Soccer is virtually a non-contact sport. easier to step up or play a higher ranked team (FA Cup).
Much more difficult in contact sports.
In what other major sport is promotion/relegation a winner in 2015?
Does it exist in basketball, gridiron, ice hockey, rugby or league?

It's not just the contact its the scoring. You can dominate a team have 75% of possession and 10 shots on target but still lose due to conceding a lucky goal from a set piece. In Australian Rules the better team on the day almost always wins.

There was a promotion/relegation match for the 4th South African place in the Super Rugby last season. But it's been scrapped now the competition is set to expand.

It just doesn't work here because of the gulf in quality between the professional leagues and the lower divisions. True in all sports, unfortunately, the governing bodies work at keeping the "lower" leagues as weak as possible to reduce the chance of competition. I follow a stand alone VFA club, I should know.
