The other interesting thing is when was the last time the Doggies got a big trade.

I think they traded for Kennedy a few years ago but the Bulldogs are usually on the bottom of the list of players coming back home to Melbourne.

They won't want to stuff this up.

On Gettable, I'm pretty sure the consensus between those two blokes is the Doggies first three rounders is the starting point as it is not enough to get the deal done.

Hopefully a few of their guys want to move on and they have some draft capital in the pocket for us.

He sighed in January for 3 years he’s not going to want to just forget that and move to Adelaide.
Seriously think about it?
When’s the last player you know signed a 3 year deal and agreed to move interstate 6 months later.
FMD
It's pretty rare.

We could offer him huge midfield minutes but after that, not else is on offer.

Could also pay him a hell of a lot more than what he is currently on, Money talks
Yeah, we would have a fair amount of cash that was meant to go to Butters.
Ditto Sanders.

As others have stated, he's recently signed a new three year deal so it would be pretty good and up to date so to speak but sometimes money talks.

The player has to want to move to SA and leave a club he only just signed up with.
It’s not happening, I can see our supporters wanting a top player in the deal but it’s most probably going to be Picks and a bog average player if it’s from a good side.
The only way I can see us doing well out of this is if he went to a lower ranked club but he’s reportedly said he wants success so that kills that idea.
I’ve run out of ways seeing this ending well for us unless we nail every draft pick we get for him.

That sounds like a bulldogs problem

It shouldn’t be up to us to roll over and hand them a superstar for free cause they don’t want to give anyone up.

That’s their ****ing problem.

Also, why are you assuming we can’t get any other team involved in a trade? We don’t need to convince freijah or sanders to come here. There’s 16 other teams in the league , and as i said , many of them are going have more money to offer them than the dogs (that just would have made butters the highest paid player in history) and would be able to offer those players much more midfield time than the dogs.

Shit he doesnt even have to move house to play for half of the possible trade destinations.
It’s shown over time in these situations it’s been us to fold when all the cheap talk is over.
If he wants to go to the dogs we will accommodate that as we always have had apart from Steven’s and that was before Jesus arrived.
Only way we can do well out of this is if we get some serious talent with the picks we get for Butters, if he goes.

Yes we’ve been soft , that doesn’t mean port fans should expect to be ****ed no lube for eternity and enjoy it.

So far we’re making the right noises about matching it, which has drawn very public noise in the vic media saying we’re adamant we will match.

If butters wants to leave and go to dogs or Geelong he only gets there if we send him there. Ain’t getting there in any draft.

We need to them them , this is what it takes if you want him. Make it happen or don’t. No doubt there’s discussion around the frills of the deal but if neither team wants to put first 22 players on the table then we should walk away.

We don’t exist to make other teams stronger.

We don’t need these players to agree to be traded to us, they can go to other teams to unlock deals there.

Next year would be better timing if Butters is going to go. Tasmania have some juicy draft picks that they have to trade and when other clubs have been in this situation there have been some one sided deals for the club that is losing the player. And we will need picks more next year than this year.

The noise is that dogs and Geelong are the front runners for butters , gee I don’t see how Geelong could get a trade done.

The only tradeable assets they have are

2026 - 1st (approx 15) 2nd (32-40) unsure if they can trade 1st and 2nd?
2027 - 1st (looking at about 25-35 due to expan draft)
2028 - 1st (20-30 - less expan picks in this draft I think)

As for players they have very few. Neale would be untouchable.

A list we might look at would be

Barker - (recent Sa draftee , injured hasn’t played went at pick 24 in a weak draft)
Connor Sullivan - love this kid. Would be perfect for our list. 0 chance we requests a trade to us 0 chance Geelong entertain talk , maybe could talk his manager into looking at other vic clubs but unlikely . Still has to be on our wish list.
Lawson humphries - wa kid I believe , should have some interest to us but doubt we can shake him nor is he even that big of a target for for us to move the needle much

Dekoning - don’t really like him for us. 1 year away from fa , age doesn’t fit us if we lose butters , maybe he wants to go to another club but he prob waits for free agency .. not sure clubs offer a lot for him?

They’ll look to include knevitt but he’s delist material they’ll be lucky to get pick 104 for him.
Jhye Clark is a former pick 8 who looks an absolute bust. They might’ve able to move him for a 3rd rounder if someone thinks they can turn him around buts he just as likely to go somewhere in the psd really.

To show how bad that hand is, if they were using it to trade into this draft .. their 27 1st wouldnt get anything better than a mid 2nd rounder in 26. 28 pick prob doesn’t get you much better. Maybe you could trade both of those into something like pick 25 if you’re lucky.

So maybe looking at 15,25 and barker for butters ? **** no. That would be horrendous. If we turned around and offered 15,21 (our blues pick) and 25 for nas saints would tell us it isn’t half of what we would need.

Just don’t see how Geelong could give us anything discussing.

What the WB would offer is just as bad, if he leaves it seems we will be getting Sweet FA in return.

Butters wants to play in a team looking towards success not a new side starting up that’s going to be at least 10 years away from that.

I'm not saying that Butters would go to Tasmania, what I'm saying is Tasmania HAS to trade a handful of high draft picks for players. So there are high picks that will be traded in that draft and a higher chance we could get multiple Top 10 picks for him.

Correct. I wonder whether there's a way we tell him to sign a 1 year deal and we will be more open to a trade next year where he'll still be a RFA but we bring in other commodities into play, i.e the Tassie pick, 2029 future pick which won't be compromised, potentially NWM.

But we will not be trading him this year unless we are guaranteed a record bounty of something like 4 first round picks 2 of which need to be top 10 and in this year.

If in 2027 he realises he wants to be a port and a one club player then great. If not we'll at least get a better return than the rubbish we get now. I don't care about the chat that the industry isn't ready for players to announce 1 year before they go that they're leaving. You gotta do what's best for the club and tell him if he really wants to leave, he can get paid well for 1 year and then leave next year when we can actually get valuable collateral.

On top of that, you would kind of imply every thing Port has done for him, his mates there, and even the reasons with Robbie Gray and #9 and just explaining that he'll get paid handsomely for that extra year whilst it also allows port to actually not be screwed over by these clubs. Explain that, if he truly does give or gave a shit about the club and the players and mates he's made there, would he really feel comfortable seeing these clubs and even the AFL trying to screw port over? Considering they were quite happy to try and screw him over not long ago. I understand it's manipulation but come on, if he can't see that and what the AFL is and has done plus what potential clubs would do in a trade.

I mean, that 1 year also allows him to see another year under Carr and new system, etc.. especially if this season gets better and better. To then decide perhaps better to stay on.

Yep totally agree, an extra by 1 year is probably better than an extension by 2 as in the former scenario he remains a RFA whereas in the latter he becomes a UFA. If he's a man that wants to do right by the club then I think he'll sign on. I also don't think the club will keep him against his wishes even if he does sign a long term deal then wants out, as long as the trade package is better than whatever dogs will serve up now

Plus they can’t fit everyone in the same midfe

Afl have screwed trading of out of contract players. If butters wont sign he should have to go in draft then port get next pick after hes taken. Instead port will get cats or dogs 1st pick only like cats gave dogs for smith and thats all

If that's the case we might as well take the AFL compo which we won't do. You'll need to give more than what Freo gave for Bolton - plenty more.

Good call. You should go and past this on the D and T board.
