I know yous are focusin on this year which you will probably make the prelims at least, but as a young footy fan I looked back on 1997 and geez you were lucky that year.

scraped through to the finals in an even year, beat west coast first week, good win, second week scraped over Geelong then in the biggest choke of all time got over the Doggies and then beat St Kilda.

man do yous eva think how lucky u were? i know it counts as a flag but geez i'd be cut if i was a dogs fan.

We deserved that win against the doggies. We had a lot of the play for most of the day but just couldn't kick straight.

We have been pwning then in finals ever since.

Nice try dipsh.t. You're not Powerkop are you?
omg wtf l33t kewl pwned.

We were the best team in 1997 and deserved to win the premiership. We had the best percentage and one of the best, if not the best, defence in the league. If anything, I think we were unlucky to not win more than 13 games as we let some pretty close ones slip during that year.

Disregarding the poor language and focussing on the message:

Beat West Coast fair enough.

Margin in the Geelong game should have been higher except that a goal was credited to Geelong that clearly came of Bickley's boot - should have been a point.

Kicked poorly in the first quarter (0 goals 7 points) of the Bulldogs game, then lost Modra to a knee injury. Should have been level at half time, not 5 goals down. Over the whole match had about 7 more scoring shots. Would have been a complete injustice had the Crows lost the match. Fortunately kicked OK for the last four shots of the game.

Beat St Kilda easily in the GF by six goals.

====

In short, the only "luck" would have been bad luck if the Crows had missed out. A deserved win and would have been cut as a Crows fan if Bulldogs had made it to the GF.

I'm not sure how being on top of the ladder after round 20, and finishing 4th is "scraping through to the finals"

1997 Round 19 the Crows were top. That was the week of showdown II, a gutsy win in the wet for the Crows to gain top spot.

The week before Blight & Craig had initiated a "heavy training regime" so that the Crows could subsequently "taper off" for the finals series.

They paid the price for the hard slog training in the last few rounds and dropped a couple of games, to end up finishing fourth. They gained the benefit in the finals when they had only light training to become one of the few teams ever to win four finals matches in the one season.

How this record possibly translates (even in the minds of deluded melbournites) as "just scraping in" to the finals is anybody's guess.

Ok, I was off with the round by 1 - I knew it was after the showdown.

Aren't the Crows the ONLY team to have won 4 finals to win the flag?

I think they are the only team to have won four finals to win an AFL flag.

Way back when in VFL history there may have been a Vic side to do it also, and I suppose there is a chance that some of our friends from Melbourne might somehow think that is relevant.

It doesnt matter it was 8 years ago it dont think it was luck ok yes the bulldogs were unlucky in the prelim to lose a lead like that but if thats the case the bombers are lucky to be the premiers in 93. If you cant play all 4 quarters to finish a team of and they can run it out then thats not luck. But i do see where you are coming from.

Yes, we were very lucky to win. After all, we only 1) had the best defence and 2) best % in the league and 3) a number of losses in close games during the year - Collingwood at VP and Essendon at Optus (both less than a kick) and 4) top after round 19. And what happened in 1998 - guess what??? - 1) had the best defence and 2) best % in the league. Were we worthy Premiers - absolutely - 4 wins in a row one year and the following year for 5 games on the road with 4 wins and 1 loss (1 minor round and 4 major round). Take that.

i tend to agree somewhat, we were pretty lucky at times, the game against Geelong could have gone either way, same applies to the Doggies game. but good teams make their own luck, and then great players like D Jarman dont even need luck at all

i doubt a Vic team would have won 4 finals to win a flag mate, back then they would have had a top 5 or 6, not a top 8... backed it up the next year by becoming the first team to travel for all 4 weeks of the finals and win a flag (after getting thumped in the first game and luckily 7th and 8th lost too)

essendon were very lucky in 1993 as was pointed out earlier.

btw sensational pictures there dyertribe!!
