We have to win a flag this year or next year. Gold Coast will be too strong after next year and the year after GWS.

I'm not panicking after the loss this weekend because we could not play much worse, Gold Coast are a top 8 side at home, and a couple crucial umpiring calls went their way late in the game.

Round 2 will be a massive game for our club and one of the most important in Hardwicks tenure. Do we have the talent to win the big one before the expansion teams dominate? Will we be able to take out a bogey team and prove we are no longer mentally weak? This game against Carlton is huge.

Cotchin, deledio, Martin, Ellis, conca, riewoldt, vickery, valastuin, rance.... This list is full of top end talent. Guys this match is so important in terms of our clubs history. A loss to me signals another failed rebuild and this club can't take another one. No more excuses. Contest by contest, play by play, let's get ruthless. It's time to flick the contender switch.

Even with their concessions and larger cap, it will be hard to keep a fair amount of their players once their egos and managers take over. Look for them to lose a couple stars a year and now that they are winning games their draft picks will start to decline... headed for mediocrity like the rest...

It's the other 16 clubs responsibility to try and get as many quality kids back down south as possible.... Its something I think we should have been proactive in. Our pick32 to could have snagged something pretty good IMO......

Hate to say it and I hope I'm wrong but I can't see us winning a flag in the next 2 - 3 years as sides like Freo are more advanced and GWS and Suns will not only overtake us but the rest of the comp not long after that.

Freo don't really have that much time to win a flag. Sandilands, Pavlich, McPharlin, Crowley and Duffield will all be gone in the next 2-3 years, and they really struggle for depth in those positions. They have this year, maybe next and that is it.

I think there is too much concern about Gold Coast and GWS being unmatchable power houses for the next 8 years. As has been pointed out in an earlier thread, as the players develop so will their expectation for a bigger pay cheque. The salary cap will make it hard for both of these teams to sustain all of their players going forward. Also if you look at the modern era very few clubs have been able to go back to back and have a sustained dynasty. Brisbane did it. Geelong had a dynasty of sorts but other team still snagged some GF cups around them.
I hope that Gold Coast and GWS are up there challenging over the next few years. It will be great for the game, however, I don't think they are guaranteed to take over the competition.
Tigers very little chance of premiership this year unless it is pinched - too many stronger teams above us
Next year more realistic but no certainty either.......

There was an interesting stat on Talking Footy tonight which showed how many first round picks premiership sides had eg. Hawks - 13 , Cats - 13 etc. GWS current first round picks - 22.

Scarey.

No need to worry, we will win a flag in the next 1-4 years as a goodbye present to lids for being loyal and sticking with us through the ups and downs. Forget about Gold coast and GWS. We have McDonough, Lennon, Vlastuin who will all play a vital role in our flags over the next three years. We Will free up money with the retirements of Newman, Foly, King. Which will then help us to raid Dion Presta or David swallow from the suns. Which will help us go back to back next year.......... ;):p:D:eek:

It did I feel.

Need to get Dusty's manager... what's his face, Ralph Carr to take over managing all of the GWS and GC players.
He will have them wandering around the ME Bank centre checking us out in fluoro construction vests in no time.

Playing back to back finals, is farther back in the mists of time than playing in GFs is for us, so I feel we need to walk before we can run so to speak.

Our next step is to consolidate inside the 8 and then become a top 4 team, then we can win the biggy.

How we react and play against "those whom shant be named" next Thursday will let us know if we are on the right track and Saturday was just a bump in the road or a sign of things to come.

Some posters woweee

If we get more talent within salary cap we can win flag.
Expansion teams already have talent within salary cap and wont possibly start winning flags coz for some reason all their players will leave....

Yup whatever floats your boats boys!

Heres the blatantly obvious truth:
If they start losing players it will be because they have a surplus of talent to fit in the salary cap, which means they can shed this excess and remain at the top.

The problem here is these bolded guys arnt yet 'top end talent'.
I put Rance in as he struggles against strong marking forwards to which we always match him up.

I wouldn't mind a few years of seeing the tiges play some good, consistent footy, finals worthy footy. Then worry about winning the big one.

A lot of their talent are on minimum rookie wage. Won't stay that way. For GC it will help when Ablett retires but as we saw he is that main reason they win in the first place.

That's not even taking into account the players they picked up as zone selections, 17 year olds etc. A lot of whom would have been 1st rounders.

Both GWS and GC have priority picks this year. So both will likey have another top 10 pick and a top 20 pick before their 2 round pick. Likely that both teams will have 3 picks each in the first 25 or so.

Still think both GWS and GC won't be top 4 until 2017, at which point the other 16 teams will just be making up the numbers.

The biggest mistake with both sides was not forcing them to trade some of their early picks. The AFL thought they would, they were wrong.

Window is all wrong IMO.

I laid Swans in the run v GWS on the weekend for a nice collect.

I think GWS can win the premiership in 2015!

Talk of getting a premiership before GWS surge is madness now IMO. GWS surge is this year and next!

We need to be competing against GWS into the future and when they get weaker like the Swans then attack.

To help this and us positionally we need to chase Jaksch this year and build our future ability to rise through drafting high quality talent.

As seen on the weekend, we have missed the boat getting in before GWS IMO. Bookmark it if you like.

When some teams caps get reduced and players get closer to free agency thats a time to target other teams younger guns. By that time, with Cotch, Vlas etc. we will have the base to explode!

Don't worry the earth is not scorched like St Kilda at RFC and , because of our youth, we are not in no mans land like CFC either!:thumbsu:

Hope Adelaide have a shit season and throw the kitchen sink at Dangerfield ...... Imagine Dangerfield, Cotchin, Martin & Deledio as our midfield???? Then Ellis & Conca can develop the way they should be allowed.

Dangerfield isn't available till next year isn't he? They way they talk him up in the media he would be expensive these days!
