I think numbers are a sentimental notion but a wonderful facet of football.

I would suggest that the Jay Nash deserves a numbers of greater import. Perhaps #26?

Daniher may get #23; something about his body type reminds me of Cransberg and Bolton but not wishing their particularly forgettable tenure of the number.

Much like everybody else, nobody really deserves #5, with perhaps the slightest possibility of Ryder.

Some of the other kids like Hislop, Reimers and Lonergan may deserve lower numbers but none seem to demand the honor. Perhaps at a stretch Reimers is #17 but depending on the PSD, that may be bestowed on someone else.

How often does a player change numbers through a career with a single club? I'm curious. I can think of Farmer during his Melbourne days going through two numbers (33, then 8, then 33 again, I think).

I'm all for McVeigh taking on the weight of that number. That would free up the pride built up in the one he's carrying now.

I feel sorry for the bloke, and I still remember the shaved headed little demon that cracked the side in '99 and looked like a player who'd been there forever, but his time was up.

He finishes at Essendon with B&F, a Premiership medallion and lots of memories. He should be satisfied with that regardless of how it finished.

I don't understand why ppl are calling for McVeigh to have No 5. Sure, he is the closest to embodying the Hird spirit that we have, but people, he's wearing no 10!! It's a number he's had great success in, and is forging another fine chapter.

The number 10 is just as steeped in tradition and glory as the no 5. Let McVeigh continue his great career in 10, and save 5 for someone else.

i think it should be saved and given to someone who has the potential to be a superstar leader of the club. hirdy wore it his entire career, i think the next person to get it should do the same, instead of giving it to someone else.

like others have said, mcveigh has made the number 10 his own and should stick with it.

is there any chance monfries will give up the number 6 for daniher? since his old man used to wear 6...
