Was always going to be that date, smart move by his manager, gives him enormous leverage when negotiating his next deal as he can play us off against Tassie or alternatively he can leave and join Tassie. Let's hope by 2028 we're in our second year of playing finals and the very idea of going to Tassie isn't even entertained.
Wrong
Tassie enter 2028

I’m think the plan is for Tassie to commence playing in 2028 at Blundstone, Launceston assuming the stadium hasn’t finished construction
My mistake, I saw the stadium was meant to be ready by 2029 and assumed that was when they entered the competition.

Hell be in his 5th season at North in 2028. We should be up to our eyeballs in finals.

Tassie can sign uncontracted players in 2027 and 2028, so if he goes then that's 2 first rounders were asking to be handed over for a contracted player.
And Tassie will own the 2027 draft.

We have leveraged ourselves quite well here. Club would have known this in 2023 anyway when we took him at pick 2.

Not sure I get what you're saying. They miss out on him in year 1. That's all that matters.

Montagna has given himself a good pantsing.

Ehhh not really.

Don't get me wrong; Colby extending is undeniably good news.

But we have to wait and see what powers the AFL gives Tasmania when it comes to building their list and recruiting players from other teams. There's a strong likelihood it won't matter if Colby was contracted or not; if Tasmania wants him and he wants to go there, I don't think his contract status will be a factor at all, other than determining what compensation we'll get in return for him.

Give me a spell. He’s committed to the end of 2028, there is no reason to believe he has any interest in going back to Tasmania as of this moment.

Nothing suggests he will as it stands right now. So let’s not be negative about it, fantastic commitment and puts the noise at ease regarding Colby for a few years.

Will Tasmania still have a crack? Absolutely.

However if he was hellbent on returning he would have signed a 1 year deal until the end of 2027.
