Waaayyyyy too expensive

I am not excluding the Dangerfield option next year totally. We would have to trade a player or 2 to GWS beforehand to get him , with cap space and restructure the list. Unless you are GWS you can't argue 2016-2018 premiership for Dangerfield realistically. We should be very strong but they are looking like 2007 Geelong in that period

Dangerfield wouldn't be a bad option suitability wise for RFC. He would be the answer to our ruck rover issues at times, would gel with Cotch synergy wise and can help our FF options with JR deep near the square to.

Honestly, IMO I think if things project as I anticipate now I would be looking at Jaksch end of this year, feed our team with great youth potential, re-balance our team over the next few years with quality youth and the story you could sell to get Dangerfield would be, unlike any other club in the AFL except GCS probably is , we are ahead of Bulldogs and Mebourne and we can beat GWS and GCS when their caps drop and they have to unload with a dip in their cap and as such a contender we can attract these guys. But we know GWS will be strong , top 4 for a long time after this year IMO

End of 2015 is great for Dangerfield in terms of windows because as GWS and GCS surges the true windows of many clubs will be far more transparent by the end of 2015 when Danger is on the market! According to Danger in the article, not money but success prospects, is a large determinant for him so to get Danger or others we need to boost our potential with youth. Ladder position means little when GWS makes the jumps I forsee. The key is potential to win forward when Danger is playing to get him like with other prospects!

The other thing is when Danger finishes, Cotch will be around the same mark which suits a RFC rebuild or quick RFC re-shuffle via free-agency/trades to compete with GWS and GCS into the future depending on how our Vlastuin generation is going.

No to danger field , if he was at richmond he'd be crueled for being easily tagged out of the game . We just need to get players like Astbury , Griffith , Conca and Vlaustin to develop abd become consistent ,return players to their true positions and then let loose .
The role players like Ablett and Ward are having on and load bearing for the younger GC and GWS players shouldn't be underestimated . Let's see how some of their midfielders go when they become the first ones tagged .

It would actually be really good to play GWS/Gold Coast in the GF and beat them. Beat GC in 2015, beat GWS in 2016. :)

I for one can actually see teams like GWS and Gold Coast becoming cohesive on the basis that they can probably see massive improvement from year to year and know that if they all take pay-cuts they can push for a flag (or three) in their early-to-mid 20's and then use FA later in their careers to make the big bucks.

I agree with the OP. We have two years to win a flag because after that there is going to be a period of GWS & Gold Coast domination.

I can't see the best dozen of either GWS or Gold Coast going anywhere. As others have stated we need to be targeting guys likes Jaksh, Corr, etc who are in the 18-25 group who aren't getting game week in and week out. Of course this will also be everyone elses tatic

I actually couldn't see GWS vs Gold Coast sell out a Grand Final in Melbourne within the next 5 years. Combined there membership numbers are have less then 25,000 members. There would need to be 50,000+ neutral supports just to fill out the G. Compared to most years where there would probably only be 5 or 6k.

Interesting the line of thought Gibbs was making regarding list strategy as well as Dangerfield's focus on success as a key issue. IMO I believe Gibbs is leaving and Carlton with tough draw in 2014 will be maxmising the compo they get from him, probably first round!

Hypothetically, if RFC get Jaksch this year, and Trade for Boyd if they can as he has only in the system for 2014, front load our youngsters, how many free agents will want to come to RFC in future years given list projections and potential GWS dominance in the short term?

Clearly, if your list has not got a future regarding the quality of your youth teams will not be able to attract many players of quality to come to their clubs!!

Given GWS and GWS abnormalities, abnormal list practices seem appropriate in the short term to consolidate our strength in youth and build on RFC's impressive future credentials! If we have quality players that have a better chance to win a premiership in their career window at GWS and want to capitalize on life's opportunities I think we should accommodate them so long term in the future it works in our favour so over the long term RFC future is sustained and propelled into a period of great success for our developing young stars!

IMO the window is when the cap reduces in GWS for RFC.

We are not ready this year, and given age/development factors GWS could easily win in 2015 after the GWS Swans match. I doubt RFC can beat GWS in 2015. In 2016-2018 we definitely will not I think. But after that with more youth of quality, like G Ablett JNR a few of their stars and stars of other teams( do not forget),like a Macrae or Tyson will want a change! With premierships already won at GWS after their initial dominance, other matters will make a change desirable for some and poltically the comp,AFL HQ, will get sick of them winning all the time! Most of the time is okay but all of the time is counter productive!

RFC above all must be active, it can't float into no mans land like a North or CFC with poorly advised raised aspirations regarding timing with respect to ones opponents!

IMO I just want to beat carlton

Notice Malthouse said (I think) forget about premiership for Carlton this year or words to that effect.

Not sure if CFC cares more about compo for Gibbs and is that interested in 2014 performance!

I think Jon Ralph said Gibbs would command less than Daisy!

I don't think at this time Gibbs suits RFC at the moment but boy some underrate him IMO!

If Carlton hands the victory to RFC I will just laugh, what a sorry club!:D

I'm feeling much less optimistic about our list at the moment, we just have too many average players still, our off-season was quite disappointing, we didn't manage to bring much quality in, it's a shame we haven't got Tyson or Adams in the last 2 years.

