Lol

Rioli is a part time small forward, part time mid who's best is brilliant but goes missing and can be invisible the week after. I'd take all those he listed before him, as well as Henderson and McEvoy if I had to build a side. The rest of those guys are bonafide mids or KPPs or are much more consistent week to week.

He has only finished top 10 in Hawthorns best and fairest 4 out of his 6 years at the club, all while not having an injury free year since his debut in 2008.

Pretty good for a part time small forward who goes missing in games.

Minimum Top 10. Everyone says he is so overated that he has become underated

Has been better than Ebert, Mumford, Rance, Kruezer and Hanley at a minimum

It's about value though if I was drafting for a side. It's a hell of a lot harder to find rucks KPPs etc. He is not a midfielder, and as a small forward he's not an enormous goal kicker. He's talented and a good player no doubt, but his position isn't one of worth if you were drafting/recruiting. He'd have to be an absolute star in the small forward/part time mid role to justify top 10 IMO and he's not.

It says alot about theses supporters who are preaching they would rather build a team about unproven players who have done shit all for the last 5 years then a player who is one of the best players in the best team in the comp.

So many players mentioned above Rioli on some of these lists wouldn't be 2 time premiership players if they were drafted to hawthorn instead of Rioli.
With that being said how is it that this inconsistent small forward has two Premiership medals?

A good player is good, no matter which way you look at it.

And LOL at not an absolute star! he would be a top 5 player at Richmond.

I know he's a good player. When did I say he wasn't?

Right about the time you ranked him below Jack Steven and Brad Ebeat who haven't even had a half the career Rioli has had so far.

Re: re do the 2007 draft now that we know what we know

IMO your rankings are not the best, some are really dodgy, Grant who has shown nothing at AFL level over Cale Morton and Chris Masten??? Also I can't see Carlton changing there first pick. The first round in 2007 looks to be very good, drafting really has improved over the last few years.

1. Carlton: Matthew Kruezer - The best bigman in the draft, and has shown he has what it takes to become a very good ruckman, or a good CHF.

2. Richmond: Trent Cotchin - Has shown enough to suggest he has what it takes to become elite over time.

3. West Coast: Chris Masten - Looks to be a very good inside mid, only just over Rioli and Dangerfield though.

4. Melbourne: Patrick Dangerfield - Looks to have all the skills as a mid, has a lot of development left, and the Demons could use a pacy inside mid.

5. Bulldogs: Cale Morton - Looks to be a good winger/HBF with elite skills, has potential to become an excellent CHF IMO. Bulldogs could use a KPF but none are worth it an Morton may end up as a CHF.

6. Essendon: Cyril Rioli - Hyped up a lot on BF, yet still an excellent player, a very good HFF, who may spend time in the middle but for mine I have doubts still on him becoming a full time mid. The Bombers need a player like this.

7. Fremantle: Rhys Palmer - Was excellent last year, kicking needs a bit of work but not as bad as everyone makes out to be and it should improve, Freo still need him as a mid.

8. Brisbane Lions: Callan Ward - A very good inside mid, very similar to J. Selwood IMO, Brisbane need a clearance player with good skills.

9. Saint Kilda: Tayte Pears - They could use a KPD and he has been very good so far, potentially elite.

10. Adelaide: Brad Ebert - Has looked very good so far as mid/HFF, Adelaide may still go with a defender.

11. Sydney: Harry Taylor - Still very good, and sydney need a CHB

12. Hawthorn: Ben McEvoy - Hawks need a ruckman and he looks to be very good and can take a good mark.

13. West Coast: Patrick Vespremi - Looks like he will become a very good forward prospect, has nice skills to, WC need a crumber.

14. Melbourne: Jack Grimes - Can't see them changing maybe should go higher but has been injured and I rate others higher, still looks a great prospect though.

15. North Melbourne: Jarrad Grant - Slips because he has shown nothing, yet still developing and looks to possess elite athletic qualities.

16. Port Adelaide: Lachlan Henderson - Port get a KPD, who looks to be a good player, but slides cause he has gone to Carlton.

17. Geelong: Andy Otten - looks have good skills and can rebound as a HBF, may become a mid.

Look what has happened now.

You saw it a few years ago.

Cotchin
Dangerfield
Walker
Steven
Rioli
Hanley
Henderson
Masten
Mayne
Kreuzer
Ward
Selwood
Lobbe
Ebert
Rance
McEvoy
Grimes

Taylor, Thompson and Mumford would be there but I'm not sure on the criteria. Are we pretending it's 2007 or are we drafting for now?

It's funny how Masten has turned out to be a pretty solid pick in such a volatile (and crap) draft year.

Ebert was the dumb pick by us (putting Notte aside). Guy was always going back to Port from day dot.

McEvoy over Kreuzer for consistency if nothing else.

..seriously..?.. ..krooz has played more games [half a season more] and this is including the fact that he blew out his acl.. ..he was already playing good footy in his 1st season, 5th in the club B&F in just his 2nd season.. ..not that brownlow votes are an exact measurement but for a ruck not easy to get, has 4 BoG performances, all post acl comeback as well.. ..took your rucks to the cleaners this year and that was after breaking his thumb earlier in the season..

..krooz is the very definition of consistency, it's the number 1 tag that makes him so much more accountable to a higher set of standards.. ..although from memory mcevoy was a pick 9 wasn't he?, so he ought to have a decent set of standards to be judged by as well.. ..being rucks, i think they've both exceeded expectations, its just ppl these days expect so much from that position, a position that most would think the players are now just about to enter their prime [age/games]..

Gee it's a good draft for key backman. The 2013 full back and centre half back All Australian came from this draft - Taylor and Thompson. You also have Henderson, Hooker, Rance and Pears who have shown good form in the backline.

For me:

1. Patrick Dangerfield
2. Trent Cotchin
3. Taylor Walker
4. Lachie Henderson
5. Cyril Rioli
6. Callan Ward
7. Scott Selwood
8. Jack Steven
9. Cale Hooker
10. Matthew Kreuzer
11. Ben McEvoy
12. Chris Masten
13. Jack Grimes
14. Alex Rance
15. Brad Ebert
16. Chris Mayne
17. Andy Otten
18. Ben Whitecross
19. Craig Bird
20. David Myers

Brad Ebert seems a steal at 15 right now, but I'll leave it how it is.

For me I'd bump Steven up to 6 and Ward into 5.
Steven has got to be rated above Selwood (heck I'd even rate Masten ahead of Selwood).
Not sure why Grimes is ahead of Ebert either.

4-9 I chopped and changed a lot. I like Selwood a lot and think his leadership and ability to both lock down an opposition player as well as accumulate possessions makes him a great long-term contributor. Leadership is also the reason I have Grimes above Ebert. It's an underrated quality and Grimes gets fit, he's got all the tools to form a really solid career. But it's a tough draft after the top 3.

Would've thought Ebert's leadership is at least comparable to Grimes, even if he isn't the captain.
