Let’s have a look at the Cats line up, see what secret weapons they’ve been hiding.

Gary Ablett - Has talent & flair, needs to learn to impose himself on the game
James Bartel - Plenty to work with here, serious long term player
Tim Callan - New kid, yet to see him play
Paul Chambers - A bit short for an AFL ruckman, a key position is on the cards
Paul Chapman - A terrier, good in & under, question mark on pace though
David Clarke - Smooth mover, in a way reminds me of Carlton’s Campo
Joel Corey - Determined bloke, like his classy runs from half back
Corey Enright - Not convinced he’s a genuine midfielder, good versatility though
Ben Finnin - New kid, very very raw, played reserves for Port Magpies
Daniel Foster - Needs to do more to stay ahead of other kids
Charlie Gardiner - Haven’t liked what I’ve seen so far, solid build
Ben Graham - Along with Peter Everitt, league’s biggest underachiever
Brent Grgic - Amazed he’s still on a league list, Hack
Tom Harley - Does most things well, future club leader, big guys cause him some problems
Josh Hunt - Big kick, but looks like a passenger too many times
David Johnson - Haven’t seen enough of him yet, good bloodline
Steve Johnson - Good half forward type, a bit of Peter Vardy about him
James Kelly - Pure midfielder, probably best Cat junior
Steven King - One of the elite AFL ruckmen
Kent Kingsley - Huge surprise packet, has to back it up to really confirm status
Cameron Ling - Would be best as an old styled centreman, fine player
Tom Lonergan - New kid, yet to see him play
Aaron Lord - Wasted spot on list, Hack
Andrew Mackie - New kid, yet to see him play
Matt McCarthy - Old new kid, yet to see him play
Darren Milburn - Has talent, but wastes it, likes the odd impact
Brent Moloney - New kid, yet to see him play
Cameron Mooney - Could be a good CHF if head gets right, does some silly things
Henry Playfair - Old new kid, yet to see him play
James Rahilly - I’m not convinced, better midfield options are available
Peter Riccardi - Hasn’t slowed up yet, better at half forward now IMO
Jarad Rooke - Has good height as a spare part defender, honest player
Brenton Sanderson - When fit plays “sweeper” role as good as anyone
Matthew Scarlett - Fine full back, monsters can worry him, (get a haircut son)
David Spriggs - Cats will welcome his return, rover in the mould of Mark Naley
Peter Street - Time to make a big splash with all that height, make or break year
Mitchell White - Time has passed by, not yet a hack though
David Wojcinski - Good pacey small defender, has found his niche
Marc Woolnough - Seems to have overcome bad luck, needs a full season

The Cats were the club I stuffed up the most last season, oh well, crap happens, I’m not yet convinced by the Cats that they are finals material in 2003, but they’ll be knocking at the door.

I’ll finish all the clubs before I make my predictions.

Not a bad analysis.

Agree with all bar these:

If Paul Chambers makes it, it will be as a ruckman. His skills and hands are pathetic. Isn't, and never will be a KPP.

Clarke is a hack imho. The only comparison i can make between him and Campo is that they both are outside midfielders. For me, that is where the similarities end.

Josh Hunt is anything but a passenger. The kid is one of the hardest workers in the team, always willing to do the one percenters. Not sure where your "passenger" line came from.

Nice summary though.

A little bit harsh on Dasher in my opinion. I would like to see him push up into the midfield more to have a bigger impact in games, but he plays the half back role quite well and has the ability to play 'tall' as well as 'small' in our defence.

a) It's hard to impose himself from the bench. Great hands just needs the confidence (selfishness) to kick the thing. I prescribe a weeks training with Aaron Lord, that should sort him out :p

b) Looked alright. Like Ablett spent a lot of his time on the bench for the seniors. HFF or Midfielder?

c) Nobody is convinced but improved towards the end of the season to save himself from the chop.

I agree with most of what you've said except for:

Paul Chambers - Third string ruckman, and a pretty poor one at that.
Charlie Gardiner - 100% competence, 0% flair.
Aaron Lord - Bulky goalsneak who will get more opportunities now that Burns is at W@nkerlaide
Mitchell White - Has spent most of the past two years on the injury list, but showed enough in his return matches against Hawthorn and the VFL finals to suggest he will be a valuable player.

