Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

The fact that unless you are talking Luke Bruest or Cyril Rioli types they are useless in Grand Finals would be the biggest reason!
All Swans players were useless in the Grand Final unless you're talking Kennedy, Goodes or Franklin types.

Anyway, almost every premiership side has a key performance from a small forward. The ones on the losing team often play poorly which is unsurprising.

2007 - didn't bother as everyone dominated for Geelong
Williams kicked 3.2 in Hawthorn's 2008 win, Rioli also impacted
Johnson kicked 4.2 in Geelong's 2011 win (or Bartel kicked 3 from lots of time forward, Varcoe kicked 3 etc).
Morton had crucial impact and 2 goals in Sydney's 2012 win.
Rioli was one of the best in Hawthorn's 2013 win.
Breust kicked 3 goals in Hawthorn's 2014 win.

Also, small-medium forwards have outscored big forwards in recent Grand Finals. Not wanting facts to get in the way or anything. http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/good-things-come-in-small-forward-packages-20140714-zt6yg.html

All the ones that you have listed are lead smalls, with SJ basically a midfielder, and if Morton is a small forward I'm the Pope. Ideally we get a Bruest type (and we don't let them go this time). I wouldn't be going all out for a crumbing small forward that everyone seems to wanThey are ones that do nothing, look at Milne's performance and he was the 'best' of them. We need a leader small, it is why I was for get ting Lonie in the draft last year as he plays both roles. That said our picks look damn good.

Whilst we all would love Reid to take 10 marks and kick 4 goals per game, the value that Reid brings is often underestimated in my opinion. He brings the ball to advantageous spots, creates match up headaches for opposition coaches and is vital to our overall structure.

He's certainly no dud.

I loved what I saw from Brandon Jack the other night.

I loved what I saw from Brandon Jack the other night.

I'm on the fence with Jack. To me he is more the crumbing type. Now whilst he'll look good against the bottom 8 sides, history says he won't against top sides. That is sort of my issue. My view is McGlynn should play that role as he is good enough to play the lead role too.

The club owes it to reid to give him consistant time to develop in a role. Lets remember he was our key forward when we won the flag. He saw tippett and then buddy come in,he knew his role would diminish/change and did not complain.

He is very much a confidence player and it doesnt help when he gets shifted around every game,he could see that as a sign the club has no confidence in him.

I know he hasnt perforemed to expectation but guve him a chance and let him cement his role and not throw the baby out with the bath water whenever he gets beat.

He took a huge mark against freo to save the game a couple of years ago. Lets give the boy a chance

Brandon jack is a tricky one. He looks extremely good sometimes and other times he goes missing. The massive positive with him is his tackling ability. Hes proven he is more than capable of applying very good defensive pressure.

For me, when his is in the senior team,he should have very specific kpi's. First he should be told not to venture past half forward. Just roam the forward line. 2nd i would say, i dont care how many times you touch the pill as lond as u tackles and apply pressure. You will not be picked next week if you dont score 5 tackles INSIDE 50!!. The goals will come after that.

We have goal kickers in tippett, buddy, goodes and mglynn. What we dont have is a forward 50 defensive machine. I would be telling him to chase, chase, chase. Show him videos of dogs in a park going ballistic chasing birds and mimic it. If it moves , you chase and you bark.

In the gf debacle, the hawks killed us coming out of defence. They pretty much walked it out because they knew there was no risk to being tackles. Jack cant get to every contest but if he develops a reputation of being a ferocious forward line defender,it will create percieved pressure and opposition will panic.

Eventually you want opposition to fear having possession of the ball in our 50 because there is always someone nipping at their ankles.

There is no reason why b jack cannot perform this role very well. Someone just needs to lay out the blue print

Well said, won't add too much more. Small forwards should tackle, tackle and tackle. Goals are secondary
Especially when you have the potency of our forward line. There is no good having a small forward who sees themself as a goal scorer, he simply wont get the opportunities.

B jack is the perfect candidate for this role. Besides the fact he is a good tackler and extremely quick, he has been in the system long enough now and will surely want to cement his role no matter what it is. A couple of seasons as a specialist small forward defender ( if that makes sense) and he can get some mid minutes. But first he needs to play a team first role earn his stripes. If played in this role i could see him cemented in the best 22 by the end of the year.

Just not sure horse has the same idea i have about b jack

We should encourage opposition selection committees to try and match up on Buddy, Tippett, Goodes and Reid.

Then I'd start Goodes in the green vest, Tippett at the opening bounce and Reid at CHB.

I honestly believe that all 4 of those players won't ever play any more than 10 games together in the same team, mainly because one or more of them will be injured or rested at some point in future games.

The season hasn't started yet & we have Tippett & Reid already injured, Buddy being managed & the one most unlikely, that looks the fittest & least vulnerable to injury (for now), being our 54 year old AOTY legend who has had stem cell treatment to give him rejuvenated knees.

Meh!
What happens, happens!

On a more positive note though, I'm really going to make an effort to watch Goodesy really closely this year as though each game will be his last. I will make a concerted effort to watch the stars of the game playing for our team & appreciate the good that they do & have done for us. I'm tired of analyzing games too much because you miss the magic things that happen.
We have Buddy, Goodes & Jetta that have exceptional skills yet we put too much emphasis on what they do when we haven't got the ball. After watching the GF a number of times, it was the skillful players of Hawthorn that tore us a new one. Half their team aren't accountable for their opponents. They just hit their targets. Their skillful players dictated the terms of how the game was going to be played. As defensive as we'd like to think we are, that all went out the window that day so if we just let the players with flair show off their skills, then we can devastate the opposition in games.

At this stage looking to like a lemon but certainly not writing him off, seems a little bit of same same from Reid as each year goes on. Bit of injury and a bit of game time which doesn't overly inspire.
I hope to Christ he comes good, doggies offered big for a trade not this trade period but one gone.....

Could the Doggies have offered Griffen as part of a trade offer for Reid this trade period before they ended up with Boyd? Our trading ban would have put a stop to it, but imagine the outcry from Eddie!

Not sure as the unrest with Griffin wasnt apparent at that stage.

As a backman. Ted will retire within a year or two, could be a good replacement for him.
Needs more time down there on a player before then, though

He is gonna need a pay cut next contract though unless he picks up all of a sudden
Not sure what he got last time round, but yeah he's by no means as good as we (and the club) thought he was. He's a bit like Shaun Higgins, showed plenty of early promise but tapered off. Who knows, maybe he'll come out this year and make fools of us all. I'd be rapt if he did.

If he plays as a Swingman and does well in defence and kicks a bit more than a goal a game, plays as a pure backman and does well or plays as a forward and kicks 35+ I'll be happy as.

Just had a thought: If he is fit, Tippett isn't, why don't we use Reid as the deep forward? Great pair of hands. One of the Jacks at his feet.
