Reading a post comparing Lloyd and Lucas and how good it was to have them both made me think about coming into 2000. If I recall, our forward line was supposed to be our main weapon, combined with a very talented back line and reasonable centre. What followed was the forwards were unstoppable, the backs brilliant and the centre stepped up to the mark. But, also we had so much depth it was frightening.
Then over next couple of years it was dismantled.
Looking at the team now (and I'm NOT saying it's 2000), but the comparisons for the future are interesting. A forward line built around Lucas/Lloyd and Courtney Johns with the crumbing & speed of Lovett, Monfries, Jetta, Davies and .... Hird just being Hird!
A back line anchored by Fletcher, Michael and McPhee with Johnson, McVeigh, Lovett-Murray.
A centre line of Hille, Johnson, Peverill, Watson, Laycock, Ryder, Stanton, Winderlich etc etc etc.
And Hird - well....., Hird!
And DEPTH! Gumbleton, Neagle, Heffernan, Dyson, Who'll get sick of not getting a game? Apart from the MAIN anchors, we could cover most injuries for a fair while.
I think the future's very exciting (but then I say that every year!!). What do others think of the comparison?
