I'm not picking on Geelong here. All teams toss the ball around so much these days, the AFL should just rip the handball rule out of the book and allow players to dispose the ball any way they wish. They're pretty much doing it anyway.
Chris Scott: “we teach our players not to throw so the umpires should just believe they are handballing”

Don't underestimate Geelong but also, don't overestimate them. There are holes and weaknesses in that team. The biggest issue most teams have against them is their "brand". Its a perception thing and it permeates throughout the industry. Brisbane showed in last year's GF that they can be pounded into submission. Much of it is about the attitude and dsicipline teams take into the game.

They are one of many teams who just need Hawthorn to play their best

Jezza was injured first quarter. Was the difference.

They are so much like Collingwood in how they play.
They drag it back to a slog and kick opportunist goals and rarely get too far behind if they're playing badly.

And for both of them they're quite crap to watch now.

Adelaide Oval is 123m wide - only 8m wider than Kardinia Park (115m wide).

Geelong are at home on the skinny little Auskick grounds. Put them on the wide open spaces of the MCG (141m wide) and Geelong get run off their legs,. And their defensive zone - which is as good as anyones on the skinny grounds - gets stretched past its limits.

It isnt the width, its the length. Longer ground gives them more space to lead into. It also is harder for teams to adjust gameplans. gws have done it well down there, but most keep the same positions, but in a normal ground a kick inside 50 from a rushed kick lands 35-40out at KP, that lands 60 out, everyone not in position

There is actually not that much difference in the length - I assume this table is still current.

I do agree that Geelong exploit space of over the back better than anyone.

Interesting, because visibly you can see the visiting players completely out of position. Psychological?

Freo showing what ruthless efficiency looks like 10 goals from barely 20 entries, clear space to lead into at all times. Chalk and cheese to us last night.
This. Absolutely ruthless and twisting the knife.
We dont do this to average teams.

Agreed

It is fair to point out though that other than the Bombers (who we did score heavily against) we haven't yet played anyone as rubbish as North.

I dont think we are in enough form to do this to the Roos but I am curious to see what happens when we finally get a chance against the bottom tier.