I know one...They both jump at there own shadows

Hey people,
I have heard a little rumour that Cameron Mooney has built up even more over the pre season and has been putting in the hard yards....just wondering if anybody has any info on whether or not this is true?
From a North Melbourne supporters point of view, i hope that he kicks off again after playing some good footy last year because once he started concentrating on the ball and not the man, he was unstoppable at times.
Just needs to be a little more consistent, but that will come naturally because after all he only around 22 or 23 isnt he?
Cheers.
Skarks.

I don't think Lord's done yet, just prop him up in a pocket for 2 more yrs

Big Streety- time to step up

Gary Jr-The rough edges should smooth out a bit this year, shouldn't run into as much bother this year when he wins the close in ball as he did last year.

Benny-Pick 1 end of the ground and stick with it

Kingsley-Isn't sneaking up on everyone this year, another 50 odd majors means he's done his job

Although it would be great to see Benny send through a few 9-pointers, I'm sure he will play down back. There are plenty of players in out line up capeable of kicking 50+, and let Benny get his form in these lead up games, down back.

A couple of random thoughts here (mostly culled from my memory banks while watching the good deal of Geelong match replays on Fox Footy this week):

This will be his year, I think. He's had his taste of senior footy, and combined with his fine-tuning in the VFL, he could have an impact this season.

James Bartel - Plenty to work with here, serious long term player

Very impressive... ready to take the next step, along with much of the team's "kiddie corps".

Joel Corey - Determined bloke, like his classy runs from half back

Might be a very well-kept secret around the league. Ready for a breakout season this year, methinks...

Ben Graham - Along with Peter Everitt, league’s biggest underachiever

That would be saying a lot.

However, now that Steven King has the captaincy at Geelong, maybe the weight has been lifted from Graham's shoulders where he can focus 100% on playing and contributing, rather than worrying about combining that with a leadership role.

Steve Johnson - Good half forward type, a bit of Peter Vardy about him

Very impressed with his progress last season.

Still continuing to develop... just might provide the depth we need in the overall forward ranks. Had a good season in spots last year, and he can hopefully build upon that.

James Kelly - Pure midfielder, probably best Cat junior

An All-Australian in the making.

Steven King - One of the elite AFL ruckmen

Can't argue with that assessment-- however, I'd say that King's the best ruckman in the league.

Kent Kingsley - Huge surprise packet, has to back it up to really confirm status

Very much agreed.

But as went Kingsley last year, so went the Cats. He all but disappeared when the team went on a cold spell late in the season, the opposition seemed to key in on him as the goal-kicking threat.

With more help from the other forwards to free up space and opportunities for Kingsley, maybe he can duplicate his 2002 season numbers.

Cameron Ling - Would be best as an old styled centreman, fine player

The heart of the Cats midfield, between him and Peter Riccardi. Has some wonderful defensive skills as well (just ask Nathan Buckley).

Aaron Lord - Wasted spot on list, Hack

Not sold on that assessment-- maybe now with Ronnie Burns gone, Lord can fill the small forward/"goal-sneak" role. Give Lord one more season to make it or break it...

Peter Riccardi - Hasn’t slowed up yet, better at half forward now IMO

True, but does well when rotating between half-forward and the midfield.

Always a decent goal-kicking threat coming forward.

Brenton Sanderson - When fit plays “sweeper” role as good as anyone
Matthew Scarlett - Fine full back, monsters can worry him, (get a haircut son)

These players are the heart of the back line-- and Scarlett was a revelation last season.

Peter Street - Time to make a big splash with all that height, make or break year

Agreed. You can't teach height, as it's been said, but hopefully his skills will have shown an improvement this season.

With all this having been said, very optimistic about Mark Thompson's progress in shaping the side. They'll learn well from last season's late-campaign disappointments, and will definitely be playing in September.

Top-six, for sure-- and with some good breaks, could be having the double-chance when the finals roll around.

Cheers,
William

I'm back to irritate

Yes, I really did bomb out badly on the Cats last season, crap happens, but I'm not yet won over by them.

This is tight, but my guess is they'll just miss out

The Cats to finish 9th

I hope for our sake you are wrong Asgardian, as finishing 9th again this season will be considered a a step backwards for our club.

We should be aiming at a top 4 finish.
