AFL Club
Port Adelaide
Classic Bigfooty story but have heard from someone who is close with Zac Bailey that Zac was quite disappointed with Brisbane's initial contract offer. Turns out it was $1m a season over 5 years so he isn't going to come cheap!

Carlton and Port Adelaide could be forced into desperate trades as proposed draft bidding changes threaten their plans to secure top-three draft prospects Cody Walker and Dougie Cochrane.
Clubs are bracing for changes to the father-son and academy bidding system that would see them only able to use a maximum of two first-round draft picks to match bids on elite first-round prospects.
In the past, teams have been able to accumulate a vast selection of later draft picks which add up to the necessary points to help match bids placed by other clubs.
Clubs have been told the AFL Commission will in the coming months make a call on this year’s bidding system changes.
Carlton and Port Adelaide are both planning to access potential top three draft prospects in Cody Walker and Dougie Cochrane, which will see rivals launch early bids.
But clubs believe this year’s changes will mean that if a side wants to match a bid in the first round, they will only be able to use the accumulative points from two picks which must fall in the same round.
Clubs might be able to go into a points deficit for the next year’s draft but that deficit will be capped.

The worst-case scenario for Port Adelaide would be that free agent Zak Butters departs and they force a trade that sees them secure multiple first-round picks but then have to use them to match a bid for Cochrane.
Under the previous bidding system they could have taken Cochrane after accumulating the points from later picks and still had a bevy of first-round picks to take to the national draft.

If they get drafted by other clubs and walk after one/two years, those clubs should be restricted to only being able to ask for two first round picks for them.

This is one of the times when Port needs to show its spine and take this to the nth degree. Make a legal challenge in court if there is a way.

The AFL have had this rigged system for years and so many teams have taken advantage of it. Yet now Port are likely to be on the good end of it finally for a change, only to see the AFL move the goalposts to make it borderline impossible to obtain any sort of advantage by having these NGA and F/S selections.

Our Club has quite literally invested millions into the academy program over a number of years. The return is meant to be realised just as it has with so many other teams, in the form of getting high quality young players at a cheap price in terms of draft capital.

The league moving the goalposts this year whilst allowing trades multiple years in the future also reeks of competitive imbalances and inequity. No amendment to these rules should occur for at least 2 years given no picks in those draft classes can be traded, and hence, all teams remain on an even playing field.

Bit ridiculous that the AFL still hasn't come out and officially state what the new bidding rules are with Opening round looming literally next week.

Wasn't it stated that they were going to announce the new bidding rules late last year? Yet here we are in late February and still nothing despite all the reporting by media outlets regarding the bidding rules.

Oh well, Doug comes home in 2 years worst case

The AFL have absolutely no shame

We are just lucky Carlton have Walker to go to them. If we were on our own we'd be royally fcuked.

Let's hope Carlton can do some 'Big 4 Club' dick swinging and we can ride their coattails for this one.
Its not going to make a big diff this year and Cochrane is well worth it.

But if you want Salopek AND Pilot you basically need to be ready with 4 first rounders. and other clubs will also need firsts for their NGAs and F/S. Almost not worth the hassle going after 2 players especially if theres no discount.

It'd be incredibly simple to just insist that clubs use their next natural pick in the draft or higher as part of a bid match, or pay a significant points penalty for not doing so (if they'd already traded it out or whatever, charge them more to match).

But instead the floated changes make it effectively impossible to match a high first round bid, just after Brisbane won a flag with two Ashcrofts.

Add 10% to the required points value for every pick it takes to match the bid or something. Idk. There are plenty of options that squeeze clubs taking academy players without making them functionally impossible to draft.

The afl is utterly incapable of making a fair decision. Always has

This is happening to directly affect us getting our players it'll be reversed in a couple of years.

Having seen Port's attempts at defending match review findings, I hope they get some additional external legal advice and that Carlton's doing the same.

Ridiculous that they're talking about making changes after the season has already started, and where draft picks for that draft have already been traded.

Get their lawyers to question the AFL on how it can make drastic sudden changes to restrictions surrounding workforce recruitment without adequate consultation, and surely that's enough to delay it long enough to get past 2026.

Dont think there is any risk there lol

They shouldn't even be touching these rules until after Tasmania come in.. Imagine needing enough draft points to match anywhere in top 5 for a club trying to keep or get their f/s or academy player and Tassie literally has all the draft picks and it's compromised the draft massively.. That and their is a lot of restricted free agents which might lead to even more issues with compensation picks. It's an absolute rort. You'd think clubs, specifically Port, would have lawyers involved.

You watch AFL make it so these father sons and academy players have no say in it, allowing Tasmania to draft them without issues.

Sadly the AFL love a rash reactionary change.

It’s should be a similar setup to the US sports. If you can trade current/future/2 years into the future the AFL should mandate that no major changes can be made to the draft without 3 years notice just like the US sports do. But no one has accused the AFL of being well run for a while so that would be too sensible.

What does 'offer' mean? Surely it's the standard draftee contract regardless of which team initially.
