacrificed some tackling ferocity for not giving away high tackles. I think we barely gave any away today against a team who normally get a boatload.

Definitely a focus area for the Hawks going into the game, made it very hard to get our forward handpass game going, and was critical for them to get it to the outside and in space.

Pretty sure Matty J had 50% of those missed tackles!

If we meet them in September I think we break even on that, team are pretty good at applying these lessons these days.

If you were to survey 100 Dockers supporters, all 100 would have pointed to Pearce’s turnover that led to Gunston’s goal as the moment that broke the camel’s back, and that we will go on to have an honourable loss, and more questions raised about whether we are legitimate or not. For it to not break the lads, but rather (seemingly) galvanised them was pretty insane, and that mental toughness might the the most impressive thing to come out of last night..👍

And just on Wharfie time, to be part of the crowd losing their collective minds after having just witnessed the sequence of Freddy kicking his goal, Wharfie Time coming on, followed immediately by Jye kicking his goal was seriously core memory stuff..

He disappeared 2nd half but can you imagine this team with Watson in it? The guy is an absolute nightmare. Knowing how much work must go into stopping him, how does he always end up hitting a pack off to the side at full pace with 2 metres. Absolutely nutty player. I think we seriously need to have a plan just for him come finals and would bring Walks in just for him. He's the only one on our list that can get near him.

Gunston is just a freak and the connection he has with Ginnivan et all is ridiculous. If their midfield has any space he just cooks you with smarts and a team that can kick as well as any. I dont really understand why Chappy didnt go onto him tbh and Ryan was a really odd move.

Given Treacy was cooking him early anyway, I dont take too much out of Barrass missing most of the game. The one that makes me nervous returning for any potential rematch is Day. The game played out as predicted for the most part. Our midfield was just too strong and battered them into submission but Day could make that harder down the line.

they were playing a game entirely dedicated to having gunston 1v1 with basically the entire 50 to himself. i dont think putting chapman in that role, dedicated basically to only defending would have benefitted our game overall. chapman can impact the game in a big way up the ground.

from cox post game, seems they initially had him on gunston until late and ryan got the match up. dont really think any one player would have made a massive difference to what gunston did early, they were quick transition balls with low pressure, and gunston is just a very smart player.

I'd agree wholeheartedly if he didnt take basically 7 uncontested forward 50 marks until Cox finally got a stop (with hilarious crowd cheering to boot). Some of the kicking was incredible from the Hawks and like you said, isolating Gunston was a plan but we've got to have a better way to stop it in the future. He can not have 7 set shots on goal in a half of footy, regardless of the service from up the field.

I would think if they do that again, the best match-up for Gunston is the most important thing, regardless of loss of rebound IMO.

How good is a Friday after a Thursday night win.

I wish September was here already this is going to be a special few months coming up.

I havent felt more alive to be a Freo fan then right now.

We look and feel invincible.

We will cop a loss here and there when its not expected but we should be winning 17-18 games.

Also, games like that make any argument the skills are worse then they were back in the "good old times" pretty hilarious. Gunston got a sniff of the 80s and 90s forwardline space and looked unstoppable. The skill of players these day is leagues above what they were, oldies just forget there's about half as much time and space to dispose of it then there used to be

emotionally, it sucks ****ing hard to watch a player get on a roll like gunston did in the first half, but do you think the hawks will set up like that again in the future? basically relying on a single player to be your source of goals. very rarely do you see teams set up like that in todays game right?

in the second half when they couldnt get it past the wing, i reckon in large part thats because one of their fwds is basically non existent until they get it i50 and they didnt otherwise have a contest winner.

clearly a good tactical battle with ebbs and flows though!
