maybe im biased but i would have thought thomas and campbell have been far better than jetta and were taken much later

What are you expecting from Gumbleton this year if he is injury free?

and speaking of that, has the essendon medical staff got his body right for 2009?

Playing a lead up forward role to utilize his excellent endurance. His lack of body strength will hold him back for awhile so he'll be unable to take one of the best defenders, IMO.

His body has been fine, he's been one of the best training this pre-season (training the house down if you will). Has added some strength but certainly isn't built like a brick shithouse.

I'd take them over Jetta but I was more referring to people in his draft range and prior to our next pick.

If the 2006 draft was to be redone again, who would the top 10 picks picks be in order?

i am not going to put a poll in, because i want it to be a more open discussion rather than choosing from a limited selection.

but for the sake of having a poll because it is the polls board, i will include a question to vote for or against.

Yeah, he'd go one.

He's still only 19 and has played ever game largely learning defensive techniques.
This kid is an absolute animal and will be one of the best and most respected players in the competition sooner than later.
Look no further than last night

Gibbs is showing why he was pick 1 tonight. I'd personally take him over Selwood.

Of course you would.
He reminds you of your champion Buckley.

I was quoting similarities in he and Buckley last year and was laughed at, then we have the commentators quoting as such last night.

His body even looks to be that of Buckleys.
Must be a S.A. thing.

Just quietly, I know I've mentioned him a couple of times already but Grigg is also on his way to being a very very good player for us.

Perhaps someone not very well known by the opposition supporters but very highly rated by us Carlton supporters.

Frawley? Hampson? Everitt? Jetta? Luenbeger? Clarke has out performed every single one of them so far. I'd love to hear justification of those players. I can accept Luenberger since he showed very promising signs pre injury, but the rest is laughable.

Christ dude, watch Collingwood. Clarke is an important part of the Collingwood side already and has arguably the best kick out of our side, intelligent, and easily our best endurance athlete.

He isn't top 10, but he'd be top 20.
Would Carlton pick Clarke ahead of Grigg if the 2006 draft was held again with Clarke in it?

I wouldn't.

I wasn't sold on Grigg at the start like Gibbs, but he has improved out of sight in the last 12 months and hardened up with his attack on the contest. A terrific young leader and modern footy player with his accountability, size, pace, run and long kicking.

I'd have him ahead of Clarke.

It's harder to switch over to Aussie Rules from Hurling and learn the finer arts of playing as a defender like Setanta. Like Clarke, Armfield switched from another ball sport in Rugby Union to AFL and doesn't look out of place as a running backman.

Hampson isn't a born footballer and a natural ruckman like Jacobs, but his hand eye co-ordination, pace, athleticism and agility is impressive for a man his size.

Huge upside after he switched from soccer to AFL a couple of years ago.

Quickest player on Carlton's list with the speed and leap to get off most defenders if he can develop into a resting ruckman.

Hampson ran down Rodan, but forgot to tackle Cassissi when he ran him down on a wing. :o :D

Didnt see much of the Carlton game, how did Gibbs perform? how many touches did he get plus details of performance etc.

Selwood has gotten bigger this season, can tell he has really worked hard in the gym over the summer.

now instead of a solid teenage boy throwing himself under packs, we will see a 20 year old muscle ball diving in, which will mean alot more success with the in and unders that he was already so good at in only his second year.

After Ablett, he was the most heavily tagged against Adelaide, i will expect him to be recieving heavy attention all year.

Very very pleased with the look of Selwood, am expecting him to take his Football to another new level this season, his body is definately ready to take him to the next level, very impressed.

Both Selwood and Gibbs seem to have strikingly similar resemblances to past champion players of the last decade.

Selwood= the new Michael Voss
Gibbs= the new Nathan Buckley

He had 27 disposals & was named as our second best player behind Fev, who kicked 6 goals. Played the match in the midfield, as he will for the majority of this season & although it was only a NAB Cup game, showed enough to suggest that the development displayed in the second half of the 2008 season is continuing into 2009.

Clarke has had better performances to date than Grigg has.

Why did you even quote me when saying this? You bolded a bit about me saying he'd definitely be a top 20 pick from this draft, then replied with nothing relevant to what you bolded.

Hampson wouldn't be a top 20 pick either, Renouf would be chosen ahead of him. Grigg would probably get inside the top 20 though, since he is a good prospect, although he did make some poor mistakes against North Melbourne.

He looked pretty good the other night but I don't listen to any Carlton supporters opinion on him since I heard one of them say he is already better than Deledio.

Jesus, who said that?

A good team isn't all about having the best 20 players in the comp.

It is about having a cohesive unit that work together. What happens in that scenario is it makes everyone look a better player then they may be individually.

I've seen many teams drop off after the loss of just a couple of players in one year and it is funny then that some of the players you were touting at being of champion status just don't look quite as good any more.

For an example look no further than West Coast recently.

Grigg, Urquhart, Tippett and Morton all are far better and all have far more upside than Jetta and were taken after him in round 2 of that draft

James Sellar - 5: Disappointing last year playing in the Glenelg reserves but I will give him some time. IMO, he should be played in defence/ruck.
Kurt Tippett - 8: Has adapted into the game really well (he played basketball). Very good contested mark. forward and backup ruck.
David Mackay 8 -: Is looking like he will be elite. Very smooth and skilled with excellent vision.
Nick Gill - 5: Picked him up after Melbourne delisted him and hasn't done that well up forward. Just can't kick. IMO, should be played on the wing ala Richo due to his engine and athleticism.
Bryce Campbell - 1: Gone.

Well then they're idiots. Grigg has been a great pick up however. Absolute hard nut and his game has improved 100 fold each season he's been with us. I expect him to make a really big impact for us in 2009.

lets just say im not that shattered that jetta was gone and we had to take urquhart haha

the 2006 draft was a crop rated highly for its breed and depth of tallented young Key position players.

12 of the 17 players picked in the first round where KP players.

it is now the third year these draftees have been in the system, i have been following the progress of 3 of the talls more closely than others, tom hawkins because i am a geelong supporter, lachlan hansen and gumbleton because i always had rated these 2 very highly.

has been very dissapointing the way gumbletons body has held up, but due to lack of senior football experience, i am not expecting much from him at all this year, 2010 is when i think Gumbleton will show the football world what he is made of.

Hansen i see as being just as good as any of the other talls from this draft, the way i see Hansen is that his body and frame is still quite underdone for a KPP he lacks an imposing prescence on the field and in contested situations, this is something i can see him accumulating as he more physically develops and tunes himself over the next few seasons, i can see him really peaking and starting to come good in his 5th season of AFL football, i see hansen as a longer term project than some of the others.

Hawkins has trimmed down plenty over the pre season, has now got perfect skin folds, is in the best physical shape he has ever been in.
Expecting 35+ goals from him this season.

are any of you beggining to worry about any of the highly anticipated talls your team drafted, mayby starting to question whether or not they will make it on the big stage?
