So the Saints game plan seems to revolve around freeing up your best 3 midfielders, four forwards (2 tall, 2 small), a ruck and then everyone else plays a negating role.

Freed up
Dal
Montagna
Riewoldt
Kosi
Milne
Schneider
Goddard

So what is our best 18 in a Ross Lyon environment?

For mine

Best 3 mids
Barlow
Fyfe
Mundy

Forwards
Hill
Pav
Balla
Clarke (or Clark)

Defenders/Taggers
McPharlin
Grover
Silvagni
Ibbotson
De Boer
Crowley
McPhee
Suban
Broughton
Duffield

This leaves an interesting scenario for the bench with Mayne, Morabito and Lower rotate through the side. Depending on Mora's development Hill, Mora and Fyfe could rotate through the mids/forwards.

Does the above work for Freo?

I think you need 18 players who are defensive minded.

Think Laidley said it and correct me if im wrong but if you add up all the time in a game where you actually have the ball in your hands its less then 10%.

So what are you doing with that other 90% of time?

How does Hill make one of the four best forwards? Surely he belongs in the midfield. Would Fyfe be best playing a high half forward role in the way that O'keefe from Sydney plays it?

Lyon will be able to do what Harvey probably wasn't capable of doing; he was too close. Basically take a step back, look at all the players strengths and weaknesses, forget about the 'maybe' stuff and structure up the side from there.

He'll simply go through every single player with the assistant coaches and take it from there.

As an example, if you lined up all of Mayne's strengths against his weaknesses, would he ever end up as your FF? Unlikely. However, if you'd been around for a while and tried a few different things out at varying times...

If you're MJ? Pointing.

true? sort of.
harsh? yes.
hilarious? definitely.

Harvey had the boys playing an amazing zone in 2010, and the tackle pressure they showed in 2009/2010 was outstanding.

Ross doesn't have to change much, just slightly adjust the structures, and re-focus the team.