Vlastuin, Ellis, Conca and Lennon need to become guns, I think Vlastuin definitely will, Ellis probably will, Lennon I have no idea and Conca I'm doubting. We haven't been able to add much depth with the later round draft picks in the last few years.

Then we also need a better backline, Chaplin, Rance, Astbury, Newman...etc is lightyears away from what is required if you have a look at Geelong & Hawthorn backlines.

I disagree that it's a forgone conclusion that GWS and the GC are going to win the next 5 flags as everyone seems to think is guaranteed in a couple of years.

You need a hell of a lot to go your way to win a flag. It's not just about onfield talent. Off field stability, quality coaches, a favourable draw, a good injury run, playing your opponents at the right time, on field leadership, luck with umpires, weather conditions, individual match ups, etc.

There are way too many variables that effect both individual matches (eg. finals and grand finals) and seasons as a whole. Talent is only one of these contributing factors. If we stick to our plan and build a list capable of challenging, we have a chance, as do a lot of clubs.

If Vlas and co become guns, we will be dead set the team to beat. If we get a gun and 3 a-graders, i'd be stoked.

Our defense worked well last year, so while we changed a bit this year, theres nothing that tells me that we are in big trouble.

The only time we'll see Newy down back is if we see his forward experiment fail, and we need to give him the respect to let him see thru the year in the no 1's.

I think North Melbourne, while RFC clearly have more talent, is an example of slow and steady with a top-up player here and there is not going to cut it if we are serious about positioning ourselves in a place where we have the ability to reap real premiership awards against the toughest opposition down the track for the club and the players. North look more than ever to be like the Bulldogs, close but no realistic cigar, Getting Dal Santo clearly seems to represent an overestimation of their list at a given point in time and now they are looking like CFC in no mans land!

I think strategies like those at Collingwood and Saints need to be seriously considered and Heath Shaw must think he is a genius winning the lottery. The best thing about RFC is after adopting such strategies any initial pain wouldn't be within cooee of what the Saints will have to experience, who left their run to late and didn't respect the importance of an appropriate list strategy given where oppositions where at. Any dip from such a re-shuffle strategy at RFC towards youth, would be like Collingwood, where they were going to lose to Freo anyway but they will still be a mover and a shaker IMO with just a longer time frame going forward!

Talk of getting a premiership before GWS surge is madness now IMO. GWS surge is this year and next!

We need to be competing against GWS into the future and when they get weaker like the Swans then attack.
Mr.Magic; presenting the 10 year plan.

Let's just focus on the game next week, alright? ;)

Yeap but in future years I am sure the players, supporters want a premiership and are working towards that as our main goal. Lets not f... it up like North and CFC!!!;)

At least Saints are going hardcore, getting behind the kids , focusing on development because, when it wasn't working with Watters, they obviously didn't believe, unlike Port drunk on healthy youth not peptides with plenty of belief. The Saints obviously believed focusing just on the game, matches, going through the motions was not going to get it done! So the Saints admirably made a clear, certain, assertive move, probably because they new, after missing out so close, the Lyons way, by itself, and high draft picks, by itself was not going to get it done. Obviously Saints regime want a premiership and Dunstan is a team development triumph for their future and with victory over Melbourne in the now reinforcing the gutsy, strong, heartening move by the club to go hard youth and development despite their deteriorating list short term !!!;)

Like Port, the Saints are winning with youth and with the amount of depth RFC have now with rookies and what not, RFC must recruit with youth like them to take the necessary step forward and fuel our players aspirations now. Only then our leaders like Cotch know the club is really behind them striving for a premiership along side them and our supporters making sure we are given every chance to win the ultimate prize and empower us to strive forward to develop with great gusto!:thumbsu:

What Saints, Port and GWS will show, like the Baby Bombers, like Brisbane v powerhouse Essendon 2001, it is not about ladder position or past deeds that determines success. It is about how well the club, players and supporters develops and grows as a unit that determines how well it performs at the highest level. When we strive for victory against the blues on the weekend, a lot of it s about how we have developed and grown as a team beforehand!

Lets ensure when the players strive to win and develop on the weekend they feel it is for a greater purpose with greater meaning!;) Lets ensure the players and supporters are given every chance to believe, through their actions, they can actually get close to touching the holy grail eventually from our, and their own development, alright!;)

So lets not focus on beating Carlton on the weekend!!! Lets focus on developing towards empowering a team to win a premiership!! If we beat Carlton on the weekend on the way, on the journey, great lets enjoy it, celebrate it even, and draw confidence from what we are doing along the way towards building RFC into the premiership powerhouse we know it should be and strives for along with our players and supporters!!:)

See Tyson running around for Malb? There's our future. Go get him!!!

Just glad we didn't get T Adams! Tyson is a mile ahead him as well!:thumbsu:
Fairly certain we missed the boat on Tyson.

Nah, I am not wiling to concede. Even if it means waiting 10 years for free agency or trading good players if suitable down the track. He has Richmond links, he belongs at RFC, and he will be a good player for us!:thumbsu:

tbh I am getting sick of missing out on a lot of development boats! Is anyone in the inner circle trying to buy a ticket?
